Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes, meeting 30 September 2024

Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 30 September 2024 at 5.30-7pm at Cleckheaton Library with Ellie, Karen, Michelle, Molly and Reuben in attendance, David and Kathy having passed on their apologies.

The minutes were passed from the previous meeting.

WIP updates: Karen has been attending several TEAMS meetings in order to set up her own business Creative Services Yorkshire which will help and support writers and creatives. She has also been promoting her debut novel Christmas Evie which is out in paperback by sharing her new 5* review, registered the novel for PLR, nudged her publisher regarding payment, been applying for jobs and has received the publishing contract for the three book deal. Michelle has written a couple of things but not brought them to the meeting. She is still waiting on a reply about her poetry from Yaffle and has applied to complete the Great North Run 2025 and a 10k race in Benidorm. Reuben has attended the first two Anna Chilvers Write as You mean to go On course workshops generating lots of ideas and has started to cut 3 characters in his WIP. Molly has written a poem based on the September theme. Ellie has started a screenplay, subbed last years screenplay to the Channel Four open call and written some sketches that she might post online.

Writing plans: Karen will be focusing on micro editing for the full MS requests she has received. Ellie will write more sketches. Molly is hoping to write a poem and perhaps a section on her planned short story. Reuben will review his current WIP timeline and what he wants in each chapter, which will help him decide which chapter to tackle as part of Anna Chilvers' course. He has also been sent 2 chapters of David's 'Pastures Old' to look at. Michelle will read more poems for inspiration.

Feedback sessions: Ellie shared her 'King' sketch and members saw it as a Pixar type animation or along the lines of Horrible Histories for her second piece The Heir and the Spare (which evoked thoughts of the royal memoir) with the surreal imagery. One member felt it reminded her of the Mighty Boosh as the Under the Sea scene had echoes, as does Monty Python. Molly shared her poem about wind The Gift which forces you to stay in the moment. Members loved the imagery, especially the white horses of the waves.

This led to a discussion about books Reuben was reading, the Art of War and the End of Policing.

Karen passed on her apologies for the next meeting and Michelle or another member offered to take the minutes in her absence.

Next meeting: Monday 14 October 2024 at 5.30pm in Cleckheaton Library. New members always welcome.
