It begins with the birth of a horrendous ruler, Diktat, who imprisons and tortures his subjects while also wreaking havoc on the environment.   As a band of unlikely heroes – talking animals, plague like winds and fortune tellers – emerge on a mission to restore balance to a wounded Earth, Diktat is pushed to breaking point... but can a shattered world heal in time?     What is the opera like?   Masque of Might is our 'juke box opera', which sees music by genius composer Henry Purcell 'recycled' into one piece. BFI Film Academy short courses Leeds and Bradford applications now open

 

 

Apply before Sunday 24 September 5pm Leeds Young Film and the BFI are training the next generation of UK filmmakers, supporting young people to develop the commercial and cultural knowledge to help break into film. No experience is necessary. Our fully accessible course includes sessions delivered by expert industry mentors, hands-on filmmaking experience and the chance to meet and collaborate with like-minded aspiring filmmakers.  If you know somebody aged 16-19 years old, who is enthusiastic about film and who wants to learn the skills, knowledge and contacts to bring their stories to life then make sure they don't miss this opportunity from the BFI and Leeds Young Film.

film & music fans came together to celebrate Cinema on the square

 

 

Our first ever Cinema on the Square took place on Sunday 30 July; a day of outdoor film screenings that celebrated cinema, music and summer. Although we didn't get the summer weather we were hoping for it it did stay dry for the majority of the day with some light showers at the end of the night which luckily didn't dampen anyone's spirits. We had a fantastic time chatting to audience members before the films and want to say a big thank you to everyone who joined us. We hope to be back next year for Cinema on the Square 2024 with a new programme of films.

 

 

Leeds YOUNG FILM VR Cinema continues to travel with Breeze in the park

 

 

Until 31 August Leeds Young Film Festival's new VR Cinema continues to travel across the city as part of Breeze in The Park, the touring summer event for families and young people.   The VR Cinema are aimed to introduce young people to the world of virtual reality and features the Emmy award-winning animated experience Invasion! which puts you in the shoes (paws?) of a cartoon rabbit who must stop two bumbling aliens from taking over the planet.  To try out these unique immersive experiences and enjoy a fun day out for your family then click below to find out where Breeze will be setting up next.

Buck and the Preacher - Scalarama 2023 Programme Launch at Hyde Park Picture House

 

 

Wednesday 23 August / Hyde Park Picture House Scalarama Leeds launches its 2023 festival programme this month in a special screening at Hyde Park Picture House. Scalarama is a DIY pop-up film festival celebrating cinema, skill sharing and community. It takes place every September, nationwide.  The launch film, Buck And The Preacher is an immensely satisfying Western which marked Sidney Poitier's directorial debut, as well as his first screen pairing with superstar Harry Belafonte. It was widely regarded at the time of its release as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with a social conscience.  Guests will also get a first look at the Scalarama 2023 film festival trailer and programme of films & events taking place across the city in September.

From Friday 8 to Sunday 10 September we will be celebrating the seascape, landscape and geology of the Kent Downs and Cross-Channel Geopark.  SALT + EARTH Festival invites you to join artists, creatives, and scientists exploring everything from geography to geology, sounds to sculptures, food to Deep Time.  For a weekend of more than 20 events and activities, from walks, talks and exhibitions, to performances, workshops and sea swims, there will be something for everyone to enjoy! SALT + EARTH is co-produced by Folkestone Fringe, Creative Folkestone, and Kent Downs AONB, in support of the Cross-Channel Geopark. SALT + EARTH explores the way the natural environments around us shape who we are, and asks what the future might hold for those living on the edge.   Check out the full festival programme!     The majority of events are free and but you'll need to book Festival artists, scientists and geologists include Alison Neighbour, Francine Hajilou, Josie and Ray Felix Carter, Marcelo Mascheta, Mel Wrigley, Nicholas Crane, Rosie Plunkett, Rubiane Maia, Sara Trillo, and the White Cliffs Countryside Partnership.   An Audience with Nicholas Crane 8th Sept, 8pm Free, booking required "To care about a place, you must know its story". Join, geographer, explorer, journalist, broadcaster and writer Nicholas Crane, for an evening in Folkestone, to celebrate the internationally significant geology of the Kent Downs and Cross-Channel Geopark. The Milky Way Project 8th to 10th Sept  Free  Having completed a week’s circular walk crossing the Kent Downs AONB, artist Marcelo Moscheta brings us a remarkable presence of a sculpture in chalk along the grasslands and cliffs of the proposed Geopark (exact location to be announced as the festival begins!).   Going Underground 8th to 10th Sept, 10am to 5pm Free exhibition See sculpted work from clay, textiles and rope by local artist, Sara Trillo, who researched dene holes and ancient chalk mines of uncertain age and purpose in the Kent Downs. Chalk Coracle II 8th to 10th Sep, 11am to 5pm Free, booking required Walk through the chalk cliffs and down through time on this audio walk by artist, Alison Neighbour. Guided, and gain a new perspective on this space where land and sea are one and the same.    Fantastic Fossil Foray 9th Sept, 1pm to 3pm Free, booking required Join White Cliffs Countryside Partnership on a walk down onto Folkestone Warren beach to search for fossil ammonites, belemnites, bivalves, and an occasional crab or tooth! Hear about the rocks, minerals and fossils and geology processes and how the Dover Straits were formed. Making Paints from Earth 10th Sept, 1pm to 4pm Free, booking required Coloured minerals and rocks have been used throughout human history to create paints. This workshop will introduce ochres, chalks and green earths and other minerals and demonstrate how these materials can be processed, prepared and transformed into paints.      Full Festival Programme     Did you know the Kent and French coasts are actually still connected by the layer of chalk which runs below the Channel? Hundreds of thousands of years ago a catastrophic flood swept away the chalk ridge that connected Dover and Calais, carving out the white cliffs of Dover and starting Britain’s history as an island.
