Welcome to your Spring update from Bradford District Parks, sharing news, initiatives and opportunities across our green spaces as we move through the seasons.
Creating More Nature Friendly Spaces Across Bradford
Bradford District Parks is set to gain more nature‑friendly areas, supporting everything from wildflowers to hedgehogs, frogs, birds, and bats. The Parks Service is adjusting mowing schedules so that key parks and sports areas stay regularly maintained with some selected zones cut less often to encourage meadow growth—creating around 190,000 square metres of richer habitat.
Pesticide use is also being reduced in less formal areas, with spraying phased out around trees, paths, and park furniture. Alternative methods like steam and heat treatments are being explored for future use.
These updates were reported to the Council’s Regeneration and Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committee in December 2025.
Bradford District to Bloom with 50 Community Orchards
Bradford District has reached a major milestone with planting of its 50th community orchard. Working with Fruit Works Co-operative, Bradford Council continues to grow spaces that support health, well-being and community connection.
Funded by Living Well, 10 new orchards are coming to Allerton, Bowling, Queensbury, Bierley, Farcliffe, Queensbury and Keighley, bringing fresh fruit closer to home and helping communities grow together.
Lets make Bradford greener, healthier and more connected - one orchard at a time.
Bradford Pennine Gateway Named Global ‘Wonder’ for 2026!
Bradford’s Pennine Gateway National Nature Reserve has been named one of Condé Nast Traveller’s ‘Seven Wonders of the World for 2026’, the only UK destination to make the list.
Designated in May 2025, the 1,272-hectare reserve links eight stunning sites, including Ilkley Moor, Shipley Glen, and St Ives Estate. This international recognition follows Bradford’s success as the 2025 UK City of Culture, highlighting the area’s rich habitats and diverse wildlife.
The National Nature Reserve is part of the King’s Series of National Nature Reserves, supporting efforts to protect 30% of land for nature by 2030.
Creating Better Play for Bradford’s Young Families
Parks and Green Spaces and Better Start Bradford are working together to create more welcoming and imaginative outdoor spaces for young children. New nature‑inspired play features, open areas for active and creative play, and “take a book, leave a book” share‑libraries are being added to selected parks.
By combining play, nature, and community learning, these improved spaces will give families more opportunities to explore, grow, and enjoy the outdoors together.

The Great Bradford Spring Clean 2026
The gloves are going on, the bags are ready and the Great Bradford Spring Clean is ready to start.
The annual spring clean, taking place from 13 to 29 March, aims to improve the local environment and foster a sense of civic pride.
Residents, local business, schools and community groups are being asked to come together to help make a positive impact in their neighbourhood while working together to protect the environment.
Anyone wanting to organise a community clean-up can contact their local area co-ordinator's office:
We will supply bin bags and a bag collection service and provide advice to help residents and communities to get involved in the campaign.
Secondary school places confirmed for Bradford families
This week, thousands of Bradford families found out their child’s secondary school place for September.
We’re pleased that the vast majority of children who applied on time have been offered a place at one of their preferred schools. This includes 92% receiving one of their top three choices, and 79% getting their first-preferred school.
Moving up to secondary school can feel like a big change. Once you know your child’s school, it’s a good time to start thinking about how to support them.
To help you get ready, our partners at Togetherness offer free online resources and tips — including free online learning using the code BDPARENTS.
A pub in Shipley has installed a new front, following a shopfront grant from the Shipley Towns Fund.
The Fox on Briggate received £8,500 towards the work, which has seen the front of the building upgraded. Work included replacing the 1980s dilapidated shopfront which was leaking and poorly insulated.
Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) clubs this Easter
If your child gets benefits-related free school meals you can also take advantage of free activities and experiences during the summer school holidays with the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme.
There are more than 100 HAF holiday clubs running this Easter offering a huge range of fun activities at venues across the district.
Places are free for children who live in Bradford District and are eligible for benefits-related free school meals and for children with special educational needs or disabilities. They also get a free healthy meal while at the club.
Places are limited and fill up fast so, take a look at what is on offer and book now to avoid missing out.
School Streets to be made permanent at two more schools in the Bradford district
Two more schools in the Bradford district have made their trial School Streets permanent. Wilsden Primary School and Girlington Primary School now have permanent School Streets.
School Streets are designed to create car free spaces for people around schools to improve safety, as well as reduce traffic congestion and air pollution and encourage more people to walk or cycle at least part of the journey to school. A School Street restricts vehicle access near to a school during the busy times when children are dropped off and picked up.

