by Ridiculusmus
Saturday 19th October at 7.30pm

The legendary independent theatre double act of Jon Haynes and David Woods pull out every trick in their theatrical playbook to create a fresh takeon Shakespeare’s much-loved clowns, re-enacting all the preceding acts of the original and meticulously staging the famous graveyard scene in all its 420 year-old glory.

Mixing the mundane with the magical; moments of banal idiocy are interspersed with ones of cinematic elegance to an underscore of groans, grunts and the odd Shakespearean aside.

From ‘Masters of Storytelling’ (FOURTHWALL) Wright&Grainger, HELIOS is the award-winning follow up to the internationally-acclaimed ORPHEUS, EURYDICE, and THE GODS THE GODS THE GODS. Join them at the warehouse with a tape player - and a delicate tale to tell.
A story about the son of the god of the sun, HELIOS transplants the Ancient Greek tale into a  modern-day myth wound round the winding roads of rural England - and into the everyday living of a towering city.

Our cafe renovation is well underway, and we’re looking forward to unveiling the fresh new space soon! This revamp will create an inviting atmosphere for our audiences, offering a perfect place to relax before and after shows. We can’t wait to welcome you back when we reopen in November.

What's On in November

We’re coming back with a bang in November, and the calendar is already filling up with fantastic events.

  • Comedy Night – November 13th: Our Comedy Night is back, with an exciting headliner who’s sure to bring the house down (we can’t reveal their name just yet, but trust us—you’ll love them!). Participants from these workshops will have the chance to perform at our upcoming Comedy Nights, giving them real-world stage experience in front of a live audience.

The workshops are open to women and non-binary folks, especially of the global majority.

The next Intro to Comedy session is on November 23rd, from 10 AM to 4 PM. If you’re interested in learning the ropes of comedy, sign up now via Eventbrite. Spaces are limited!

This is an exciting opportunity for artists to explore, experiment and develop in a supportive space. If you’re keen to take part, apply now! More information and the application link can be found here.

The latest from the Jurassic Coast Trust team

You may have noticed a few changes to the Science part of the website, we are currently re-developing the Science & Heritage part of our website to make it easier for you to naviagate find what you are looking for. This is an ongoing project that will be completely shortly but if you do have any suggestions, please let us know

For the next phase of the Geo-Heritage Sustainability Study, we have been working on how we understand the functional setting of the World Heritage Site. We have been pulling together simple frameworks for how the Jurassic Coast acts as an interlinked and dynamic system in order to better understand which areas may be at risk.

Saskia entered the Geo-Heritage Sustainability Study into the Engineering Group of the Geological Society of London's annual Glossop Award and has been shortlisted. She will be presenting about the project at Burlington House in the coming weeks - fingers crossed.

Some of the team have been out monitoring some of the SSSI areas. As highlighted in our last update, we have recently been undertaking some fieldwork to help monitor the condition of import Earth science features within some of Dorset's coastal Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs). These kinds of features are assessed every few years to make sure they haven't been damaged. This time the location was location is Durlston Bay and Swanage looking at rocks that were laid down in lagoons and rivers in the early Cretaceous...and fotrunately we had good weather for it!

We are working hard on the content for the next Jurassic Coast Collection newsletter, sign up here to see it when it comes out.

Last but not least, a massive THANK-YOU to Purbeck ice cream for funding our place at the Dorset County Show. It was a bit wet and muddy(!) but it was wonderful to speak to those people that did brave the weather and we couldn't have been there without the support of Purbeck ice cream.

Newlands Holiday Park is excited to partner with the Jurassic Coast Trust to offer you the chance to win a fantastic 4-night stay in one of our beautiful Lyme caravans at Newlands Holidays. Nestled in the heart of the Jurassic Coast, our Lyme caravans provide the perfect getaway for families, couples, or solo travellers looking to explore the stunning landscapes of Dorset. Imagine waking up to the fresh sea breeze, with the iconic Jurassic Coast just a short stroll away. Whether you're keen on fossil hunting, enjoying coastal walks, or simply relaxing in our comfortable accommodations, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

Terms & conditions apply: 4 night stay on dates: Monday 28th April-Friday 2nd May 2025. Maximum of 6 guests, mixture of adults and children. Must be minimum of 1 Adult. This holiday cannot be substituted for cash alternatives and if not used will be forfeited. The 4-night stay cannot be refunded or re-arranged once booked and must be booked via phone directly with Newlands Holidays.

