Staying In

Watch Young Sherlock

There’s a new Sherlock Holmes on the block, and this time he’s an unruly 19-year-old brought to life by Hero Fiennes Tiffin and directed by Guy Ritchie. Studying at Oxford University, in Young Sherlock, he’s as inquisitive as we know Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed detective to be, but in this younger rendition he is raw, unfiltered and undisciplined. But a murder in the city sets him onto his first real case… Star Holly Cattle tells us to expect ‘a classic Guy Ritchie action packed thriller: dark, light, scary and funny all at breakneck speed. Blink and you’re behind.’ She stars as ‘badass’ Bea, who plays a pivotal role in the drama – but no spoilers here. What we can tell you is that she is ‘incredibly intelligent, charming and disarming and a total chameleon,’ as Holly puts it – ‘a master of manipulation and mimicry and she’ll crush anyone in her way’. She’s also ‘glued to Bucephalus Hodge who’s played by Colin Firth’, and BTS that meant ‘arguing over who was having the last Cadbury’s twirl and asking each other if they were watching our closeup because “that’s how it’s done and you’d do well to learn”,’ Holly says. Read our full interview here to find out moreNow streaming on Prime Video.

Going Out

Book One Of London’s Hottest Restaurants

Here at C&TH we love discovering off-the-beaten-track restaurants – those quiet neighbourhood joints where you can spontaneously waltz in for dinner with no booking. But it’s hard not to be curious about the ultra-popular spots too, where nabbing a table is akin to securing Glastonbury tickets. Guaranteeing a table at these joints requires forward planning: you need to know exactly when reservations open and be ready to go (often with your card details to put down a deposit). At A-list favourite The Dover, for instance, bookings drop 28 days ahead for lunch and 21 days ahead for dinner – and if you’re not successful, turn on the ‘alert me’ option to get notified when someone cancels. For cult favourite Crisp Pizza (which now operates from The Marlborough pub in Mayfair), tables are released on Mondays at 12pm for the following six weeks – but you can also queue (arrive for 11am, add your name to the waitlist and have a drink). No tables going at Oma in Borough Market? Head to no-bookings sister restaurant Agora downstairs, which offers similar (and slightly cheaper) Greek fare. Find other hot tips here.

Property Of The Day

If you wanted a high-quality piano in the 19th century, you probably would’ve bought it from Chappell & Co. Beethoven himself was a fan of the brand, as was Richard Strauss and Jean Sibelius. And now their piano-making factories in Camden have been transformed into a stunning industrial penthouse.

Available to rent for £6,500 per week or buy for £7.5m, andersonrose.co.uk

Little Luxury

We’re loving the new suede bag collection from Fairfax & Favor, Aviemore. With a structured shape, antique brass hardware and a removable strap, this Tan Handbag will go with anything and is the perfect spring accessory. £375, fairfaxandfavor.com

Competition Time

Want to plan the perfect weekend escape, but can’t quite decide where? Well you’re in luck, PoB Hotels is offering you the chance to win a £500 Night & Day voucher to use at any of its 56 hotels. Enter our competition here.

Psssst…

If you’re a Clarkson’s Farm fan, we’ve got good news: Jeremy Clarkson has revealed series five will come out in May, in line with previous season release dates. Rumour has it there will be a cameo from Prince William too.

Whatever You Do, Don’t

Hang all your art in a perfect grid, says interior designer and creative consultant at Joanna Wood, Hattie Hansard – ‘unless the room is very architectural or modern and perfectly balanced.’ She adds that this look can very quickly look too ‘corporate’ if you’re not careful. Find more wall art tips here.

Your monthly round-up of the best of our Magazine

March 2026

Spring has sprung. Blossoms are breaking through. The mornings and evenings are lighter. And the cold wet days are thankfully behind us, replaced by slightly warmer wet days. Still, it pays to be optimistic, and someone who always conveys such spirit is the subject of our headline longread, our Associate Artist, Love Ssega.

This month sees our second ever Montreux Jazz Festival Residency at the Southbank Centre and we’ve two related pieces for you; an introduction to rising star Ramzi Hammad, and a soulful playlist from Women In Jazz founder Louise Paley. And sticking with music, we ask (and answer) the question we’ve all pondered at some point – what exactly does a conductor do?

Elsewhere in issue 13 of The Tonic we’ve artistic insight as dancer Daniel Hay-Gordon shares his creative process and mixed media artist Caroline Achaintre guides us around her studio. We offer an introduction to current Hayward Gallery exhibition Chiharu Shiota: Threads of Life, and step back into our archive to talk friendship with Ece Temelkuran. Feels brighter already, doesn’t it?

