Hi

With the first signs of spring arriving this week, it feels like the perfect moment to celebrate the artists and composers bringing fresh energy to Leeds. Today, on International Women's Day, we’re recognising the women whose creativity continues to shape our musical world.

We’re committed to making our stages as diverse as the city we serve, championing voices that have long enriched classical music yet haven’t always been centred within it. This spirit runs through the programmes featured in our current season, with music by composers such as Grażyna Bacewicz, Errollyn Wallen, Clara Schumann, and Britta Byström, to Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Florence Price, Cécile Chaminade, and Rachel Laurin.

This month, we’re especially looking forward to welcoming Khanh Nhi Luong performing Grażyna Bacewicz’s rarely heard second piano sonata in her beautifully crafted programme, and to spotlight Junyan Chen, Artistic Director of this year’s Leeds International Chamber Series, ahead of her duo performance at the end of the month.

We invite you to explore this month’s concerts and enjoy music shaped by the women who continue to inspire performers and audiences alike.

See you at a concert soon,
Leeds International Concert Season

Getting Active in Bradford District!

Bradford's Beryl Bikes

E-Bikes Bradford

A new e‑bike fleet is available for people age 16+ to hire in Bradford district!

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could leave your front door without needing to search for your car keys? Or without constantly refreshing the timetable to see where your bus, train or tram is? What if you could save a bit of cash and reduce toxic fumes and air pollution in the process? Perhaps you could even look forward to your commute?

Sounds good, right? Well, it is good. And it’s Beryl!

The scheme is funded via Bradford Clean Air Zone and offers clean, cheap and sustainable travel options. As the weather improves, it means easy, active travel between parts of the district.

The e-bikes can be hired in just a few simple steps:

  • Unlock – Download the Beryl app
  • Ride – Have fun and be safe
  • Park – In an LNER Beryl Bay or a considerate place in one of the designated zones.
  • Lock – Close the lock to end your ride.

Walk To Work Day: Friday 3 April

Walk to work

Walk to Work Day is the perfect reminder that moving more doesn’t have to mean joining a gym or running a marathon. Sometimes it’s as simple as stepping out the door a little earlier and enjoying the journey to work.

If you want to give it a go, start by setting your alarm just a bit earlier so you can walk at a relaxed pace rather than rushing. Comfortable shoes are a must, and you might be surprised by how much you notice when you slow down. Bradford district is full of hidden corners and historic pathways – from quiet side streets to hidden ginnels.

If a full walk to work isn’t possible, try a “walk part of the way” approach. You could park a little further away, get off the bus one stop earlier, or combine it with the school run by walking children to school before heading to work.

Check out the 20 Minute Movement A to Z to find more activities and places to visit in Bradford district!

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Ovarian Cancer Awareness

Currently there's no reliable screening test for ovarian cancer, meaning that symptom awareness is our best means of early detection. The key symptoms to look out for include persistent bloating, feeling full quickly, abdominal pain and needing to wee more often.

See your GP if you have any of these symptoms, or if you’ve already seen your GP but the symptoms are getting worse. Lots of these symptoms can be caused by different conditions but getting them checked is important.

It's also important to note that the smear test, (also known as the cervical screening test), is not used to detect ovarian cancer. This is a method of detecting abnormal cells in the cervix that could lead to cervical cancer and is a common misconception.

Let's Move: Rain or Shine

Mother and daughter playing in the park

How fit are your kids? Do they move energetically every day for an hour? Yes – brilliant, keep it up!

No? That’s understandable. Especially in the long, dark and colder months. Let’s break it down and make it realistic and achievable.

  • 4 x 15 minutes
  • 3 x 20 minutes
  • 2 x 30 minutes

Kids need this level of energy every day to help them stay fit, healthy and happier.

Joe Wicks’ top 3 tips are:

  1. Make movement fun. Turn the music on 10 minutes tidy up time, Ready. Steady, Go!
  2. Get outside even when it’s raining – puddle jumping is fun for everyone
  3. School Run Adventures – Race to lampposts, hop, skip and jump between them.

What will you do? Lets Move!

Garden Ginnels

Ginnel Gardeners

Spring has sprung across Bradford – and it’s time to show our ginnels some love.

From Keighley Central to Bowling & Barkerend, Tong, Bradford Moor and the City, our ginnels are the hidden threads that stitch our communities together. Brightening corners in Eccleshill, linking streets in Great Horton, through Bolton & Undercliffe and winding through Heaton and Manningham, they are often unloved and unseen.

Not anymore! We're inviting people to roll up their sleeves and transform these everyday pathways into welcoming spaces their whole community can enjoy. A few planters, a sweep and tidy, maybe even a splash of colour – small actions make a big difference. Imagine walking through your local ginnel and seeing flowers, instead of litter, friendly faces instead of forgotten spaces.

