I hope street parties and community and family gatherings brought a sense of togetherness and occasion as we celebrated the long reign of HM Her Majesty the Queen. How long that feeling lasts is another matter. I encountered my own real-life scene from Jez Butterworth’s play Jerusalem recently, when one well-to-do country neighbour (with clipped trees and gravelled track) clashed with a longstanding local (with old caravan and tin bath for his horses’ water). One wanted him to tidy up this ‘beautiful area’ or ‘there’ll be consequences’; the other told him where to stuff it.
