Best Creative Company
Award
Earlier this month we were thrilled to win the Best
Creative Company Award at the North East Business Awards!
The awards themselves are quite a fancy affair and
the winners don’t find out until their category is announced, so we had our
own ‘Oscars moment’ of trying to pull the right kind of
relaxed-yet-gracious face while standing on rather a large stage.
Of course, we were delighted to find out we had won.
As a small team we work really hard year-round to create opportunities and
support writers at all stages of their careers, and it meant a lot to
receive this recognition from the region’s business community. You

Gordon Burn Prize
longlist revealed
The longlist has been announced for the Gordon Burn
Prize 2019 and it’s a corker. This prize consistently finds the most
exciting, boldest new books across fiction and non-fiction, and we are so
pleased with the titles that have been selected this year. If you’re

People’s Landscape on
the Durham Coast: Writing Residency
This summer we are working with National Trust on a
an exciting project on Durham’s ‘radical’ coast, and we’re looking for a
writer to undertake a residency in the area, producing work that will be
presented at Durham Book Festival 2019. This opportunity is open to

Words First: spoken word
at Alphabetti
We're working with BBC Radio 1Xtra, BBC Asian Network
and Contains Strong Language to find the best emerging spoken word talent
in the UK. Join us at Alphabetti Theatre, Newcastle on Tuesday 11 June
(7.30pm) for a dynamic spoken word showcase that will premiere new work by
selected artists aged 18-30. This is a free event, reserve

The
Emma Press have published Dragons of the Prime,
a new anthology of dinosaur poems for children featuring work from 38 poets
including Northern writers Jane Burn, Harry Man and Cheryl Pearson.

Former detective James Ellson has
secured a book deal with crowd-funding publisher Unbound for his crime
thriller The Trail. To hit
his fundraising target James (who has previously advised acclaimed
author Paula Hawkins) is offering police & crime writing advice
for writers to help improve the veracity of their fiction.

8 June, 10:00am-12:30pm for a novel-writing
workshop focusing on the importance of setting. There
will be writing exercises and discussion, and the chance for feedback,

afterwards.

Pennines AONB Partnership and award-winning crime novelist David Mark for
a series of six creative writing
workshops at Killhope
Museum, exploring key themes of storytelling such as
setting, character and plot. Workshops will run every Saturday from 22 June to 10 August at

Methuen Publishers will be releasing a commemorative
edition of Helena Fox’s D-Day play Bomb Happy on 6 June to mark the
75th anniversary of D-Day and to tie with a new
commissioned production of the play. There will be five
performances from 14-16
June at York
Army Museum and including post-shows for audiences
to meet veterans whose memories are explored in the script.

hosting two creative writing workshops led by writer Dani Watson focusing
on writing techniques through creative games and practical tips. The
sessions will run on Friday
