McKee Seminars

With details of upcoming McKee Seminars:

Long-form storytelling is already the dominant artform of the century. Writing for the screen has brought about a new understanding of character, with series unfurling over 70+ hours now revealing complexities of character and humanity the likes of which we've never seen. Moreover, successful spin-offs such as BETTER CALL SAUL show the depth of world building that can be brought to the screen by insightful writers in command of their story.

"The best advice I can think of is gird up your loins for failure because you will fail more often than you will succeed. And, given that information, go down swinging at something that is important."

Thanks to magnificent series such as BREAKING BAD, THE WIRE and VIKINGS, writing for the screen has brought about a new understanding of character. These series unfurling over 70+ hours now reveal complexities of character and humanity the likes of which we've never seen. Moreover, successful spin-offs such as BETTER CALL SAUL show the depth of world building that can be brought to the screen by insightful writers in command of their story.
Robert McKee's TV SERIES Day teaches the tools and principles to master television's unique storytelling challenges.

McKee's TV SERIES Day Features:
  • A half-hour video lesson from industry insider Margaret Nagle (BOARDWALK EMPIRE);
  • Robert McKee's in-depth teaching of the principles of long-form story and character design;
  • Analysis of cast polarization and dimensions, character arcs and plotlines of BREAKING BAD;

Join us at McKee's NYC TV SERIES Day,
and rewrite your future.

"After watching Robert McKee dissecting television's recent great characters, such as Walter White and Tony Soprano, most of the audience wanted to go back to their own creations to review them. McKee's insights are tremendous."

Why Knowing Story Is Not Enough
We've heard music all our lives. We dance and sing along. We think we understand music until we try to compose it and what comes out of the piano scares the cat.
Each of the arts is defined by its essential form. Across all cultures, through the ages, this innate form has been endlessly variable but changeless. From Homer to Tarantino, the universal story form shapes a work into a story.
Simply knowing story isn't enough. Writers must learn.
Robert McKee's STORY Seminar gives you a deep dive into the principles, complexities and conventions of the story form, including:
  • Story design and structure;
  • The principles of character dimension and design;
  • The composition of scenes;
  • The writer's method;
  • How it all works: see how the principles of story are applied during a scene-by-scene screening and analysis of CASABLANCA.
Because the principles of story are eternal and universal, McKee's STORY Seminar is ideal for storytellers of all types: Screenwriters, TV Writers, Novelists, Playwrights, Filmmakers, Directors, Producers, Documentary Makers, Actors, Game Designers and more.

Robert McKee's "Works / Doesn't Work" Film Review

PARASITE WORKS

This excellent Korean crimedy from writer/director Bong Joon-ho (THE HOST, SNOWPIERCER) has become an international phenomenon, collecting accolades from the Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTAs, achieving worldwide commercial and critical success. How did it do it?
In this "Works / Doesn't Work" review, I'll take up the question every filmmaker with global ambitions asks: What makes an international hit? What does the world want? The answer is two forms of pleasure: New knowledge and an old mirror.
1. NEW KNOWLEDGE:
Audiences and readers do not go to a storyteller to learn yet again what they already know. They go in hope of discovering a world they've never seen before. Like an explorer, they want to part the leaves and discover a time, place and culture they don't know and could never experience in their own lives—in short, they want the delight of learning. [Read more...]
2. A MIRROR:
As the story-goer explores a new setting and a new cast, she seeks the second pleasure: A discovery of herself. She gazes into principal characters with the hope of finding a shared humanity. Not in every way, obviously, but a positive trait she recognizes in herself. If found, it results in empathy, a subconscious connection to the effect: "That character's humanity is like mine. Therefore, I want that character to get whatever that character wants because if I were that character in those circumstances, I'd want the same thing for myself." [Read more...]

What Is the World of Your Story?

