Three Cheers for Porter Square
Porter Square Books is PW's Bookstore of the Year this year, and in our latest issue, we highlighted just why it's so special. In Italy, book sales took a huge hit in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak. And the Amazon Literary Partnership grant recipients for 2020 have been announced. PW editorial director Jim Milliot joined All Things Considered last night to discuss how the pandemic is affecting publishing. In New York City, the public library systems are discussing whether to open up a grab-and-go pickup service, the City reports. And Joyce Carol Oates has won France's €200,000 Cino del Luca World Prize.

BookExpo Is Back...Online
BookExpo is back this week in a digital version, and PW will be keeping you updated on all the happenings throughout the week. In children's news, J.K. Rowling has released the first serialization of a new story, a fairy tale she wrote a decade ago for her children. And commission reps discuss the ups and downs they foresee in their future. Former vice president and current presidential candidate Joe Biden has called for Amazon to start paying taxes, CNBC reports, while in France, billionaires are working to keep publisher Lagardère out of the hands of a London-based hedge fund. And a New York Times feature takes a deep dive into copyright and authorship in the world of wolf-kink erotic fiction.

A New Page for the RWA?
The Romance Writers of America had a tough winter filled with controversy around diversity, and as a result, its RITA Awards ceremony this year was canceled long before the coronavirus reared its head. But the RWA has now announced that it will retire the awards permanently and replace them with a new award, the Vivian, named after RWA founder Vivian Stephens. In big book news, Bill Clinton and James Patterson are back, with a new standalone novel due next summer. In Canada, bookstores are reopening in a challenging environment. In San Francisco, Zyzzyva, which SF Weekly calls the city's "crown jewel literary journal," turns 35 this year. The Guardian notes that this year's Orwell prize for fiction shortlist may give readers flashbacks to the 2019 Booker prize. And the Croatian author Masa Kolanovic has won the EU Prize for Literature.

'The Stringbags' Soars

A biplane torpedo bomber in an age of monoplanes, the Swordfish was underpowered and outgunned; an obsolete museum piece, an embarrassment. Its crews fully expected to be shot from the skies. Print Sales Finally Dip
After two weeks of unexpected surges in sales, print unit sales finally fell last week, despite performing better than the comparable week in 2019. At Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, a restructuring will split the division into two publishing entities. In Zimbabwe, a book sharing network dedicated to promoting reading and literacy in the country, which was put in place by readers of the Christian Science Monitor, is now focused on sending information about the pandemic, while in France, Amazon is reopening its warehouses after a Covid-19 labor dispute. And Charles W. Dorsey, the retired book publishing executive, has died at 83.

Bracing for the Fall
Bloomsbury reported a 10% rise in profits in its last fiscal year but is preparing itself for continued disruption to its business due to the pandemic, even as it predicts that increased demand in its digital segment will help soften the blow. In France, publishers expect big revenue declines through the rest of the year. And Macmillan is the latest Big Five publisher to launch Covid-19 assistance program for indie bookstores. Hobby Lobby's Museum of the Bible has forfeited an ancient Gilgamesh tablet from its collection, NBC reports, while at Autostraddle, a new piece examines changes to trans representation in YA fiction. Mel Magazine rounds up three books of the slow apocalypse relevant to the current times. And Thomas Low, the cofounder and CEO of multicultural children's publishing house Lee & Low Books, has died at 78.

Publishers Took a Covid-19 Hit In March
The pandemic's effect on publishers in March was palpable, with sales falling 8.4% in the month. The news comes as bookstores continue to cautiously open nationwide. At Astra Publishing House, a swath of new hires sees Ben Schrank take over as publisher and COO, with New York Times books alum Maria Russo named editorial director of the imprint mineditionUS. Shakespeare's Globe theater may close permanently due to the Covid-19 lockdown, reports CNN. And Waterstones, according to the Guardian, plans to put its books under a 72-hour quarantine before selling them to customers.

Everything Is Dystopian Enough, Thanks
As our own world grows more dystopian by the day, editors across the industry are shying away from acquiring dystopian fiction. At Simon & Schuster and in the book business more broadly, Carolyn Reidy leaves behind a rich legacy. At Hachette Book Group, a new assistance program aims to aid independent bookstores. The New York Times takes a look at how publishers are snapping up coronavirus books, while the Washington Post has launched a virtual literary event calendar. The Internet Archive has bought Seattle’s Bop Street Records. And literary agent Frances Goldin has died at 95.

The Other Shoe Drops
Book sales may be holding strong overall, but that's not at all the case at brick-and-mortar bookstores, where sales dropped a whopping 33.4% in March as physical retailers across the country took a hit. In the U.K., the wholesaler Bertram Group is up for sale. Red Wheel Weiser has launched a Buddhist-inspired nonfiction imprint, Dharma Spring. And independent booksellers across the country are planning digital celebrations for the new Hunger Games book. At the Guardian, a new piece details how Francophone African authors are fighting for publishing independence from French imprints. The New York Times also turns its eye to African literature with a feature on Afrolit Sans Frontieres, a digital African literary festival. Entertainment Weekly brings together four major LGBTQ authors for a conversation on the rise of queer literature. And YouTube has put together a video featuring bestselling authors sharing what they're reading during quarantine.
