Good morning. I hope you’re all nursing Pimm’s
hangovers and strawberry
stomach aches. I hope street parties and community and family gatherings
brought a sense of togetherness and occasion as we celebrated the long
reign of HM Her Majesty the Queen. How long that feeling lasts is another
matter. I encountered my own real-life scene from Jez
Butterworth’s play Jerusalem recently, when one well-to-do
country neighbour (with clipped trees and gravelled track) clashed with a
longstanding local (with old caravan and tin bath for his horses’ water).
One wanted him to tidy up this ‘beautiful area’ or ‘there’ll be
consequences’; the other told him where to stuff it. While one wants to
believe the countryside is always an idyll, it is often here that the
disparities between different classes are at their most heightened.
Have a great week.

WORLD
OCEANS DAY
If you’re into environmental action (and surely, who isn’t?), mark in your
diary this really important day that focuses our minds on our depleted
oceans. There’s a huge
amount online including a talk from Silvia Earle, but for those
who prefer actions to words, get your litter picker and head to your
nearest beach. (Getty Images)
