March News From Slung Low

Dear friends,
It has nearly been a month since we finished filming The Good Book, and we are currently in the process of editing it. We are so excited about how it is going to turn out so watch this space for developments!
There is so much going on down at the club, have a look at all of the shows and events going on, as well and college information and courses and we hope to see you soon!

Shows at The Holbeck this month

Touch - Four Hands Dance
Saturday 7th March at 11.00 am
With a cast of two professional performers dancing with their own children, and a community cast of families from the local area, Touch explores the themes of connection, intimacy and physical play between parents and their children. People of all ages are invited to witness this thought-provoking dance performance, which investigates the multitude of relationships between adults and children in an intimate environment.

New Words, New Worlds - A Creative Vocabulary For The Future with Roger Hill
Sunday 8th March at 5pm
Part of the Big Ideas series in the Cultural Community College.

If we want to change things maybe we need to change the words we use, and dispense with some bad new words and recover some good old ones - or vice versa, or something. Where we talked "money", do we need to talk "attention"? Where "possessions", "experiences"?  What should "Wonder" and "World" mean now? Is there still case for "Austerity"?
Time to think about all this together.

Jonny Magnanti - Tony Harrison's 'V'
Sunday 8th March at 7.30pm
Jonny Magnanti, a Leeds born actor, interprets Tony Harrison’s still controversial poem,‘V’, drawing us into the municipal graveyard, daubed with swastikas and profanity and littered with discarded cans of Harp lager. In this production, supported by soundscapes from the period, with echoes of the miners strike, the IRA, conflict on our streets and a lack of hope for the working class skinhead at the centre of the internal dialogue, both Tony and Jonny, confronting the issue of displacement and alienation from one’s class and family roots.

Queer Lady M
Sunday 15th March at 5pm
It’s time for Queer Lady M’s cabaret! Performed by gender-fluid artist Shane Gabriel, Lady Macbeth comes to life like never experienced before.
There’s outrageous lip-syncing, cheeky dancing and sassy conversation as Queer Lady M invites you to enter her world of passion and shade.
But what happens when the show is over, when Shane removes the makeup and puts Lady M to bed? What stories will come to light as Shane invites us into his twilight world?

Sweatbox

Sunday 20th March at 6.30pm or 7.00pm
Travelling across the UK, Chloë Moss’s Sweatbox invites you to enter the back of a prison van in which three women share their stories of arrival and anticipation as they are transported from court to prison, from prison to prison, from prison to court.

Listen to conversations behind the idea of Sweatbox by booking a place on our Big Idea: Clean Break.
Clean Break: 40 years of arts & criminal justice
Sunday 20th March at 7.30pm
In this BIG IDEAS talk, we’ll hear from a Clean Break artistic director and some of the women who have benefitted from the company’s 40 years of working in the arts & criminal justice sector. The company includes members who have lived experience, and the event includes the opportunity to watch a performance of Sweatbox, by Chloë Moss. Please book to see either the 18:30 or 19:00 performance in addition to booking this talk.

Dr Zeena Feldman - Digital Overload:
Sunday 22nd March at 3.30pm

Part of the Big Ideas series in the Cultural Community College.

What does wellbeing look like in this contemporary ecology of the always-on and always-connected? This talk explores these and related questions by drawing on the findings of two research projects: Quitting Social Media and Me Apps.

Lionman
Sunday 22nd March at 5pm
Leonard is a writer. For a commercial greeting cards company. But Leonard wants more than that: Leonard wants to write films, Leonard wants to be famous and, most importantly, Leonard wants the girl next door. As he works daily for his dreary job and nightly on his beloved script Leonard grapples with love, work pressures, an increasing discomfort with masculinity and his own irrepressible imagination.

Presented by Dapertutto

SPOTLIGHT ON:

The Art of Social Dreaming
Saturday 7th March & 14th March at 11am
Are you fascinated by what our dreams tell us about what’s going on in our shared subconscious – and maybe even about the future?  Are you up for a journey with an intrepid band of explorers to forge experiments in the matrix of collective dreaming – and day-dreaming? Are artists the real social dreamers?

Tessa Gordziejko is a writer and theatre-maker.  She’ll be leading the expedition into the unknown through accessible psycho-social techniques developed over the past 80 years, to discover new creative territories of story, myth and imagination.

The Holbeck is open for a drink, including a new real ale each week, on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings, all day Sunday when there’s members games like Bingo, Play Your Cards Right and a Quiz, and from 3 hours before every Leeds United home game. And while we’d love you all to become members of the club, you don’t have to be a member to come down and join us for a drink. All are welcome!

We look forward to welcoming you soon.
