Our Classic Concerts series captures the raw energy and excitement of live performance, through two of the most acclaimed concert films of all time. Experience both films on our outdoor concert stage screen and transport yourself back in time to feel like you're really in the audiences of these must-see live shows.

STOP MAKING SENSE - TALKING HEADS

24 July | 8.30pm

On the way they take in classics like Once in a Lifetime and Girlfriend is Better, complete with gigantic business suit.

AMAZING GRACE - ARETHA FRANKLIN

25 July | 6pm

Over two days in 1972, Aretha Franklin recorded her new gospel album at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Watts, Los Angeles. The recording was also captured by a film crew led by Sydney Pollack. The footage remained unseen until 2018 when it was used to create this intimate concert film which was released to universal acclaim.

// PARIS STORIES //

Celebrate the Paris Olympics with our Paris Stories film series at Cinema on the Square. We've curated a selection of films that capture the rich diversity of Paris onscreen. Fom the enchanting romance and magic of the City of Light to the raw, energetic vibes of its concrete suburbs and alternative music scenes. Join us for this unique opportunity to see films made in or inspired by Paris in the epic outdoor setting of Millennium Square on a giant screen with a concert sound system.

AMÉLIE

24 July | 5.45pm

Oozing charm and inventive flourishes, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s delightful romantic comedy exudes a genuine warmth and cheeky humour throughout. Amélie balances her waitressing job in Montmartre with a desire to help those around her through unnecessarily elaborate schemes. When she decides to focus on her own life for a change, she begins a game of cat and mouse with equally eccentric soul Nino. Join other Amélie fans for this outdoor screening of the much-loved Paris-set film on the giant concert stage screen on Millennium Square!

MOULIN ROUGE!

25 July | 3pm

Idealistic poet Christian escapes to Paris to join the Bohemian revolution of 1899. There he is drawn into the sultry underworld of the Moulin Rouge cabaret club, becoming infatuated with its star performer Satine. As the star-crossed lovers continue their affair in secret, a deathly final curtain looms that will change the course of their lives and Paris forever. With extravagant musical numbers set to some of the biggest tunes of the century, Baz Luhrmann’s grand spectacle is a gritty musical love affair to remember, a must-be seen on the big screen.

LA HAINE

25 July | 8.15pm

Mathieu Kassovitz’s explosive 1995 classic La haine was something bracingly new for French cinema, showing a different side of Paris, the ‘banlieue’ in the concrete suburbs in a fraught 24 hours after the police shooting of a young Arab man. Featuring dizzyingly effective black and white cinematography and a vibrant hip hop soundtrack that will come alive on the big screen in Millennium Square.

GIRLHOOD

26 July | 2:30pm

Don’t miss the chance to see a 10th anniversary screening of Céline Sciamma’s powerful coming-of-age drama Girlhood, on the huge open-air screen on Millennium Square. The film follows Marieme, a young girl navigating the challenges of adolescence in a tough Paris suburb. As she joins a gang of free-spirited girls, Marieme slowly comes out of her shell and experiences moments of shared joy and freedom.

CLÉO FROM 5 TO 7

26 July | 5pm

Step into the streets of sixties Paris with Agnès Varda’s radical French New Wave film, screening on the outdoor concert screen. Cléo From 5 to 7 chronicles two hours in the life of pop singer Cléo as she aimlessly roams the Parisian streets, encountering several friends and strangers. Blending vérité and melodrama, Varda creates an arresting portrait of one woman's inner journey as she confronts mortality.

// FAMILY FILMS //

In partnership with Leeds Young Film Festival (LYFF), we proudly present a selection of our favourite family films on the big screen. Bring the whole family to experience these magical films, perfect for all ages, in our outdoor summer cinema experience.

WONKA

24 July | 3pm

Paul King, the director and co-writer of the Paddington films breathes life into another whimsical world in this prequel to Roald Dahls’ beloved story. A young Willy Wonka teams up with orphans, misfits and a renegade Oompa - Loompa (played by Hugh Grant) in an attempt to open his first chocolate shop. For new and old fans alike, watching this vibrant exploration of Wonka's story will be sure to sweeten the most savoury of palettes.

RATATOUILLE

25 July | 12:30pm

Remy appreciates good food and has quite a sophisticated palate. He would love to become a famous French chef so he can create and enjoy culinary masterpieces to his heart's delight. The only problem is, Remy is a rat; but he won't let that stop him. Experience Pixar’s highly entertaining and fast-paced Paris-set animated comedy, outdoors on the giant concert stage screen on Millennium Square!

ENCANTO SING-ALONG

26 July | 12pm

Join us for this special outdoor Sing-along version of the enchanting Disney animation, with an irresistible chart-topping soundtrack from Lin Manual Miranda. Revisit the mystical mountains of Colombia, home to the extraordinary Madrigal family, each blessed with a unique gift by the magic of the Encanto. Sing along to your favorite songs like 'We Don’t Talk About Bruno' in this heartwarming musical adventure for fans of all ages.