Love story

Love Ssega, wearing a multi-coloured outfit and holding a hand-held microphone as he performs inside the National Gallery; pictures with ornate frames are on the walls behind him.

Love Ssega: ‘If you’ve an opportunity to do something you’ve got an interest in, go for it’

The musician, performance artist and, perhaps most pertinently, Southbank Centre Associate Artist discusses Clean Bandit, chemical engineering and Cluedo with Martin Creed in this in-depth interview.

 All that jazz

Louise Paley, a young White woman with long brown hair, wearing a long sleeved pink dress

My mixtape: Louise Paley’s ten women in jazz you need to hear

Get in the mood for Southbank Centre x Montreux Jazz Festival Residency with this soulfully smooth soundtrack of contemporary performers from Women in Jazz founder Louise Paley.

Dan, dance, dancer

Dancer Daniel Hay-Gordon performs; he is mid-dance with one arm and one leg raised on an otherwise empty stage

How I create… with Thick & Tight’s Daniel Hay-Gordon

The dancer, choreographer and Thick & Tight co-director discusses taking cues from Brian Eno and staying disciplined through a love of his work.

Thread carefully

Get an introduction to the artist and her celebrated immersive large-scale installations, currently on show in our Hayward Gallery.

Drumming of age

Portrait of a young man with curly hair and a mustache wearing a black beanie, a plaid overshirt, and a dark hoodie, looking directly at the camera.

Who is jazz musician Ramzi Hammad?

Get to know a little bit more about the Swiss-Palestinian drummer who this month brings his collective to London as part of the Montreux Jazz Festival Residency.

Arts unravelled: what does a conductor do?

We offer the answer to one of the most commonly asked questions of classical music, with the help of a couple of famous faces.

Summer in Ireland

Ireland, Perfectly Timed

Hi

What’s that old saying about romantic love — it’s all about the right person at the right time? We think the same holds true for travel: the perfect place, at the perfect time.

Our expert trip designers craft each adventure with care, thoughtfully planning around the rhythm of Ireland’s seasons to ensure you experience the very best of them. This might mean exploring a particular island to spot wildlife, visiting iconic sites when they’re at their quietest, or connecting with our culture by joining in with local traditions and celebrations.

With summer on the horizon, here are our favourite ways to experience Ireland during some of our brightest and most beautiful months.

Which Month Is Your Match?

Why Visit Ireland in May

May is a beautiful month in Ireland. Spring has well and truly sprung, and the days often bring lovely settled weather perfect for spending as much time as possible outdoors. Historical sites and iconic landscapes remain quiet, making it an ideal month for peaceful exploration.

Trips in May

Why Visit Ireland in June

June brings long, bright days, with the summer solstice landing on the 21st. Seabirds nest on coastal cliffs, and wildflowers bloom across fields and meadows. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are now in abundance, making for excellent, nourishing meals straight from field to fork.

Trips in June

Why Visit Ireland in July

High summer in Ireland doesn’t mean hiding indoors because it’s too hot; instead, it often brings lots of sunshine combined with a refreshing breeze, which makes it the perfect month for spending time cycling by the ocean, exploring historical sites or walking in the hills spotting wild flowers.

Trips in July

Why Visit Ireland in August

In August, the rolling countryside and patchwork fields of Ireland are at their most vibrant. There are big blue skies overhead and lakes sparkling in the summer sun. It is warm and clear, the mornings crisp and the evenings golden — perfect for long walks, picnics, and relaxed exploring.

Creative Kirklees
Latest Events, News and Opportunities

Wednesday, March 4th

Creativity is in full bloom across Kirklees this month!

Celebrate International Women’s Day early with two standout events on 7 Marcha zine‑making workshop at West Yorkshire Print Workshop, and SisterHudd’s launch of their 18‑month programme supporting women and women‑fronted artists at the Northern Quarter.

As spring arrives, The Kirkwood’s Mothers Day in Bloom installation at Oakwell Hall offers a creative and reflective tribute to the women who have shaped our lives, blending creativity with remembrance while supporting the hospice’s vital work.

Huddersfield’s much‑loved St Patrick’s Day Parade celebration is back, bringing colour, music, and community spirit to the town centre! Expect vibrant performances, joyful celebrations, and a fantastic atmosphere.

Meanwhile, the creative community gathers once again as Wilson’s Republic returns with #15 Perspective, an evening of creative inspiration, talks and connection with like‑minded creatives.

These events capture the breadth of creativity happening across Kirklees right now, see more below and on on our websites.