The two stylish holiday cottages at Stonebarrow Manor could be the perfect destination for your next family seaside holiday.

‘Seagull Cottage’ has two bedrooms and sleeps four.

‘Number 7’ has three bedrooms and sleeps in three bedrooms – one with an ensuite.

Stonebarrow Manor is a recently renovated 16th Century manor house in the tranquil seaside village of Charmouth; only a short walk from the family-friendly beach on the famous Jurassic Coast, England’s only World Heritage Site.

Perfect for a relaxing seaside break and a chance to unwind; the cottages are in an elevated position with west-facing views across the valley from the patio – ideal for sitting outside on long summer evenings.

Both cottages have parking right outside, high-speed fibre broadband and the latest electric heating system for cosy nights in during the winter months.

Have you may have seen the recent news from Monkey World?

Orphan of bush meat trade, chimpanzee Chocolat, has travelled from Kenya to sweet new home at Monkey World, Dorset UK. DHL Express assisted and supported this very special delivery, giving the semi-paralysed chimpanzee a new home with others of her own kind at the Dorset sanctuary.

JURASSIC COAST HOTSPOTS...

Kimmeridge Bay

Just half a mile southwest of Kimmeridge village, the renowned Kimmeridge Bay offers unparalleled geological features on the Jurassic Coast and an array of accessible marine wildlife. With natural rock ledges extending into the bay, it's an ideal spot for rockpooling. The bay is also a hub for water sports, with its warm, shallow waters providing perfect conditions for snorkelling, diving, surfing, and windsurfing, especially for beginners due to low tides and good visibility.

Kimmeridge Bay, part of the privately owned Smedmore Estate, provides parking facilities included in the toll road cost. A short, bumpy footpath leads from the car park to the shoreline, with toilets available at both locations. The bay also offers accessibility features, with a gently sloping gravel path leading to the Kimmeridge Wild Seas Centre and designated disabled parking bays.

Visitors can explore the bay's marine life at the Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre. The Etches Collection Museum of Jurassic Marine Life, located in Kimmeridge village, houses an impressive collection of unique marine fossils.

More choughs released in Dover

Exciting news for bird enthusiasts: the red-billed chough is returning to the Kent Downs National Landscape! Thanks to a collaboration between conservation charities such as Wildwood Trust and Kent Wildlife Trust, 19 choughs have now been successfully reintroduced to Dover.

These striking birds, which vanished from Kent over 200 years ago, are thriving in restored chalk grassland habitats. With plans to release up to 50 choughs by 2028, this project marks a significant step towards revitalising the region's wildlife and natural heritage.

The chough reintroduction project was supported by the Kent Downs National Landscape through Defra's Farming in Protected Landscapes programme, which helps fund projects in the farmed landscape under the themes of climate, nature, people and place.

Our first Cross-Channel Geopark Festival

We’re excited to announce the Cross-Channel Geopark Festival, taking place from Thursday 10th to Saturday 12th October, 2024, at the stunning Château d’Hardelot in France.

This first-of-its-kind festival is a vibrant celebration of geology, culture, and community, brought together by the Kent Downs National Landscape and the Parc naturel régional des Caps et Marais d’opale.

The festival marks the official launch of the Cross-Channel Geopark, a significant step as we prepare to apply for UNESCO Global Geopark status in 2025. Festival highlights include engaging talks by renowned journalist Stephen Clarke on the Channel Tunnel and the Entente Cordiale (the historic agreement that strengthened Franco-British relations), and geographer Nick Crane celebrating the geological history that connects the UK and France.
