SPRING NEWSLETTER
Idle Being: Caroline Teng

Idle Being

We decided to start something small. An attempt to bring back that sense of belonging that was lost as we distanced.

We invited and paid 100 women we have previously worked with to send us a short video: unedited, no text, speech, nor direction. We asked these women not to labour in the task, but rather to share a small, idle pleasure in their day that might offer some comfort to another.

As spring arrived, so did these #IdleBeing videos. We have been publishing them online to offer a place of belonging away from the noise. Follow the links below to view them on Instagram, YouTube, and Vimeo.

Power Tools: How to smash a double-glazed window

Remember Helen?

The Power Tools DIY series we launched last year was due to be exhibited in two exhibitions this spring: ‘Hippo Campus: Where We Learn’ at Newlyn Art Gallery and ‘Tell me the story of all these things’ at Firstsite in Colchester.

As both galleries have instead celebrated this series online, and perhaps also because they have come into their own while so many people are staying home, these videos have had thousands of new views.

Proving particularly popular are those showing how to drill into a brick wall and how to smash a double-glazed window.

The latter is the keystone of the series reflecting that it can take women an average of seven attempts to leave a violent partner.

Build your own den

Another initiative from Firstsite that has proven very popular is their activity packs designed by artists titled ‘Art is where the home is’.

We were invited to include an activity and decided that as always, we would like to help create spaces to belong. We have included a den building activity in Activity Pack 3, joining those by other artists such as Lucy Gunning, Catherine Yass, Shawanda Corbett, Gillian Wearing and Cornelia Parker.

Idle Women is an arts and social justice project that creates vibrant and adventurous spaces with and for, all women to belong.
