Adventures Are Go!

Library Adventures is live! Which of the six themes,
chosen by children from around Kirklees will your local library be
starting off with in our year-round adventure? - Don't worry, the
themes change every 2 months so each library will have them all
over the year.

Adventurer pack and get involved!
This month we're highlighting our new booklist for the Ocean theme. It links to our catalogue so you can reserve
your top picks for free and collect them from your local library.
Books of
the Month and Double Winners!
This month we just had to celebrate two superstars of
children's literature...Outgoing Children's Laureate Joseph Coelho,
pictured here at the 2024 Yoto Carnegie Awards accepting his award
for children's writing (making him the first ever Black British Author
to do so), and incoming Children's Laureate: Frank
Cottrell-Boyce...winner of the Carnegie award for writing (in 2004
for his debut novel, Millions).
"The Boy Lost in the Maze" by Joseph Coelho
is a spellbinding novel told in poems, blending the ancient legend
of the Minotaur with the quest of a modern-day teenage boy to find
his biological father. It's ideal for teens and can be borrowed from
our libraries in person or as a digital copy on Libby or Overdrive.
You can listen to Frank Cottrell-Boyce's
"Millions" for free on Libby or Overdrive, or
borrow a paper copy from our libraries.
It's a story about a one-in-a-million chance. A bag
crammed with cash comes tumbling out of the air and lands right at
Damian's feet. Suddenly the Cunningham brothers are rich. Very
rich. They can buy anything they want. There's just one problem —
they have only seventeen days to spend all the money before it
becomes worthless. And the crooks who stole the cash in the first
place are closing in — fast.
A funny, brilliantly clever and utterly thrilling
debut novel that is, quite simply, unforgettable.
Podcast
Frank Cottrell-Boyce also has an awesome
children's book podcast which he presents alongside Nadia Shireen
(author of the Grimwood series) . As you might imagine, it's not
your everyday podcast! Frank and Nadia are shipwrecked on a desert
island with only a pair of hammocks, a pile of children's books and
the world's greatest ukulele band to keep the busy!

BRIT Award winner Tom Walker to perform free gig in Huddersfield this weekend
Head down to St.George’s Square, Huddersfield this Saturday to watch BRIT Award winner Tom Walker perform a free gig.
When to see Tom Walker perform
This Saturday 20 July at 11am and 1pm – Tom will perform his 30-minute set twice.
St George’s Square, a vibrant public event space with a backdrop of stunning architecture, will provide the perfect setting for the multi-platinum selling pop star, whose hits include ‘Leave a Light On’ and ‘Just You and I’.
Tom’s Towns initiative sees the singer visit various locations across the UK to connect with his fans, engage with local buskers and musicians, and visit independent businesses. When Tom asked his fans for suggestions on where to visit next, Huddersfield was a popular choice.
The entire event will also be live streamed on TikTok, showcasing the best of what Huddersfield has to offer to a wider audience.
Kirklees Council are supporting the event and are delighted to be welcoming Tom to the town.
Kirklees Council Leader, Councillor Carole Pattison said:
“It’s very exciting that our community can enjoy two free performances from a Brit award winning star in the heart of Huddersfield. I’m delighted that Tom has chosen to visit Kirklees and highlight all there is to love about our area.”
Scottish singer-songwriter Tom, who triumphed as the Best Breakthrough Act at the 2019 Brit Awards and had a number one selling album, ‘What a Time to be Alive’, has a special connection with Yorkshire, expressing his fondness, “People up north are very lovely, my wife Annie is from Huddersfield, and so I love Yorkshire.”
Tom’s new single ‘Holy Ghost’ was released on Friday 19 July, a love song that was inspired by his Huddersfield-born wife Annie.
Tom Walker will perform his 30-minute set twice on Saturday 20 July, at 11 am and 1 pm, at St George’s Square, Huddersfield, HD1 1JB.

A ROYAL TUDOR BED AND A
NORTHERN ROGUE
15.08.24 - 11.09.24
In our upcoming
exhibition, we will be displaying the original marriage bed made
for Henry VII (the first Tudor King) and Elizabeth of York, as
well as an infamous forgery!
A Royal Tudor Bed and a
Northern Rogue will be hosted at Manchester Cathedral from Tuesday 2 July –
Thursday 11 August and Chetham’s Library from Thursday 15
August – Wednesday 11 September.
The bed is a hugely
important piece of history as it marks the end of the War of the
Roses and the beginnings of the Tudor dynasty, and its headboard
is dense with symbols of unity, redemption, fertility, and new
beginnings.
George Shaw, a ‘rogue’
from Saddleworth, was fascinated by medieval architecture and
created mock Tudor and Elizabethan furniture for Chetham’s
Library as well as many wealthy local families. Shaw created a
replica of the Tudor marriage bed, which will also be on display
as part of the exhibition.

Dr Chris Reedman and Sam Scriven are co-authors on a recent

Spyway Dinosaur Footprints
Nestled in the picturesque Worth Matravers, within a
stone's throw of the Jurassic Coast, is the Spyway Dinosaur
Footprints. Situated alongside a working quarry and easily accessible
from the Priest's Way walking path, evidence of dinosaurs roaming the
land some 145 million years ago can be found.
Visiting the footprints is a journey through time,
back to when this part of the world was covered by swamps, lagoons,
and ancient rivers, that were inhabited by
dinosaurs! There are more than 100 dinosaur
footprints preserved in the quarry site, which were made by giant
sauropod dinosaurs, most likely brachiosaurs.
Find out more about how to get
to explore the Spyway dinsoaur footprints and surrounding areas on
