Here are a few ideas of things to do this weekend in Leeds, Scotland and New York:
Where
to go fishing, takeaways you need to try & the city's DJs come to
you...
|
|
|
|
|
|
That's right –
takeaway tapas! From patatas bravas to slow-roasted belly pork
and chorizo al vino, these oh-so-scrumptious small plates are now
available to eat in the comfort of your own home, so you can get your
lockdown tapas fix whenever you need it.
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Ever wanted to go
fishing? There's no time like the present! First you need a licence, then
you need to hunt out the best fishing spots in the city – but guess what?
We did that bit for you, so here's where to cast your line.
|
|
|
Almighty burgers
stuffed with Tuscan sausages and homemade pesto. Fall-off-the-bone lamb
keema on a bed of minted peas. A juicy beef Wellington served with
all the trimmings. It's time to up your takeaway game!
|
|
The weird, the
wonderful and the outright odd tales of the city's history come together
in this mind-boggling list. From the clock that never strikes midnight to
the skulls that mysteriously disappeared, this is a wildly wacky
look back in time.

Enjoy
music inspired by nature
|
|
|
|
|
The music we hear is
often inspired by nature.
Today
is World Environment
Day and we invite you to
explore how the natural world has been
depicted through music, from epic
operas to soothing lullabies...
Janáček’s tragic opera Katya Kabanova
takes place in an isolated Russian
town, on the banks of the Volga river.
Harnessing the power of a large
orchestra to paint overwhelming effects
in nature, from glistening
water to a violent storm, Janáček
wrote that when he was composing the
opera ‘the work flowed from my pen just
like the beautiful river Volga'.
Watch the elemental power of nature
depicted by the Orchestra of Opera
North as they rehearse the dramatic
opening from our 2019 production…
|
Listen
to the swell of the sea in Britten's
native Suffolk in this excerpt of 'Dawn'
from The Sea Interludes.
Elaborately
scored for an impressively large
orchestra, Wagner represents nature
from the very opening notes of the Ring
cycle. Listen out for the rising
melodies of the horns at the beginning
of Das Rheingold
depicting the glittering waters of
the river Rhine, experience a
powerful storm in the opening of Die Walküre, and
spot the birdsong in Siegfried
(from 35:08).
Take
in the natural world with Alasdair
Roberts' beautiful lullaby based
on an English translation of a Scottish
Gaelic lyric.

The music of mountains
'The
first movement of Alban Berg’s Three
Orchestral Pieces almost seems to
capture the mountain breathing...'

the second of his explorations of music

June News From Slung Low
Dear friends,
As you know, The Holbeck is still closed for shows
and college classes (the old normal) but open for volunteers:
delivering food, collecting prescriptions, lonely calls, whatever
our LS11 residents need (the new normal).
AND we’re very excited that we’re currently plotting how we can
possibly resume said shows and courses, in a different format,
for a future normal.
Hold that thought!
|
|
|
|
We opened
our LS11 Art Gallery. So far, just under 100 artworks have adorned
lampposts around Holbeck and Beeston for people to enjoy whilst on
their daily exercise.
Or you can explore virtually here
Look North and The Yorkshire Post interviewed some “chuffed” and
“proud” LS11 artists, many of whom have been posing with their pics
(above).
We are not closing entries yet. So if you’d still like to submit a
painting, drawing or photograph then email it to theholbeck@slunglow.org
We’ll print on waterproof board and find you a spot.
“There’s a lamppost for everybody!”
If you need art materials, then please email us
or give us a call on 07704 582137.

You Can
Bet Drive-In Edition
Thank you for all the lovely feedback about our fortnightly
gameshow ‘You
Can Bet’. As you can probably tell, we really
enjoy making it, so we’re thrilled you’re enjoying watching.
If you’ve not seen it yet (what have you been doing?), or you’ve
missed any, fear not - you can still catch past recordings on
our Facebook
The REALLY exciting news though is that the next instalment,
on Sunday
14th June at 7pm is a Drive-In edition.
So even though you can still watch live online on our Facebook and Twitter, you can book a space for
your car (sorry no bikes right now) to come down and watch in the
club car park. Yes, LIVE! Like the old days. We are buzzing!
Places are limited, so if you’d like to bring a car email theholbeck@slunglow.org NOW!
Or watch live on Sunday 14th June
at 7pm for:
Domestic Olympics
Three new games of derring-do
Special guests including poet Ian McMillan in ‘Come and Have A Go
If You Think You’re Bard Enough’
And we’re outside, so you know there’ll be pyros!

