Spark Writers Groups
|
|
Public booking for our Spark Young Writers groups is
now open!
We are now taking bookings for the Spark Young Writers
programme from September 2022 onwards.
We are delighted to be offering 14 in-person groups as
well as 2 online groups:
·
7 for junior aged children
·
7 for secondary/high school children or teens
·
2 online-only groups: for junior and teen writers
We are meeting in some familiar locations, and some
new. You can search for the right group for your child according to
age, location and time of day here.
As in previous years, we are offering 10 sessions
per group over the course of the year, with the expectation that
young people will sign up to one group and build relationships with
the other writers in their groups.
We are also offering taster sessions again for
those who want to try before signing up for the whole
year. Choose “try this session” when booking if this is what
you'd like to do.

Sparks
Anthology Call-Out
|
|
Spark Writers, we are now calling for submissions to
our 2022 Anthology!
Unlike the Magazine, if you follow our guidelines, all
anthology submissions will be accepted. The only requirement for
submitting is that you have attended at least one Sparks writing
group session this academic year.
Secondly, we are setting an upper word limit of 500
words per piece. You can submit two pieces of prose, or
up to three poems (with a total line limit of 70).
They all need a title and need to be complete works, not extracts
of larger pieces.
The book will be published in September 2022 and will
be available to buy on Amazon as a paperback and e-book at a very
low cost.
Deadline for submission:
6pm, 18th July 2022

National
Writers' Conference 2022
|
|
Our National Writers Conference on Saturday 9th
July 2022 is back! While not designed specifically for
young writers, much of the content is aimed at writers at the start
of their careers and so will be suitable for young people
aged 14+ with an interest in developing as a writer or
would like to work in the literature industry. Full details about
the conference can be found here,
including the booking link.
Ticket information
Young writers qualify for the concessionary rate,
costing £45 excluding lunch, £55 with lunch included. If your young
writer qualifies for free school meals, or pupil premium funding,
please get in touch and
we will be able to offer a free bursary place.
If you want to attend with your young writer,
please get in touch;
alternatively, there is seating in the foyer of the Bramall Music
Building where parents who want to accompany but not attend the
Conference itself could sit in some comfort. The University Library
also has a café, which will be open during the day until 5pm.
The Spark Young Writers team will be present on the
day. The reception area will act as a base should your young writer
need anything. Many of our lead and assistant writers, past and
present, will also be in attendance so there will be plenty of
friendly faces around.
How to get there
To find the Bramall Music Building (R12 on the map),
head for Chancellor’s Court which is also where the very tall clock
tower is, which is visible from all over the campus. Parking on the
University Campus is free at weekends. The University of Birmingham
is also served by a train station which is a couple of stops away
from New Street Train Station.
Cost: From £40 - if you are
under 18, or booking for an under 18, please contact Emma and
we'll make the reservation for you.