The campaign invites everyone to “Go All In” – using reading to explore the things you already love, whether that’s sport, music, films, food, nature or family time. From books and magazines to comics and audiobooks, it all counts.
Throughout 2026, we will work with schools, libraries, community groups and volunteers to build a district‑wide reading movement.
Residents are encouraged to visit their local library, take part in upcoming activities, or make a simple pledge to Go All In on reading.
Our Bradford Heritage Action Zone will be hosting the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) to deliver an introductory course to help old building owners, custodians and users to develop a better understanding of their building.
The course will explain the value of traditional buildings, how they are constructed and differ from new buildings, how they can decay, and how to spot and tackle common problems.
The day long course includes a walking/observation exercise to look at local building types and will give practical advice for maintenance, dealing with damp and improving your old building for energy efficiency.
This session, which takes place at the Bradford Mechanics Institute on Tuesday 24 March from 10am to 4.30pm, is free to attend and open to anyone with an interest in caring for old buildings.
We are inviting local businesses and suppliers to a special “Meet the Buyer” event.
It will be a fantastic opportunity to connect directly with council procurers and learn more about how the council buys good, works and services. It will also give the chance to understand upcoming opportunities, network with other local suppliers and gain practical advice on how to tender for council contracts.
This is a free event on Monday, 18 May with two sessions at 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm in the Banqueting Hall, City Hall, Bradford.
The sessions will be identical and places for this event are limited and will be allocated on a first-come first served basis and only two representatives per organisation are permitted.

There’s a new Sherlock Holmes on the block, and this time he’s an unruly 19-year-old brought to life by Hero Fiennes Tiffin and directed by Guy Ritchie. Studying at Oxford University, in Young Sherlock, he’s as inquisitive as we know Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed detective to be, but in this younger rendition he is raw, unfiltered and undisciplined. But a murder in the city sets him onto his first real case… Star Holly Cattle tells us to expect ‘a classic Guy Ritchie action packed thriller: dark, light, scary and funny all at breakneck speed. Blink and you’re behind.’ She stars as ‘badass’ Bea, who plays a pivotal role in the drama – but no spoilers here. What we can tell you is that she is ‘incredibly intelligent, charming and disarming and a total chameleon,’ as Holly puts it – ‘a master of manipulation and mimicry and she’ll crush anyone in her way’. She’s also ‘glued to Bucephalus Hodge who’s played by Colin Firth’, and BTS that meant ‘arguing over who was having the last Cadbury’s twirl and asking each other if they were watching our closeup because “that’s how it’s done and you’d do well to learn”,’ Holly says. Read our full interview here to find out more. Now streaming on Prime Video.
Going Out
Book One Of London’s Hottest Restaurants
Here at C&TH we love discovering off-the-beaten-track restaurants – those quiet neighbourhood joints where you can spontaneously waltz in for dinner with no booking. But it’s hard not to be curious about the ultra-popular spots too, where nabbing a table is akin to securing Glastonbury tickets. Guaranteeing a table at these joints requires forward planning: you need to know exactly when reservations open and be ready to go (often with your card details to put down a deposit). At A-list favourite The Dover, for instance, bookings drop 28 days ahead for lunch and 21 days ahead for dinner – and if you’re not successful, turn on the ‘alert me’ option to get notified when someone cancels. For cult favourite Crisp Pizza (which now operates from The Marlborough pub in Mayfair), tables are released on Mondays at 12pm for the following six weeks – but you can also queue (arrive for 11am, add your name to the waitlist and have a drink). No tables going at Oma in Borough Market? Head to no-bookings sister restaurant Agora downstairs, which offers similar (and slightly cheaper) Greek fare. Find other hot tips here.
Property Of The Day
If you wanted a high-quality piano in the 19th century, you probably would’ve bought it from Chappell & Co. Beethoven himself was a fan of the brand, as was Richard Strauss and Jean Sibelius. And now their piano-making factories in Camden have been transformed into a stunning industrial penthouse.

Whatever You Do, Don’t
Hang all your art in a perfect grid, says interior designer and creative consultant at Joanna Wood, Hattie Hansard – ‘unless the room is very architectural or modern and perfectly balanced.’ She adds that this look can very quickly look too ‘corporate’ if you’re not careful. Your monthly round-up of the best of our Magazine
March 2026
Spring has sprung. Blossoms are breaking through. The mornings and evenings are lighter. And the cold wet days are thankfully behind us, replaced by slightly warmer wet days. Still, it pays to be optimistic, and someone who always conveys such spirit is the subject of our headline longread, our Associate Artist, Love Ssega.
This month sees our second ever Montreux Jazz Festival Residency at the Southbank Centre and we’ve two related pieces for you; an introduction to rising star Ramzi Hammad, and a soulful playlist from Women In Jazz founder Louise Paley. And sticking with music, we ask (and answer) the question we’ve all pondered at some point – what exactly does a conductor do?
Elsewhere in issue 13 of The Tonic we’ve artistic insight as dancer Daniel Hay-Gordon shares his creative process and mixed media artist Caroline Achaintre guides us around her studio. We offer an introduction to current Hayward Gallery exhibition Chiharu Shiota: Threads of Life, and step back into our archive to talk friendship with Ece Temelkuran. Feels brighter already, doesn’t it?

