Some Sonny Day
In New York yesterday afternoon, hundreds turned out at the New
York Public Library for late Knopf
leader Sonny Mehta's public memorial service. Meanwhile, in
financial news, a tough fourth quarter led to a decline in sales and earnings
at S&S in
2019. In the children's book world, Random House
will split Schwartz and Wade Books into two imprints next year and
Dan Brown is
writing a children's book. Plus, Wired takes a look at
"Doomer Lit," the
"hottest" new literary genre, while the AP shines a
light on how bestselling YA authors are pivoting to
adult novels.

2019's Weak Bookstore Sales; A Memoir by Kaepernick
It was a slow 2019 for
bookstore sales, which fell 7.5% in December compared to a year
ago, and finished the year with a 5.7% sales drop compared to 2018. NFL star
Colin Kaepernick is launching a
publishing house and writing a memoir that will be published in
audio by Audible. Bookstores in
Arizona and California are working to register Democratic voters
in an effort to turn the Copper State blue.
Amazon's very first employee reflected on the company's incredible growth as well as the conflict it presents, saying he is both "proud of what it has become" and that the retail giant scares him. Julia Ebner, a research expert on online extremism, disinformation, and hate speech, describes how undercover work is "a bit like writing a book." And in honor of Valentine's Day, here are 11 romantic books that feature the power of love, and eight more that celebrate unlikely unions.

What's for Breakfast at BookExpo
It may only be February, but BookExpo will be here before we
know it, and the event has announced its
Adult Book & Author Breakfast speakers. At Wayne State
University Press, three senior
employees were fired suddenly last Friday, possibly auguring a
transition to a digital publishing program. In Canada, book buyers'
habits were unchanged last year, BookNet Canada has found.
Meanwhile, at a panel last week, Roxane Gay, Myriam Gurba, and others discussed the
state of American publishing following the American Dirt
dustup, which the Los Angeles Times covered. Amazon has begun quietly
removing pro-Nazi books from its website, the New York Times
reports. CNN highlights how former NFL wide receiver Matthew A. Cherry
brought his picture book, Hair Love, from a
Kickstarter to an Oscar win. Also at the New York Times,
author Brandon Taylor gets the
profile treatment for his buzzy debut novel, Real Life. And
Roger Kahn, author of The Boys of Summer, has died at 92.
Adult Breakfast Speakers Announced for BookExpo
Joy Harjo, Carmen Maria Machado, Ilhan Omar, and Rebecca Roanhorse will join radio host and MSNBC political analyst Zerlina Maxwell at this year's Adult Book & Author Breakfast at BookExpo, set for May 28. Another Swing, Another Miss
The latest effort by a publisher (and, in this case, a
bookseller) to put their money where their mouths are in terms of diversity
has gone down in flames, with Barnes &
Noble and Penguin Random House canceling their Diverse Editions promotion
after the program was accused of being "literary blackface." In
China and beyond, the coronavirus out of the Wuhan province is impacting
publishing worldwide. And Veronica Roth, a YA force, is pivoting to
adult fiction with her next book. At the New York Times, Alice Mayhew
is remembered by her authors, and at the New Yorker, Adam
Gopnik praises George
Steiner for his seriousness.
