Amid reports of burnout among staff in the publishing industry, our friends at The Literary Consultancy (TLC) are running their first Being a Writer Festival this month –

Top tips for writing a book review

 

 

Writing a critical review takes sensitivity and wisdom.

Write well and feel well with TLC's Being a Writer Festival

 

 

TLC's first Being A Writer Festival is all about writing and feeling well, with speakers from across the publishing and wellbeing industries. The five-week festival kicks off on Monday 20 June with a keynote from writer and activist Nikesh Shukla on How to Be a Writer. The festival is for anyone who wants to develop their writing craft. Time to apply for the SYP's mentorship scheme

 

 

Applications are open for the SYP's annual mentorship scheme – a chance to develop your career with personalised career guidance from publishing experts.

 

The scheme offers two strands: Into for those seeking their first permanent role in the industry and Ahead for those who work within the industry and want advice on taking the next step.

The SYP UK branch will also run a Launch strand, for those wanting to freelance, start their own company, or progress in the publishing industry in a different way from traditional in-house options.

Publishing facing industry-wide burnout, The Bookseller survey finds

 

 

A recent survey from The Bookseller has revealed that 89% of respondents have experienced stress and 69% burnout over the last year. A poor work-life balance and unsustainable workloads among staff have impacted on mental health, the study finds, with working from home promoting a culture of longer working hours. Please note this is subscriber content.

 

 

Get ready for the Summer Reading Challenge

 

 

The Reading Agency's Summer Reading Challenge begins on 25 June (Scotland and Northern Ireland) and 9 July in England and Wales.

 

This year's theme, Gadgeteers, has been created in partnership with the Science Museum Group. It aims to encourage 4–11 year-olds to enjoy the benefits of reading and spark their curiosity about the world around them.

Hone your grammar skills

 

Build and reinforce your understanding of grammar and punctuation with Essential Grammar. Celebrating the latest book prizes  and shortlists!

 

 

Congratulations to....

International Booker Prize-winner 2022 Tomb of Sand, written by Geetanjali Shree and translated by Daisy Rockwell. It's the first book originally written in any Indian language to win this coveted prize. Set in northern India, the novel "follows the adventures of an 80-year-old woman who unexpectedly gains a new, and highly unconventional, lease of life".

From You Are a Champion (Overall Book of the Year Winner), by co-authors Marcus Rashford and Carl Anka, to Publisher of the Year, Simon & Schuster, check out all the Book of the Year and Book Trade Award Winners here (subscriber content).


... the shortlisted authors for the Crime Writers' Association Dagger Awards, honouring the best in the crime-writing genre. Who will win the Gold Dagger? Winners announced on 29 June.

... the Book Marketing Society Q1 2022 Award-winners, praised for their 'perfectly executed', 'attention-grabbing' and successful marketing campaigns. See the full list with judges' comments here.

 

 

Also in the news......

 

Book Aid International has shipped over 10,000 publisher-donated books to The Universal Reading Foundation in Poland, to offer support to Ukrainian children who have fled the conflict. Read more.

Global publisher Dorling Kindersley has entered the education market with the launch of DK Learning, a platform offering books and resources for teachers and parents of early years to secondary school children. Read more.

Research from The Reading Agency shows that a quarter of UK adults started reading more during lockdowns. And this trend has continued, despite the easing of Covid-19 restrictions. Find out how staying at home has revived our interest in reading.

IPA Academy launches to educate publishers worldwide

 

 

The IPA Academy launched on 7 March with three global training institutions, including the PTC. The Academy aims to help publishers worldwide upskill in the face of commercial changes brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic. Find out more.

 

"We are delighted to be working with the IPA Academy on their launch and adding to the courses offered to their members", said Petra Green, Head of the PTC. "As publishing changes so fast, it’s essential for people to keep up to date with the latest developments and training is a great way to do this. As a charity, the PTC is committed to improving access and education for all."

 

The global pandemic has driven a rapid adoption of digital technologies, yet the skills gap in publishing worldwide goes beyond digital expertise.

Ten top tips for freelance success

 

 

Each month hundreds of people leave the security of their job and take the plunge to go freelance. So what advice would a seasoned freelancer give to the uninitiated?

In early 2019, after many years working in-house for a variety of publishing companies, Petra Green became a freelance consultant and Head of the PTC. Read her top tips for freelance success in publishing and get your business off to the best start.

 

 

Discover the Secret Life of Books, with Pan Macmillan

 

 

Are you a bookseller wanting to know more about the publishing industry? If so, why not join Pan Macmillan's Publishing Mentorship Programme, Discover the Secret Life of Books?

 

Taking place remotely, you will spend only one to two hours of your time each week attending meetings, having 1:1 catch ups with your in-house buddy, and making contacts within Pan Macmillan. At the end of the mentorship, you will have an insight into the trade publishing process from acquisition through to delivery to bookshops and beyond.

Time to apply for the Rising Star Awards 2022

 

 

Boost your career with the Printing Charity's Rising Star Awards, the largest awards programme recognising the best young talent in our industry.

A Rising Star is someone with great potential who knows exactly what they need to advance in their chosen field. Winners receive funding of up to £1,500 towards the training they have chosen to help them on their journey. To be named a 2022 Rising Star, you must:

  • be working in the print, paper, publishing or packaging sectors
  • be aged 18–30
  • know what you need to advance your career

Ready to progress in your career, or know someone who is? Complete and return the application form before 3 May 2022.

 

 

Book Aid for Ukraine auction raises over £70k!

