Birmingham Literature Festival free online events

Last chance to book for tonight:

Last Chance to Book: Free Online Events

This week we have two free online events that you won't want to miss!

TONIGHT (8th October) 7-8pm: Mammoth with Eva Baltasar

Mammoth’s protagonist is a disenchanted young lesbian. Alienated by life in the city and determined to become pregnant, she swaps her life in the city for an isolated farmhouse, seduces men at random, befriends a shepherd, nurses lambs, battles stray cats, waits tables, cleans house, and dabbles in sex work – all in pursuit of life in the raw.

Like no other pastoral you have ever read, Mammoth is a short explosion of a novel that stays with you long after you leave its pages.

We are really excited to be joined by International Booker Prize shortlisted author Eva Baltasar, joined by her interpreter Eva Estrany, in the first of our online events.

Chaired by Jonathan Davidson.

TOMORROW NIGHT (9th October) 7-8pm: Take What You Need with Idra Novey

Set in the Allegheny Mountains of Appalachia, Take What You Need explores the parallel lives of Leah and her estranged stepmother Jean. Called home following Jean’s death, Leah must sort through her complicated relationship with her stepmother, the increasingly hostile and poverty ravaged rural hometown she left behind and the giant sculptures filling Jean’s rundown home.

Join us for an evening with Idra Novey to talk about a novel that explores art making, loneliness and the continuing mystery of the people we love the most, but perhaps understand the least.

Chaired by Anna Metcalfe.
