Writing Workshops in Santa Fe, New Mexico

May 13 - 16, 2019
Learning to Listen to Your Story
with Margaret Wrinkle
This workshop with Margaret Wrinkle focuses on strengthening the access points of our writing. She explains, I'm interested in creating stories that haunt us by changing how we see and expanding our consciousness. Writing that possesses this kind of potency comes from another dimension. A dimension that writers have to actually travel to, experience fully, and return from in order to be able to recreate it in their work. Too often, I see writers worrying about crafting their material when they haven't yet fully imagined and inhabited the world of their story."

May 13 - 16, 2019
Writing in Motion: Finding Inspiration and Creativity on the Move
with Katie Arnold

Though we most often write when stationary, the act of writing is profoundly physical. Often our best ideas arise when we are outside, moving through the world. The mind, lulled by repetitive motion in our bodies, loosens with our limbs. Our stories flow when we flow.

In this workshop, we explore the connection between our physical selves and our creative minds, the link between movement and storytelling, landscape and creativity. Each day we walk, roam, and hike as a way to engage with the writing process. There is also time to wander the trails, streets, neighborhoods, and secret passageways of Santa Fe and northern New Mexico on your own.

May 13 - 16, 2019
Writing the Fantastic
with Kelly Barnhill
Ever since we could string a few words together to make a sentence, human beings have been telling tales of the fantastic and the unexplained. Whether spinning yarns of the wooly mammoth that got away or conjuring ghosts and gods, we have been enhancing our understanding of all that exists on the earth (as well as above it and underneath it) through our engagement with the fantastic, the speculative, and the mythic.

In this workshop, Newbury Medal-winning author Kelly Barnhill takes participants on a rich and inspiring exploration of the fantastic.

May 20 - 23, 2019
The Craft of Food Memoir Writing
with Molly Wizenberg
Good food writing is rarely just about food; it's about people, places, the way we live, the meat and bones of who we are. In this productive, hands-on workshop, author Molly Wizenberg focuses on the craft and art of narrative food writing, guiding participants as we explore how sensory details of food can help us unlock our most fertile memories.
Cooking, eating, sharing foodfrom these seemingly mundane acts of daily life, we can return through language to past versions of ourselves: experiences we thought we'd forgotten, the thing our father said, the way a lover looked at us.

September 16 - 19, 2019
Creative Writing Using Magic and Metaphor: A Personal Journey
with Jamie Figueroa
Summoning the magic and metaphor woven through myth, folklore, and fairytales opens our creative writing in surprising ways. These forms invite unobstructed leaps in the imagination, and when transferred to our personal traumas and triumph they invoke new narratives, perspectives, and portals for exploration and healing.

September 16 - 19, 2019
Writing About Food: Memoir, Blogs, Cookbooks, Reviews and More
with Deborah Madison
What, precisely, is involved in writing about food, whether a cookbook, a memoir, or a blog? There is no single answer to this question; book publishing is a big and complex subject regardless that is always changing. In this workshop, award-winning writer Deborah Madison illuminates the many facets of the process, both from her own perspective as an author and from the perspectives of publishers.

Located in the historic, central highlands of Mexico, San Miguel offers a gracious and safe environment for exploring the culture of this vibrant town while pursuing your creativity and personal style in workshops with seasoned workshop instructors.

October 13 - 18, 2019
Travel Writing as Memoir: San Miguel
with Rolf Potts
Travel transforms us. When we venture out to connect with the world, we open ourselves to insights and revelations about our place within it. Conscious travel becomes not so much about the destination as an end in itself but a means of understanding ourselves in a new place.
Writing while traveling is a time-honored tradition that gives us a deeper sense of what we are experiencing as we begin to see connections between seemingly unrelated events and catch glimpse of the import they contain. Because it provides insights that may have eluded us in the past, travel writing is a well-worn path to self-discovery, providing fascinating stories for our travel memoirs.
Spend five days honing your keen eye, refining your attentive ear, and indulging your spirit, hungry to make meaningful connections between the world outside and the one within.

October 20 - 25, 2019
Senses Working Overtime: Writing with Joy - San Miguel
with Luís Alberto Urrea

This is a generative workshop. It is a combination of experience, lecture, and writing time. Luis gives you as many examples and writing prompts as can fit into your time at the workshop. We complete writing exercises and share them with each other. Sometimes it might just be an exercise in seeing, but it all to goes into your notebooks. This workshop requires your acceptance of the many gifts of the day. Once you see them, they never stop coming. In some ways, Luis sees writing like a hummingbird that must be welcomed into your garden. Bring lots of pens and pencils.

Writing always begins in the sensesin opening our eyes, ears, nostrils, taste buds, and skin follicles to the landscape around us. If we pay strict attention while we're out in the physical world, it will give us everything we need to tell our stories.
In magnificent San Miguel Allende during the build-up to Day of the Dead, we have the opportunity to enact this process together. We collect sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures and do writing exercises that turn those glimmers into vignettes, stories, and personal essays.
