Got plans for this weekend? Here are a few ideas of things to do for those of my followers who live in, near to, virtually, or are visiting Leeds, Bradford, Huddersfield and New York:
50 black-run
businesses in Leeds & tell us what you're missing most in lockdown...

On Monday, lockdown measures were eased
and the shops started reopening. Not everyone is back, but these 17
independents have flung open their doors to welcome us home with special
safety measures in place to keep the virus at bay. Find out who's back
and why you need to visit.

We've teamed up with LeedsBID to find
out what you miss the most about Leeds during lockdown. Is it shopping?
Is it eating out with friends? Is it going out on the town? Tell us what
you've missed the most and why in this quick survey.

Missing those indulgent afternoon teas?
You're in luck because the city's cafes have come through with a
delectable feast delivered to your door. Put the kettle on and dig into
these scrumptious mid-afternoon treats.
|
|
You told us you wanted to support the
black community – we do too, so we’ve created a list of black-owned
businesses. Each and every one of them has been recommended by our
readers, so you know they're going to be good.

|
|
|
If lockdown has made you long for a bike
ride, make a beeline for these shops. They're all open, they're all
well-stocked and they're all ready to help, so whether you want a
new bike or a repair service, you're all set.

Long sunny days just aren't the same
without a beer garden, but in the absence of the pub, your home-bar
will inevitably become your go-to. Stock it up with beer, wine and
cocktails from the city's finest establishments.

Known for roles in award winning shows such as Our Friends in the North
and Dr Who
alongside films like 28
Days Later and Gone
in 60 Seconds, Christopher Eccleston is one of the UK's
best loved stars of stage and screen.
Lemn Sissay MBE is a BAFTA nominated International prize winning
author, poet and playwright. Roles such as the official poet of the
London 2012 Olympics have solidified Sissay as one of Britains most
recognisable poetic voices.
Both Eccleston and Sissay were born and raised in working class
households in the North of England in the 1960's. Eccleston's
autobiography I
Love the Bones of You and Sissay's My Name Is Why were both
published to critical acclaim in 2019. Here we present a unique
insight into the lives and experiences of two of our most loved and
respected Northern artists, both of whom have overcome great
hardship, and are with us today to tell their stories.

Ilhan Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional
District in the U.S. House of Representatives. The first
Somali-American Member of Congress, the first woman of colour to
represent Minnesota, and one of the first two Muslim-American women
elected to Congress. Born in Mogadishu, Omar and her
family fled war-torn Somalia and spent four years in a Kenyan
refugee camp before securing asylum in the U.S. and
arriving in New York in 1995.
In this unique conversation with rapper and activist Lowkey, Omar
will discuss her own incredible story and how the challenges,
trauma and fear she has faced have shaped her political life.
Join Omar and Lowkey as they explore American
idealism and identity, liberation movements and advocating for the
rights of the people, and why Omar’s presence in US politics
commands confrontation from the establishment, despite
which, Omar continues to believe in the potential for change
within the US political system.

"Hello there, Nigel here.
I am overjoyed to be adapting the stage
version of my book, Toast into an online play after its run in the
West End and national tour.
When I first sat down to write the book, I never imaged
it would have the impact on people in the way it has, and I couldn’t
be happier to now see it broadcast across the globe.
Toast is my story – the story of a little boy, and about
the tastes and smells that he grew up with.
The spirit of the book is wonderfully captured by Henry
Filloux-Bennett, who wrote the play as well as being the Chief
Executive & Artistic Director of the Lawrence Batley Theatre.
Director, Jonnie Riordan has done an incredible job of translating
all of those special moments from the much-loved stage show, to the
screen – all in all it’s a really joyful digital version of
Toast.
I hope you can join us this July."

The online play of Nigel Slater's
'Toast' is screening from the 1 - 13 July. Make more of your
evening by booking a ticket with Walnut Whips and a programme so
you can turn your front room into a night at the theatre.

Still Reopening
Xi’an
Famous Foods has satisfied plenty of foodies, with accessibility from
numerous boroughs and with locations in many of the boroughs. Now, due to
losses from the months of shutdown in NYC, they might not be able to keep
their beloved locations open.
Although the
future of their restaurants is currently in question, they are selling their
noodle kit and dumplings online.
