In Focus...

Introducing our new programme of talks 'In Focus'. This programme will explore topical issues of the day. Our first event takes a look at the caring system.

Who CaresWho Cares? A discussion with Emily Kenway: Tuesday 19 September, 6.15pm, Room 700, Leeds Central Library

Around the world, millions of people are quietly caring for long-term unwell, elderly or disabled loved ones; one-in-eight people in the UK and the US, with comparable proportions across the globe. For many, this is a full-time job, saving our economies billions each year. When author Emily Kenway found herself in the painful position of caring for her mother, she discovered that provision for people in her situation was, at best, hopelessly inadequate and, at worst, completely non-existent.

We look forward to welcoming you to Leeds Central Library where Emily will be talking with Claire Turner, CEO of Carers Leeds, about her experience and decision to write her ground-breaking memoir, described by New Statesman as "a compassionate hybrid of memoir and manifesto".

Libraries in Leeds festivalLibraries in Leeds festival

Did you know our public libraries are part of a wider network of libraries across the city, including academic, health and libraries within cultural setting such as the Royal Armouries and Henry Moore Institute?

We are celebrating this network of libraries with our first 'Libraries in Leeds' festival. The programme includes a number of interesting talks, thought-provoking discussions and ‘backstage’ experiences for everyone to enjoy, including a day of free family-friendly activities on Saturday 9 September at Leeds Central Library. If you know anyone who would benefit from this service, please encourage them to get in touch.

Smeaton300: The Art of Engineering

Lighting the Way

We’re pleased to be part of this exciting project celebrating the life and legacy of John Smeaton, the first Civil Engineer. The programme of events lead all the way up to his 300th birthday in 2024. Find out more here.

Join artist Alison McIntyre for ‘Lighting the Way’ and create a piece of mixed media artwork inspired by the idea of the lighthouse. You can then choose whether to come to a final workshop where we'll create a larger collaborative piece for Leeds Central Library’s window as part of Light Night in October. We’ll also explore our relationship to lighthouses and what they mean to us.

Workshops will take place in the following libraries: Wetherby, Beeston, Headingley and Central. Booking required. Events are funded by Leeds2023.

Heritage Open Days 9-16 September

In the local history department of Leeds Central Library there's only one thing we love more than heritage, and that’s…Heritage Open Days! This year we’re hosting several Creativity Unwrapped-themed talks and events, alongside our annual offering of FREE heritage tours of our Grade II* listed building.

Visit our Ticketsource page to browse the full programme and book tickets.

We’re particularly excited to host author and academic Jennie Batchelor for her talk Needlework, early women's magazines and Jane Austen Embroidery. We know that Jane Austen was an accomplished novelist; she was also a talented needlewoman. But where did she get her designs from? Jennie will draw on treasures from our Sanderson Collection and her nearly twenty years of tracking down presumed-lost needlework patterns from women's magazines of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Original material from the Sanderson Collection, including The Lady’s Magazine, will be available to view at the event. Funded by Leeds Civic Trust and Leeds2023.

Social media for business workshops

Throughout August, our Business and IP Centre is hosting Social Media for Business: Summer Evening Workshops. These sessions are tailored specifically for start-ups and businesses aiming to enhance their social media skills. Whether you prefer to follow the entire series or dip into relevant subjects, our workshops will provide the fundamental knowledge necessary to thrive in the digital landscape.

View the topics and secure your spot here: BIPC Eventbrite

Central Library improvements

We will be carrying out some refurbishment of our Central Library starting this autumn. To carry out these improvements, we will be closing the Music Library to the public from 21st August until early 2024. This means our music stock will be inaccessible until works are completed. You’ll still be able to access all our online resources like Medici and Naxos, or you’re welcome to stock up on items now.

Our performance sets will however continue to be available and we will let you know where to collect and drop off your orders when you book your appointment.

Please keep an eye on our social media for updates about our refurbishment work.

Autumn Holidays in Dorset

Summer might be a popular time of year, but there's still plenty of reasons to visit during Autumn!

Here's just some of the reasons you might love an Autumn holiday...

Mild weather means long walks are a great family activity, and Dorset's many woodlands provide a picturesque place to walk through the falling leaves.

Many of Dorset's beaches are dog-friendly all year round, however almost all that don't allow dogs in the Summer lift their restrictions on the 1st of October, meaning it's a great time to bring your four-legged friend on a trip to the coast.

Dorset's not just about the beaches, as there's plenty of fantastic indoor activities available at Highlands End, and in all the towns across the county, just in case the weather isn't on your side.

Outside of peak season Dorset tends to be quieter, meaning you can explore some of the county's most popular attractions and beaches without the crowds.

Events in September, October and November

Bournemouth Air Festival: 31st August - 3rd September
Bridport Hat Festival: 2nd September

School of Fish

We are also excited to bring back the FREE Children’s Cookery Workshop, designed to help children learn how to cook and enjoy fish as part of a balanced diet. This year Weymouth College will be running the workshops, kids can learn how to cook with mussels or prepare a crab and prawn dish. The college is Weymouth’s further education centre and offers a fantastic range of food, hospitality and catering courses – which makes it the perfect partner for the Festivals cookery school. Parents can also enjoy food from their Avenue Restaurant food stall.  The cookery school provides an amazing opportunity for families attending the Festival to create their own seafood dishes, whilst learning all about the fantastic seafood available in our UK waters.

Once you have booked your festival tickets, you can book your free workshop places here.
