Bookstore sales plunged 65.3% in April compared to April 2019, tumbling to $219 million. April is expected to be the worst month for bricks-and-mortar stores, with advance sales for May released by the U.S. Census Bureau showing improvement in total retail sales for the month. more

A handful of members of the National Book Critics Circle's board of directors have resigned following the publication of an internal email sent by one of its members, former NBCC president Carlin Romano. The email was sent in response to the board's efforts to draft a statement in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and pledging to support writers and critics of color. more

The ABA's Virtual Town Hall held Thursday addressed a wide range of topics, from the shift to online bookselling to racism to marketing activities, all with one thing in mind: the need to keep bookstores in business. more

On June 8, more than 1,100 workers across book and media industries took a day off from work to protest the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and "the many other Black lives lost to racist violence in America." more

An attorney representing Dawn Frederick of Red Sofa Literary threatened two agents and an author with legal action unless they retract tweets casting aspersions upon Frederick and desist from further tweets. The three refused to do so, stating that this dispute reflects the state of the publishing industry. more
