This whisky is about as honest as you can get, and with Daftmill's output firmly sitting in the realms of "tiny", it's no wonder the distillery has earned such a devoted fanbase.

Library Adventures - 24th May 2023

Image of author Joseph Coelho standing next to Children's Laureate green banner

We were delighted when Joseph Coelho, award-winning performance poet, playwright and children’s author, was crowned the Waterstones Children’s Laureate 2022 – 2024. Joseph loves libraries and we love his work. He is a fully signed up member of Kirklees Libraries and has worked with us on library events online and in person over the years. In his acceptance speech he said,

I want to hug every library, these miraculous institutions where new horizons line the shelves, where minds go to grow.

Libraries made me a writer and make communities thrive - I wish to champion the services of these essential launchpads of learning.

Sounding Stories at Cleckheaton Library

Book cover of Joseph Coelho's Zombierella and image of Kirklees Mayor at Cleckheaton Library with class of children

This week saw the launch of the Sounding Stories: Bringing books to life project, a great collaboration between Kirklees Libraries and hcmf - Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival.

Children from Whitechapel C of E Primary School created a soundscape, a story in sound, based on a book as part of the Kirklees Year of Music 2023 activities.

Children Laureate Joseph Coelho’s Zombierella was the inspiration and children picked up new digital and creative skills whilst recording the soundscape. The aim of the project is to inspire children to read for pleasure and become lifelong library users.

The Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Masood Ahmed, praised the children's work and talked about his experience of reading in childhood at the launch.

The soundscape created as a result of this project is on display at Cleckheaton Library until 15 June.

Arts Trail
Last call for your Homegrown submissions

Open Space 70 features a weekend Arts Trail (Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 July from 10am to 5pm) that offers the opportunity to explore installations, happenings and creative works exhibited in unconventional ‘opened up’ spaces in the Upper Calder Valley. These include people's homes, studios, gardens, garages, as well as museums, community spaces and allotments. Full details of the Arts Trail works and spaces will be shared in late June.

The Arts Trail will share the work made in Creative Workshop or Courses, the Allotment Arts project and by our nine Engaging Neighbourhoods groups – plus work made by YOU!

You have until Wednesday 31 May to submit your own creative work to be part of the Arts Trail. Share something you’ve created on the theme of environment / climate emergency: show your body of art work / photography, your sculptures or create an installation; share your eco-garden, mudlarking collection or your manifesto for change. Use your own space to share your work, or we'll find a venue for you to use.
 Complete your Homegrown submission here

For those who would like to submit one chosen piece of their artwork, please consider the Open Exhibition route.

Tickets are priced from free (Allotment Arts, Generation Hope Zine Making Project and the Time Out digital adventure cycling day – happening in half term) to pay what you can ARK workshops (this Saturday and on 11 June) to subsidised prices for other sessions.

We have a generous concessions policy for anyone on means tested benefits, students, sanctuary seekers and those under 18, with an average 30% discount off full price.
