'Can I call on Baba Bach
and my ancestors to collaborate in the
same space?'
— Abel Selaocoe, cellist
As
both a classical musician and an
African musician, Abel Selaocoe asks
'Where is home?' As part of his Opera
North Resonance residency,
the award-winning cellist worked on
music influenced by different stringed
instruments from the African continent.
Our
Resonance scheme, launched in 2017,
offers time, space and resources for
professional artists from Black, Asian
and minority ethnic backgrounds working
in any musical genre to develop new
ideas. This week we announce the six
exciting projects selected for the
Lockdown Edition of the scheme, where
ideas and collaborations will evolve
under current social distancing and
travel regulations...
|
Explore Resonance
From
classically-trained singer Keertan Kaur
Rehal bringing
traditional South Asian art-song into
the 21st century, to an innovative
multi-sensory performance for the eyes,
ears and nose from Thabo, the
Resonance scheme encourages artists to
take their work in new directions and
to experiment with collaborators and
new ideas.

Protest Developments and Spending to Change
|
What's
up New York,
This Wednesday
will be cloudy but hot so stay hydrated if you'll be out and about in the
city. Curfews have ended to the benefit of active protestors, food delivery
personnel, and essential workers. 🌥
The law known as Section
50-a has been repealed, making complaints against officers, as well as
transcripts and final dispositions of disciplinary proceedings, public for
the first time in 44 years. 🚔👩⚖️
Song: Janelle
Monae - Pynk
“Nothing
strengthens authority so much as silence.”
―
Leonardo da Vinci

Current Fundraisers
Although
plenty of galleries and artists have worked to board up spaces during the
protests, many are also using art to bring awareness to important issues.
Significant work
is being done to raise money for numerous bail funds and organizations aimed
at racism, like the the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition and Minnesota Freedom
Funds. Read more about how you can get involved and support the cause as
well.