To tell an original, cliché-free story you must possess a depth and breadth of knowledge of your story world. When creating your story setting and characters, begin by providing unique and satisfying answers to these three questions:
1. What are the values of your story world?
What do your characters consider good and evil? What do they see as right and wrong? Moreover, consider this key principle: Good/evil and right/wrong don't necessarily have anything to do with legal/illegal.
2. What is the backstory?
This is an often misunderstood term. It doesn't mean history or biography. Backstory is the set of significant events that occurred in the characters' past that the writer can use to build story progressions.
3. What is your cast design?
Nothing in a work of art is there by accident. Ideas may come spontaneously, but we weave them consciously into the fabric of our story. We cannot allow any character that comes to mind to stumble into the story. Each role must fit a purpose.
By providing masterful answers to these questions, and many others, the research of your world will reach the saturation point. Then your story, like a portrait by a master painter, will become one of a kind.

The weakest possible excuse to include anything in a story is: "But it actually happened." A story must be like life, but not so verbatim that it has no depth or meaning. All writers must come to understand the relationship of story to life: story is metaphor for life.

Why Facts Won't Make Your Story True
Fact vs. Fiction
A storyteller is a life poet, an artist who transforms day-to-day living, dream and actuality into a poem whose rhyme scheme is events rather than words. A two-hour, or 300-page, metaphor that says: "life is like this."
Facts are neutral. The weakest possible excuse to include anything in a story is: "But it actually happened."
A story must be like life, but not so verbatim that it has no depth or meaning. All writers must come to understand the relationship of story to life: story is metaphor for life.
What happens is fact. Truth is what we think about what happens.
Flawed and false storytelling substitutes spectacle for substance, trickery for truth. Robert McKee's STORY Seminar teaches that storytelling is the creative demonstration of truth. In an intense 3 days, McKee explores the ageless principles, conventions and complexities of the story form, including:
  • Story design and structure;
  • The principles of character dimension and design;
  • The composition of scenes;
  • The writer's method;
  • How it all works: see how the principles of story are applied during a scene-by-scene screening and analysis of CASABLANCA.
Because the principles of story are eternal and universal, Robert McKee's STORY Seminar is ideal for storytellers of all types: Screenwriters, TV Writers, Novelists, Playwrights, Filmmakers, Directors, Producers, Documentary Makers, Actors, Game Designers and more.

The Key to Self-Expression as a Writer

The storyteller leads us into expectation, makes us think we understand the story world, then turns that world on its head.
Of all the reactions a turning point creates, chief among them is insight. Insight into characters, the story world and most importantly, the mind of the writer. This insight is the audience's reward for paying attention. Masterfully crafted stories deliver this pleasure scene after scene.
But if we were to ask writers how they express themselves, more often than not they'll reply "With my words — descriptions and dialogue."
In truth, our most powerful means of self-expression is the unique way in which we turn a story.
Exquisite, perceptive prose cannot substitute for a beautifully-crafted turning point. What audiences crave is the insight that floods their mind when they match their life experiences against an artist's masterfully turned scene.
Language is a tool and must never become a decorative end of its own. The key to success as a writer lies within the turning points you create.

Learn how to craft masterful turning points
at McKee's STORY Seminar this spring.

.

The Complex Simplicity of Story

All stories take the form of a Quest.
To understand the Quest form of your story, penetrate the psychology of your protagonist and find an honest answer to the question: "What does he or she want?"
By studying the heart of the protagonist and discovering his or her desire, you begin to see the arc of your story, and the Quest on which your character must embark.
The essential form of story is simple, but that's like saying the essential form of music is simple. It is. It's twelve notes. But these twelve notes conspire into everything we have ever called music.
When a writer takes up this seemingly simple form, they discover how complex story is, how inordinately difficult it is to do.

Master the complex simplicity of story
at a McKee Seminar this spring.

"McKee's book and seminar, STORY, changed the trajectory of my professional career, from a novelist on her ninth book that wasn't going anywhere, to a published novelist with a Miramax movie deal."