 // FRIDAY FINALE //

 BARBIE
26 July / 7.30pm

Dance the night away this summer with Barbie at Cinema on the Square. Hot pink houses, fashionable wardrobes and all the beach-ing off you could wish for, Barbie (Margot Robbie) is living the dream in Barbie Land until an existential crisis, flat feet and thoughts of death hit. When her questions lead her on a path of discovery to the real world, Barbie (and a tag-along Ken) witness the dangers of humanity and learn about their very different places in it. Featuring an all-star cast of dolls and a hit summer soundtrack, Greta Gerwig’s 'sublime' blockbuster will have you laughing, crying and wanting to throw a giant blowout party with planned choreography… and a bespoke song.

Behind the Scenes

We have some new faces in the team. A big Creative Scene welcome to Iqra Rafiq who recently joined us as Assistant Producer.

Iqra Rafiq - Assistant Producer

Iqra first got involved with us as a Young Producer, shaping and producing the Young producers project,  BlINK  several  years ago-  if you can remember that far back. Since then, Iqra has gone from strength to strength establishing her own  creative textiles practise and running workshops and activities  with women in her hometown of Batley. In 2022, she exhibited her work at Oakwell Hall as part of the Change Project.

Iqra  has joined us as Assistant Producer,  helping to develop and deliver a programme of events throughout the year, including with South Asian women and girls, and with young people.

Keep a look out for:

A new and improved Creative Scene Website
We’re busy behind the scenes working on a new and improved website which we hope to launch in the spring. The new site will incorporate easier to find information about events, artist opportunities and have a directory of past projects for everyone to view.

Programme announcementskeep checking our website and socials for the latest information about shows, performances and projects we are working on.

Introducing

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery

Open Day 2024

Hi,

Our annual Distillery Open Day is now just three days away, this Saturday July 27th 2024! Whether you’ve already purchased your ticket or are planning to join us on the day, this email contains all the information you need about the day.

Special Release

Filey Bay Yorkshire Day 2024

70cl | 55% ABV | £95 | Distillery Exclusive

The star of the show... Filey Bay Yorkshire Day 2024, our annual Special Release, will be ready and launching on the day.

Exclusive to the distillery and limited to 2 per customer.

We operate a Challenge 25 policy. Please drink responsibly.

Book Your Tickets

If you haven't purchased your ticket yet, there's still time! Tickets include a tour and a nosing glass as well as all-day access to what's happening around the distillery.

Masterclasses

There will be two free masterclasses on the main stage: ‘Legacy and Conservation’ with a focus on conservation and ethos and ‘Made of Yorkshire’ featuring a selection of local artisan producers.

We’re also very excited to be hosting two special masterclasses: ‘Fresh from the Cask’ which is now sold out and ‘Directors Choice’ which has limited tickets still available, more info can be found via the link below.

What to expect

The Distillery Gates will open at 12 noon on 27th July 2024, with the first Masterclasses and tours starting a little after that. Around the distillery grounds, you’ll find stalls, stands and a big stage where we’ll be hosting conversations and live music too. Last orders will be called at 5.45pm and the gates will close at 6.15pm. You will be provided with a full rundown of events and timings upon arrival.

The Marquee: Home to the bar and the stage, the main marquee will be the hub of the day. Full of live music, "conversations with" and possibly a couple of tastings too.

Rolling Tours: Every thirty minutes, Tours will head around the distillery, showcasing the hows, whys and whats of Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery and Filey Bay Whisky. These are free for everyone (no under 6s we're afraid).

Live Music: Soul Rida, an incredible eight-piece band from North Yorkshire will be taking to the main stage, playing music from four decades including Soul, Motown, Northern Soul and Disco eras.

Producers & Craftspeople: Three Ridings Coffee, Stosh Workshop, RSPB, Jensen’s Cooperage, Bullion Chocolate, Wold Top Brewery and Yorkshire Coast 1779 will be at the distillery sharing their stories and offering samples, as well as selling produce & products for you to take home.

Food & Drink: Embers will be serving fantastic food served to be purchased on-site, and, of course, the Wold Top Brewery van will serve a range of beers (including the delicious low-alcohol 'Intuition'). The Pot Still Coffee Shop will be open for coffee, tea and cake, and there'll be plenty of whisky to enjoy.

Public Transport

Bus: There is a stop on Cross Hill, near the church and there is another one on Hungate Lane. Both are about a 15-minute walk or a 3-minute car journey. The bus stop is 0.80 miles from the Distillery.

Train: The train is much closer compared to the bus stop. Hunmanby train station is a 0.3-mile walk from the Distillery. Click here for the train timetable. (We recommend checking the train times before you set off due to ongoing rail strikes)

Local Taxi: Nippy - 01723 377377  (Scarborough ) Station Taxis - 01723 366366 (Scarborough) Radio Taxis - 01723 515515 (Filey)

Important information

Parking: On-site parking is available after the main entrance on the left-hand side, a member of the distillery team will welcome you upon arrival.

Dogs: Whilst we love dogs, this year we'll be operating a no-dogs policy (other than assistance and support dogs) on the distillery site, both inside and outside.

Children: Children are very welcome to our Open Days and we love inspiring the next generation of farmers, distillers and fans! However, we regret that under-6s cannot come on the tour inside the still house. This includes babes-in-arms.