Cleaner, greener ginnels don’t just look good – they build pride, spark conversation and help everyone feel safer.

For more information and to get involved in the Nature and Wellbeing programme please click here to send an email.

You can download a copy of the Ginnel Garden Guidebook and lookout for free workshops about how to make a difference in your neighbourhood.

Staying In

Read Hooked by Asako Yuzuki

In early 2025, almost every bookshop in the country had one canary-yellow, cow-emblazoned bestselling title front and centre: Butter. Penned by award-winning Japanese author Asako Yuzuki in 2017, translator Polly Barton brought the culinary thriller to the UK market with her English translation in 2024 – and, centring on a journalist investigating a food-obsessed accused murderer, it was an instant hit. And now Barton is back, delving into Yuzuki’s back catalogue to bring her 2015 novel, Nairu pachi no joshi-kai (Nile Perch Women's Club), to our bookshelves. Renamed Hooked with a striking pink fish can cover, it’s another deliciously disturbing tale set in contemporary Japan exploring food, womanhood and loneliness as an obsessive relationship unfolds between a straightlaced housewife and a brash woman unafraid of subverting social norms. Out today.

Going Out

See The New David Hockney Exhibition

A Year in Normandie by David Hockney

British artist David Hockney’s new exhibition is now open at the Serpentine. At the heart of the show is A Year in Normandie, a 90m-long piece inspired by the historic Bayeux Tapestry that captures the changing seasons at Hockney’s former studio in Normandy. It is the artwork’s first time coming to London – corresponding perfectly with the Bayeux Tapestry returning to the city later this year for the first time since its creation in the 11th century. In our latest issue, former minister for culture Ed Vaizey writes about the time he met Hockney at a creative industries event during the London Olympics back in 2012. ‘The poor Queen was standing on a podium in front of us, where for an hour she received the great and the good of the arts world,’ he remembers. ‘We both marvelled at her stamina.’ He adds, ‘Hockney, of course, has spoken out against the tapestry coming to London, arguing that moving it will risk irreparable damage to this hugely fragile art work, surely one of the masterpieces of the modern world. I disagree. It is a risk worth taking, if only to revive interest in this extraordinary piece – and perhaps to remind the Brits of our European heritage. In any event, Hockney’s homage will be a masterpiece in itself.’ Until 23 August, serpentinegalleries.org

Irish Cheese and Dairy

Local Cheese? Yes, Please.

Hi

For many visitors, Ireland conjures up images of green fields, wild coastlines and a rich history of music and storytelling. What they might not realise is that tucked perfectly into that picture is Ireland’s amazing dairy scene — particularly its butter and cheese.

Thanks to our mild climate and long growing season, cattle graze on lush pasture for much of the year, producing milk that is naturally rich and full of flavour. Today, Irish dairy enjoys a reputation that rivals some of Europe’s best. From the golden butter spread generously across warm soda bread to the farmhouse cheeses crafted in small creameries across the countryside, Irish dairy remains a quiet point of national pride.

On any travel journey with us, we promise you’ll be fabulously well fed. After all, a trip to Ireland isn’t just about dramatic landscapes and fascinating history — it’s also about enjoying delicious local food (cheese included) along the way.

The trip exceeded my expectations... All accommodations were better than expected. Food was excellent. I highly recommend Wilderness Ireland as a venue. From the beginning to the end everything was planned tastefully. We visited places that were off the beaten path that I would had not been able to do on my own.

Weekly Escape

Hey

I nearly didn’t stop here.

Driving through Oakworth, Holden Park looks exactly like what you’d expect from a Yorkshire village park - a bit of grass, a few trees, somewhere locals walk their dogs.

Nothing about it suggests you should pull over.

But I had a spare hour and thought why not?

Within ten minutes I realised this wasn’t a park at all.

I found steps disappearing into rock walls.
Then tunnels.
Then a network of caves.

Actual man-made caverns.

Light filters down through cracks in the ceiling, stairways twist through the stone, and suddenly you’re climbing above the treetops looking across the valley wondering how on earth this place isn’t famous.

It turns out the park once belonged to Sir Isaac Holden, who built follies, grottos and hidden walkways across his estate purely for enjoyment. The grand house is gone now, but the playful landscape he created is still there - quietly sitting in the middle of a village most people simply pass through on the way to Haworth.

That’s what makes it special.

It’s not a long hike.
It’s not a “day out” attraction.
It’s just an hour of wandering, exploring, and seeing what you stumble across.

The sort of place where you don’t follow a route - you explore.

I’ve put together a full guide with parking tips, what to look out for, and the hidden features you’ll almost certainly miss without knowing they’re there.

👉 Read the full guide to Holden Park here:
https://getlost.blog/holden-park-oakworth/

If you visit, take your time.
It’s one of those places that rewards curiosity far more than planning.

Sometimes the smallest places create the biggest memories.

Until our next adventure,
