Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes 2 March 2020

Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 2 March 2020, 5.30-7pm where Gemma, Julia, Barbara, Karen, Kathy and Cassie were in attendance, Mandy, Sarah, Daniel and Sam having passed on their apologies.

The minutes from the last CWG were passed.

WIP Updates: Karen has edited her romantic suspense novel BFY and submitted it to the David Higham Open Day competition, written 5 chapters on her new romantic suspense Undercover, written 5 scenes for her YA fantasy Half-lands and applied for the Bluemoose Books bursary, sent first 3 chapters and synopsis of her crime novel TP to the Lindsey Kelk Mentorship opportunity and the Jericho Writers Self-edit your Novel Course plus sent an elevator pitch and the first three chapters of DH to Helen at Cornerstones. Julia has written a new piece for a U3A assignment. Barbara has written a few more days of her diary story. Gemma has arranged for a research visit for her new WIP to Wakefield archive on Monday (West Yorkshire Archive Service). Cassie has written a new piece for a U3A assignment. Kathy has been editing Tobias, 23k words and now needs beta readers. Karen and Cassie volunteered to be beta readers for her. Kathy has also been working on her WIP Book Puppet, a black comedy.

Feedback sessions: Barbara shared a text message that her daughter had sent her about the kindness of a stranger at a supermarket checkout which Julia said reminded her of the book Surfing in the Himalayas where the writer ended up becoming a monk. The members agreed this would make a good premise for a short story. Kathy also mentioned something similar that happened to her at a supermarket. As no-one else had brought anything to share, Karen shared a short scene from her new romantic suspense WIP that she had written earlier that day. This led to a discussion about the plot.

CW comps/workshops/events: There is a Help I've Written a Children's Book workshop at Leeds Library on Saturday with creative writing workshops led by James Nicol and Liz Flanagan. Karen also informed members about the Jericho Writers, Writers HQ and Barbellian Prize fiction competitions. There is also a Grazia competition (see below).

Writing challenge: For the writing challenge this week, Karen is setting the Grazia competition (members do not have to enter the competition if they do not want, just complete the writing task - this does not stop you entering if you wish to do so). The competition is to finish author Diana Evan'ss opening chapter 'Caught' using between 800-1000 words. The competition deadline is 13 March should you wish to enter and good luck if you do:

The writing challenge piece should be brought along to the next CWG meeting should you wish to rise to the challenge.

The next CWG meeting is Monday 16 March 2020 at 5.39-7pm at Cleckheaton Library. New members always welcome.