Unsung:
the Radio Play
'Unsung', written by Lisa Holdsworth, has been adapted from the

second tour this Spring, including a performance at the
Holbeck.
The Radio Play will go live at 7.30pm on Friday 5th June, available
across various streaming platforms, accessed via: unsungcollective.com/radio
Ada
Lovelace. Sophia Jex-Blake. Lilian Bader. Andrea
Dunbar. Heard of any of them? Neither had we.
Join the
visionary mathematician Ada Lovelace as she attempts to calculate -
taking as data the trials and triumphs of three other inspirational
female figures from our past - why women's achievements have been
relegated to the footnotes of history.

meantime, Stay Safe.
Be useful
and kind whenever you can. And if there is anything we can do for
you, just ask and it is done.

What’s
up New York,
The Black Lives
Matter movement has garnered support through protests across the 50 states
and countries globally, sending a strong message of solidarity across the
seas. If you are organizing to protest be mindful of rainy weather and bring
along your masks. 🌧
This weekend is
going to bring sunny weather and temperature in the 80s. ☀️🌡
If you’re
interested in supporting the bailout of people of color and activists you can
explore the Brooklyn
Bail Fund. 🗽💸

Shopping In Solidarity
The
Art Hoe Collective, founded by queer persons of color, has worked to secure a
welcoming space for artists and other creatives in their neighborhood. Their
dedication to supporting Black Lives Matter has led them to fund at least
$30,000 for black-owned businesses affected by looting.
Businesses that
fit the criteria set by the Art Hoe Collective can reach out via email to the
arthoecoreps@gmail.com with
photos of the damages and other legal paperwork.

Limited Transportation
This
Tuesday marked the release of a document detailing how workers would be able
to navigate a post curfew NYC. After its release, many question the exact
guidelines for workers, including those that are undocumented.
Restaurants with
consideration for their staff have shortened their hours of operation to keep
traveling at a minimum and ease commuters strains. What else is affecting
food delivery and its services?

BLM Support
Protests
fueled by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police have flourished
across the states. If you're not one of the activists on the front line, you
can still support the cause through other means.
For New Yorkers
seeking to fight against racial injustice, here's a round up of some New York
organizations supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.

What's
up New York,
Although we've
managed the financial and emotional struggle of Covid-19, we find ourselves
challenged as a nation again. Our team at spoiled NYC hopes you are remaining
strong and safe on this warm and rainy Wednesday. ⛈☀️
We stand in
solidarity with Breonna Taylor, we breathe with George Floyd, we run with
Ahmaud Arbery and, we remember the names of many others lost to excessive
force and injustice. If you want to know more about helping support protests
against oppression and participating legally, check out the Know
Your Rights information. 🌇📰
“How
shall Integrity face Oppression? What shall Honesty do in the face of
Deception, Decency in the face of Insult, Self-Defense before Blows? How
shall Desert and Accomplishment meet Despising, Detraction, and Lies? What
shall Virtue do to meet Brute Force? There are so many answers and so
contradictory; and such differences for those on the one hand who meet
questions similar to this once a year or once a decade, and those who face
them hourly and daily.”

Origins of Art
Art
and music are forms of expression, both of which have been used to convey
messages that are sociopolitical and emotional. Many places around the world
have filled their art and music with these messages to tell stories of the
past. Art from black people and communities is a prime example of this richness.
Spend time
immersing yourself in movements, signatures, and methods of black art that
changed art trends globally and still influence modern art today.
|
Thin Lines Of Peace
While
the media sheds strategic light on looters, rioters, and violent vigilantes
we ask that you pay attention to peaceful protestors and key activists as
well. NYC is home to many brave and vibrant activists against racism,
poverty, and other issues in the community.
Get to know some
big names defusing chaos, calming crowds, and doing important groundwork
between protests and local politics.
|
Money Talks
The
financial strain of Covid-19 and recent protests are compromising the success
of small businesses from black entrepreneurs and people of color. The money
from donations and purchases can help owners keep their storefront and
operations active.
If you want to use
purchases to provide desperately needed support for stores directly affected
by these circumstances check out this list of black-owned businesses in NYC.
