As our celebrated winter season of opera heads out on tour, attention quickly and excitedly turns to our upcoming collaboration with Leeds Playhouse on Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece, A Little Night Music. Conducted by James Holmes (Street Scene) and directed by the Playhouse’s James Brining (The Magic Flute), this sparkling new production of Sondheim’s tantalising tale will feature a whole host of Opera North favourites – you may recognise one or two faces from our winter season – and a return to the company for the legendary Dame Josephine Barstow. Catch it while you can: Arya on tour This March, go on a one-of-a-kind musical journey with award-winning sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun's brand new sitar concerto. The Orchestra and the Chorus of Opera North will also be joining forces to perform extracts from some of the greatest operas of all time, including the delicate Humming Chorus of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. All about love, life and death in New York City, this exhilarating fusion of golden-age Broadway, opera, jazz and the blues is the hottest ticket in town (The Telegraph agrees). Musical highlights Street Scene’s interwoven stories are brought to life by an incredible blend of music which is just as diverse as the people living on the street. Seven doors, seven families The action plays out in the stairwells, halls and doorways of one of New York's iconic tenement buildings. Nerve-jangling drama this February… A haunting ghost story with a psychological twist, our edge-of-your-seat production of The Turn of the Screw opens soon. Britten's chilling opera combines menacing spirits, a paranoid Governess and the possessed wards she has vowed to protect to nail-biting effect.