 

 

The Book Aid for Ukraine auction raised over £70,000 for the British-Ukrainian Charity, to help with humanitarian aid for Ukrainians affected by the war. Over 350 exclusive items were donated by the publishing community, from book bundles and signed copies, to author lunches, mentoring sessions and much more. The PTC was delighted to donate two items that raised over £200. See all items and winning bids, from £12 to £3,042.

 

 

NEW! Getting to Grips with Grammar and Punctuation

 

This half-day course, running on 25 May with grammar guru Andrew Steeds, explores the key issues around grammar and punctuation. You'll gain an understanding of the divergent views that people have on this contentious subject, and the confidence to justify your editorial decisions – based on the type of text you are working on and your intended readers.

This years Women's Prize for Fiction longlist was announced in March, comprising 16 "incredible books, featuring both debut and acclaimed writers" from around the globe. The shortlist will be announced on 27 April. 

The hugely popular and influential Blue Peter Book Awards recognise and celebrate the best authors, most creative illustrators and greatest reads for children. Congratulations to this year's winners: The Last Bear, for winning best story, and Invented by Animals, for best book with facts.

Deliveroo is partnering with W H Smith to expand its takeway service into books, and more, including revision guides, exam-practice workbooks and bestsellers. A trial launched last week in Reading and will shortly roll out to more south-east locations. Read more via The Bookseller (subscriber content).

IPG's Spring Conference

Welcome to our February newsletter, the first of 2022.

The Chinese New Year is in full swing, celebrating the Year of the Tiger. Apparently, the tiger represents courageous and active people who love a good challenge and adventure in life – which we think sums up the world of publishing perfectly!


Around 200 applications were received for our proofreading traineeship scheme in partnership with Pan Macmillan and Creative Access. Eight successful applicants from backgrounds traditionally under-represented in publishing will receive free industry-recognised training to work as a freelance proofreader.

Join a writing group and become a better writer

 

 

Writing is a solitary activity, but it doesn't have to be something you do on your own. Finding a good writing group, one that is right for you, is the best thing you can do for your writing career.

Lisa Goll, Founder and Director of the London Writers' Centre, shares her top tips for finding your perfect writing group.

 

 

UK book sales in 2021 hit the highest in a decade

 

 

Over 212 million books were sold in the UK in 2021, a 5% increase on the previous year, and the highest for a decade, despite bookshops being closed for three months at the start of the year. Readers seeking comfort, laughter, and escapism during lockdown drove an increased appetite for crime, fantasy, romance, sci-fi and personal development titles.

World Book Day to celebrate 25th anniversary

 

 

World Book Day is celebrating 25 years of 'changing lives through a love of books and shared reading'. This year's theme, 'You are a reader', aims to encourage children to love reading.

Working with schools nationwide, 15 million free £1 book tokens (€1.50 in Ireland) will be distributed to children and young people to claim one of 12 exclusive free titles
, in participating booksellers, from 17 February to 27 March 2022.

Recognising achievements with IPG's Awards 2022

 

 

IPG's annual Independent Publishing Awards 'honour the success and creativity of the UK's publishing sector'. With 13 categories to apply for, it's a great opportunity to reflect on and celebrate your achievements and future goals within independent publishing.

 

Applications are free and open to IPG members in the UK and Ireland. Find out more and apply by 25 February 2022.

 

 

The latest book awards and prizes

 

 

The tenth British Academy Book Prize for Global Cultural Understanding is open for nominations until 31 March 2022.

The £25,000 Prize is awarded annually for a non-fiction book, in humanities and social sciences, that has 'made an outstanding contribution to global cultural understanding for a wider public audience'.

Judges will shortlist up to six books with the winner to be announced in October 2022.

 

 

Congratulations to Hannah Lowe for winning The Costa Book of the Year 2021 with The Kids, a book of sonnets about teaching, learning, growing up and parenthood. Inspired by her 10 years teaching in an inner-city school, and coming of age in the 1980s/90s, it includes poems about her young son discovering contemporary London. Read more.

The British Book Awards

At this year's London Book Fair, publishing experts Hermione Ireland, managing director of Académie du Vin Library, and Suzanne Collier, founder of bookcareers.com, ran a bespoke session on what to consider when developing your career.

The recent IPG's hybrid autumn conference was a happy reminder that publishing is first and foremost a people business. From climate change to current challenges, discover the key conference takeouts and important issues in independent publishing today.

Our friends at ALPSP have launched a new careers hub, providing essential introductions to a range of topics across scholarly publishing. Content is currently free, but will soon become a member-only resource.

The latest book awards

 

 

Paul McCartney's The Lyrics is announced as Waterstones Book of the Year 2021, with the "breathtaking" children's novel Julia and the Shark winning Children's Gift of the Year 2021. 

The winners of the 2021 Irish Book Awards were revealed, with six titles competing for the Irish Book of the Year, to be announced on 8 December. Vote for your favourite and you could win €100 of National Book Tokens.


Usborne's Why Do Things Die? is the overall winner of the School Library Association's 2021 Information Book Awards. The Awards emphasise the importance of non-fiction by highlighting and celebrating the high standard of children’s information books available.

 

Finally, the Costa Book Awards category shortlists have been announced, with 20 "outstanding" books to read and recommend. Winners will be unveiled on 4 January and the overall winner on 1 February with a £30,000 prize up for grabs.

The rise of the audiobook
The Publishers Association reveals that audiobook sales soared by 71% for the first half of 2020, compared to the same period in 2021. Sales of e-books and print rose by 10% and 6% respectively over the same period.

Reading has become increasingly popular since the pandemic, but what are we buying? Is the book on your Christmas list in stock? On Radio 4's Today programme, James Daunt, head of Waterstones, answers these questions and explains how book sales are faring in the run-up to Christmas (c.3-minute listen, from 1:19:38s to 1:22:58s).
