Three Cheers for Porter Square
Porter Square Books is PW's Bookstore of the Year this
year, and in our latest issue, we highlighted
just why it's so special. In Italy, book sales
took a huge hit in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak. And the
Amazon Literary Partnership grant recipients for 2020 have been
announced. PW editorial director Jim Milliot joined All
Things Considered last night to discuss how the
pandemic is affecting publishing. In New York City, the public
library systems are discussing
whether to open up a grab-and-go pickup service, the City
reports. And Joyce Carol Oates has won France's
€200,000 Cino del Luca World Prize.

week in a digital version, and PW will be keeping you

A New Page for the RWA?
The Romance Writers of America had a tough winter filled with
controversy around diversity, and as a result, its RITA Awards ceremony this
year was canceled long before the coronavirus reared its head. But the RWA
has now announced that it will retire the
awards permanently and replace them with a new award, the Vivian,
named after RWA founder Vivian Stephens. In big book news, Bill Clinton and
James Patterson are back, with a new
standalone novel due next summer. In Canada, bookstores are
reopening in a challenging environment. In San Francisco, Zyzzyva,
which SF Weekly calls the city's "crown jewel literary
journal," turns 35 this
year. The Guardian notes that this year's Orwell prize for
fiction shortlist may give readers
flashbacks to the 2019 Booker prize. And the Croatian author Masa
Kolanovic has won the EU
Prize for Literature.
RWA Retires RITA Awards, Debuts the 'Vivian' After

Everything Is Dystopian Enough, Thanks
As our own world grows more dystopian by the day, editors across
the industry are shying away
from acquiring dystopian fiction. At Simon & Schuster and in
the book business more broadly, Carolyn Reidy leaves behind

Seattle’s Bop Street Records. And literary agent Frances Goldin has died at 95.
