Are you
October ready?
With Green Libraries Week, and National Poetry Day, falling in
October (pun intended...) we thought it'd be a good opportunity for
you all to get creative and write some poetry. Half term is coming
up, so there's lots of time to get out in nature and get inspired.
Go for a walk in a local park, around your town or village, take
part in one of our half term storytrails, or crunch leaves up and
down your street or garden. Think about the sounds, smells, tastes
and textures around you. Is it a cool, clear, crisp, sunny day, or
a moody, grey stomping around sort of a day? What can you see? Are
you cold or wrapped up snuggly and warm?
Have a look at our library poetry books for
inspiration, either in our libraries or in our online collection on Overdrive
or Libby. A
Year of Nature Poems by Poet Laureate Joseph
Coelho and illustrated by Kelly Louise Judd is a great starting
point.
We'd love to read your poems, so if you share on
socials, don't forget to tag us!

Adventures- Spooky Theme
We've got a whole ghost
of spine-tingling books in the Spooky themed Library Adventures collection
online on Overdrive and on our app, Libby.
You can also visit your local library to search out
some spooky books ready for Halloween...Does your library have the
Spooky theme at the moment? If so, check out the spook-tacular
displays of new books. If your library is celebrating a different
theme, remember, all our regular books are still there on the
shelves, so if you fancy being frightened, are jiggling for a
jump-scare or want to unravel the myths of the paranormal with a
non-fiction book, just come and look, or ask the staff...if you
dare...
Book of
the month
Yes, it's been out for 4 years, but this Yoto Carnegie
Award winning tale is just as fresh and relevant as ever, and with
it being October....we couldn't resist!
This is the book for you if you've dreamed of living
wild, being wild and fully embracing nature. Katya Balen
beautifully guides us through the story of October and her Dad who
live in the woods and know every tree, rock and lake. Their seemly
idyllic existence however is shattered the year October turns 11,
the year she rescues a baby barn owl, the year her Dad falls from a
tree and the year her biological mother reappears. Katya manages to
capture the emotions and chaos of a life turned upside down, plucked
from the tranquil woodland and thrust into the bustling "real
world".
We have physical copies of this book in our library
buildings, and we have eBook copies and also eAudio books-
both of which you can download for free through our free Libby app.
If the copy you'd like is being borrowed by someone
else, no worries, just put in a free reservation and you'll get a
copy when one becomes available! Whilst you are waiting...check our
Katya Balen's many other books, including,
Foxlights, The Light In Everything, Ghostlines, The Thames and Tide
Club and Little House.
Storytrails
Join us for an Autumn story trail this half term. Our
inspiration is a wild and wondrous story of true bravery and
discovering friendship in the most unexpected of places. Search for
the pictures, experience the story and get creative with crafts.
These self guided events are free of charge and can be
pre-booked through Ticketsource to
help with our planning (or just turn up if it's a last minute
decision!).

Local
Studies Library
Our Local Studies team have been getting spooky by
delving into Yorkshire Myths and Legends this month. There are said
to be all sorts of creatures with connections to our local
landscape, including dragons, ghosts, giants, devils and even Robin
Hood himself! The picture above is of a Barguest..."an evil
spirit in the form of a dog or pig or other animal, displaying
teeth, claws and large, flaming eyes said to be an omen of bad
fortune in Yorkshire legend."-The Yorkshire Dictionary of Dialect,
Tradition and Folklore.

Centre in Paddock

a hot meal, raffle, refreshments, games and activities.