With summer on the horizon, here are our favourite ways to experience Ireland during some of our brightest and most beautiful months.
May is a beautiful month in Ireland. Spring has well and truly sprung, and the days often bring lovely settled weather perfect for spending as much time as possible outdoors. Historical sites and iconic landscapes remain quiet, making it an ideal month for peaceful exploration.
June brings long, bright days, with the summer solstice landing on the 21st. Seabirds nest on coastal cliffs, and wildflowers bloom across fields and meadows. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are now in abundance, making for excellent, nourishing meals straight from field to fork.
High summer in Ireland doesn’t mean hiding indoors because it’s too hot; instead, it often brings lots of sunshine combined with a refreshing breeze, which makes it the perfect month for spending time cycling by the ocean, exploring historical sites or walking in the hills spotting wild flowers.
In August, the rolling countryside and patchwork fields of Ireland are at their most vibrant. There are big blue skies overhead and lakes sparkling in the summer sun. It is warm and clear, the mornings crisp and the evenings golden — perfect for long walks, picnics, and relaxed exploring.
With fresh flowers, fluffy lambs frolicking on rolling hills, and colourful rainbows following spring showers, the wild beauty of Ireland in springtime will fill your heart for years to come.
Soaring cliffs, buzzing little towns and a way of life forever inspired by the sea, that's what you'll find on Ireland's epic Wild Atlantic Way! Ready to go?
Out in the Atlantic Ocean, a world away from anywhere, sits one of Ireland's most exceptional treasures: the 6th century monastic site of Skellig Micheal.
Charming hosts, amazing views and even more delightful rooms to stay in – get a taste of pure Irish charm at one of the many B&Bs along the Wild Atlantic Way.

BANK OF DAVE THE MUSICAL
“If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s this: everybody hates bankers.”
Bank of Dave: The Musical is a home-grown, brand-new British musical - bursting with northern grit, laugh-out-loud humour and what Dave himself calls “the best songs in any musical ever.”
This feel-good show tells the true-ish story of Dave Fishwick: Burnley born and bred, and no ordinary man. A self-made millionaire, Dave spent years helping local people and small businesses when hard-nosed banks turned them away. Frustrated by the system, he has an idea…set up his own bank and put the profits straight back into his community.
From Sunday Times bestseller to Netflix’s #1 UK film, Dave’s inspiring underdog story now bursts onto the stage as a laugh-out-loud British musical packed with heart, humour and cracking new music.
"The humour of The Full Monty with the spirit of Billy Elliot, but with a few more ba*tard bankers, and an unlikely hero from Burnley!" - Dave Fishwick
BANK OF DAVE THE MUSICAL is produced by ROYO, Future Artists Entertainment, Curve and Lowry. Katie Lander is the consultant for Finestripe Productions.

To celebrate this year’s World Book Day, we have partnered up with Showroom Cinema, to bring together an event perfect for pre-school families.
On 5 March at the Showroom Cinema, children can enjoy craft activities led by our very own Libraries Team before viewing a half hour animated film adaptation of the much-loved book by author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler, The Scarecrows' Wedding.
The cover of A Road for All Seasons, and its author Harry Bucknall
A difficult period in British politics left writer Harry Bucknall questioning whether he really knew the place he called home. Propelled by a desire to better understand our island nation, Harry embarked on a series of four journeys across Britain that would mirror the changing seasons, totalling a distance of over 6,500 miles.
Uplifting, joyous and charming, A Road for All Seasons is a vivid social and cultural snapshot of 21st-century Britain.

How the Library (Not the Prince) Saved Rapunzel; Tilly and the Bookwanderers; Read With Pride
To mark World Book Day, we've picked three of our favourite children's and YA books about books (and libraries).
Picture book: How the Library (Not the Prince) Saved Rapunzel, by Wendy Meddour and illustrated by Rebecca Ashdown.
Rapunzel is bored, and not even a handsome prince can rouse her from her apathy. But then she gets a job offer from the library and it changes her life! (This really works).
Junior fiction: Pages & Co: Tilly and the Bookwanderers, by Anna James.
The first in a delightful series in which beloved book characters venture out from their pages into real life.
Young Adult: The Paper & Hearts Society: Read With Pride, by Lucy Powrie.
A group of queer teenagers come together to defend the freedom to read. Second in a series but can be read as a standalone.
