We're ready to welcome you this month for two special live screenings on our newly-installed Leeds Big Screen. We'll be showing live coverage of the Coronation of His Majesty the King this Saturday 6 May before hosting one of the BBC official Fanzones for the Eurovision Song Contest on Tuesday 9, Thursday 11 and Saturday 13 May. Plus, read on to find out more about the latest announcements for our Summer Series concert programme as well as some exciting news from our friends at Light Night Leeds and Leeds International Concert Season

Coronation live screening

Saturday 6 May 

 

Live coverage of the procession and ceremony of the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort will be shown on the Leeds Big Screen in Millennium Square this Saturday 6 May from 10.15am until 3pm. Some limited seating options will be provided for those wishing to attend on a first-come first-served basis.

 

Eurovision 2023 Fanzone

Tues 9 - Sat 13 May

 

 

Millennium Square will become a Eurovision live site on Saturday 13 May 2023 to broadcast the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 on our giant screen. The fanzone will include live performances from 4.30pm in collaboration with Leeds Pride featuring 2019 British Pop artist Michael Rice, UK’s leading ABBA tribute bands Planet Abba, multi-award-winning drag queen St Sordid Secret and 2010 Drag Idol Leeds winner Cherry Pops

All tickets are issued on a ‘Pay As You Feel’ basis, with all funds raised (minus processing fees) donated to Leeds City Council’s Leeds Together For Ukraine appeal. The event space will include various seating options, provided on a first-come, first-served basis, as well as a licensed bar and hot food & drink concessions.

Light Night Leeds 2023 dates announced

 

Our friends at Light Night Leeds have announced that this year's arts and light festival will be taking place on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 October 2023. For the past 18 years, some of Leeds’s most recognisable indoor and outdoor spaces, including the iconic Leeds Civic Hall at Millennium Square, have been transformed by spectacular artworks and captivating performances by local, national and international artists. We can't wait to see what's in store for 2023!

Your weekly dose of music al fresco is here! Summer Bands in Leeds Park is back until the end of September with performances from local brass, jazz and concert bands that bring the city's parks alive with music. With 110 concerts across 32 parks to choose from, there's sure to be a concert taking place in a green space near you this summer.

Solem Quartet

Solem Quartet presents music by 20th-century Dutch composer Henriëtte Bosmans, musical highlights from the 2007 film There Will Be Blood by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, and American minimalist Steve Reich's Different Trains - a piece that fuses together recordings of trains, sirens, bells, spoken voices and four fierce string players.

The second concert of the Leonkoro Quartet's residency opens with the early Divertimento KV 138 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, followed by Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet Op 33 No 3, sometimes nicknamed The Bird. Dmitri Shostakovich’s incredibly powerful String Quartet No 3 Op 73 closes the evening.

Leeds Baroque Choir & Leeds Baroque Consort perform music for the Restoration Chapel Royal, with soloists Francis Gush alto & Stuart O’Hara bass

Peter Holman and Bryan White direct a concert to transport you back to the long-lost Chapel Royal in the Tudor palace of Whitehall, with scores of musicians and the royal family high up in a gallery and the choir down below. The programme features music favoured and composed for monarchs, including Purcell’s I was glad composed for James II and Henry Lawes’ Zadok the Priest composed for Charles II, to mark the coronation of King Charles III.

Celebrate the Coronation

This weekend marks the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort. Pick up one of our Coronation postcards from your local library to share your hopes and aspirations for the new reign and be part of history. 

You can also make your own seed bomb inspired by The King's love of nature. Your seed bomb will grow into a welcoming habitat for pollinators and bring a joyful splash of colour to your local area.

It's playtime!

Colourful boxes full of fun have been rolled out in libraries as part of of a project to mark the Coronation of King Charles III. Free to use and with no play time limit, these small but mighty boxes contain all sorts of goodies for under 5s and their grown-ups to explore through play. 

Developed by Leeds Libraries in partnership with Playful Anywhere and Play Explore Art, the mini playboxes will be brightening up 14 libraries in areas around Yorkshire and Humber after a successful pilot in eight libraries in Leeds. Visit Leeds Central Library to start your play adventure!

The exhibition looks at the lives of Jamaican WWII veterans of Leeds and includes rare photographs, keepsakes and memories gathered over the years by the families of those who, pre-Windrush, formed the beginnings of the city’s Black community.

Leeds artists and creatives are invited to pitch ideas for short-form film projects for broadcast on Sky Arts, as part of the LEEDS 2023 Year of Culture.

Five artists or artist-led organisations will be commissioned and mentored to create new, short films for Sky Arts through a unique partnership between the broadcaster, LEEDS 2023Studio12 and The Space in association with Arts Council England.
