|
|
|
Performed as a 12 track album, The Gods The Gods
The Gods is an exhilarating weave of big beats, heavy basslines,
soaring melodies and heart-stopping spoken word
The 65-minute show weaves together 4 stories: Two kids meet out
dancing, they’re set to fall hard; A woman is on a beach, alone at
night, looking at the stars; A bloke is on a bridge, thinking about
jumping, just before dark. It’s a show about what we continually
look for outside of ourselves, and what we might find in those
people who surround us.
The Gods The Gods The Gods is the third show in the internationally
acclaimed series of Myths from the two ‘masters of storytelling’
(Fourth Wall) Wright&Grainger. Following their multi-award
winning tellings of Orpheus and Eurydice, Wright&Grainger call
us to the crossroads where mythology meets real life.

jazz greats, including Count Basie, Mary Lou Williams, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Hank Jones, Gene Krupa, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver and many more.
|
|
|
The show takes its
inspiration from Harlem '58, a now-legendary black-and-white
photograph of 57 jazz musicians in Harlem, New
York, taken by freelance photographer Art
Kane for Esquire magazine
on August 12, 1958.
Starting with Count Basie, the
iconic big band leader, each musician links to the next as
members of Strictly Smokin’ tell their stories, drawing tales
from the exciting world of the New York jazz scene and bringing
their relationships to life through live performances.
|
|
|
With rare video
footage from the photo day itself alongside archive material from
the musicians' lives, Harlem '58 is the perfect blend of
musical concert, theatrical storytelling, and documentary theatre
all rolled into one production.
|
|
|

magic of jazz history coming to life with Harlem '58. Join

What's coming up
at
Theatre Royal Wakefield
|
|
|
|
|
Written by Roy Williams
Two best mates, Leon and Troy, have spent their youth
growing up in a boxing gym, figuring out a place in the world, vying
for the approval of Charlie, their trainer.
Soon Leon and Becky, Charlie’s daughter, are trying to
keep a big secret in a ruthless world. But there can only be one
winner, and it’s time everyone stepped into the ring to face up to who
they really are…
This tender, bruising and funny play by leading British
dramatist Roy Williams, brilliantly explores being young and black in
the 80s. Winning the Alfred Fagon Award, The Writers Guild Award for
Best Play and nominated for an Olivier for Best New Play, it first
opened in a sell-out production at London’s Royal Court.
A regional premiere of thrillingly staged event theatre,
from an exciting partnership of theatres, touring nationally.
