JazzLeeds kicks off the year with the Edison Herbert Quartet on Sunday 14th January 1.30-4pm. Edison Herbert is a Leeds favourite. He plays from the heart, likes to mix things up, blending standards with his own compositions. His Quartet has a reputation for their engaging grooves, sensitive ballads & for shedding fresh light on the familiar. Doors 1pm. £12/10 concessions. Under 16s free.

Also on Sunday 14th January, 7pm, test your knowledge in a relaxed atmosphere at the Sunday Quiz, a great way to end the weekend with family and friends. £5 per team entry. 7pm start. With prizes.

On Wednesday 17th January, 6-7.15pm, Rush Hour Jazz – Ron Burnett. Cafe Scientifique – Concrete also on Wednesday 17th January, at 8pm. When the RAAC scandal led the news a few months ago, Phil Purnell was widely quoted in the media. He is Professor of Materials and Structures at Leeds University and he will unravel the science behind concrete and why RAAC is now causing such a problem. Hat Donations.

On Thursday 18th January, 7.30pm,  Screen Seven returns in a new monthly slot, opening with the blockbuster and Golden Globe winner, Oppenheimer. Rounding off the week and bringing light to a grey month, Saturday 20th January 8pm, Seven is proud to present Glastonbury favourite,  Mik Artistik’s Ego Trip. If you’ve never seen one of Mik’s show before, then expect the unexpected. It’s an incredibly daft, joyful, and sometimes poignant affair, as Mik tumbles around the stage, whilst the elegant engine room of Jonny Flockton & Gregg hold down the melodies. £16 advance / £18 on the door.

Where the event is ticketed, tickets are available at TicketSource via www.sevenleeds.co.uk  We  look forward to seeing you at Seven very soon. Every £ spent at Seven helps support high quality arts in a local setting.

Library Adventures - 10th January 2024

Happy New Year!

Pictures of different family groups reading together

At the start of 2024, when, let's be frank, it's pretty grey and soggy out there, what better time to set yourselves some New Year's Reading Resolutions!? You could sit down with the kids and work some out together. Remember to lead by example, it's the best way to create young readers!

Nothing too strenuous, or to spoil the fun, but why not set yourself some achievable goals...a page a day, a chapter a day, 10 or 15 minutes or even an hour a day? How about a book a month, a week, a book a day for all you bookworms out there! Whatever works for you and your lifestyle.

Maybe your goal is to read to/with your children every day or maybe you are starting on your reading journey yourself- you are never too old to learn and we have loads of helpful books in the library. We also have a selection of picture books with no words, so there are no barriers to storytelling even if reading is tricky, or you are learning English or your eyesight isn't great. We even have eBooks where you can change the font size and background colours to help and eAudio books where you can all snuggle down as a family and enjoy the story together!

Reading for pleasure, whether it be fiction, non-fiction, paper books, eBooks, eAudio, magazines, newspapers or online articles, has been proven to reduce anxiety, boost mood and empathy  and build social skills. Not to mention it's basically free travel

Whatever resolution you chose, we'd love to hear about it and see pictures on our socials. You can contact us by email at lal@kirklees.gov.uk or tag us at any of the following:

Book review

Image of the front cover of Wolf Girl, showing a young girl in a wolf outfit next to a real wolf

Sophy doesn't fit in. School is a frightening place where her words get stuck and people laugh at her and talk behind her back. She has a passion though...wolves. She loves everything about them and feels happiest when dressing up as one!

Things change for Sophy when, after wearing her wolf costume to school one day, she gets transported to a magical world where she runs, plays and howls with a wolf and her cub. For the first time in her life, she has friends and is happy, this happiness gives her the courage to find her voice and fight an angry bear!

Once back in the real world Sophy uses her new confidence to join in and make friends.

This uplifting story about a child overcoming anxiety is just what we need on a chilly January day! You can borrow it online from Overdrive , through our Libby App or from our Libraries.

Another favourite book

Front cover of the book Alte Zachen, a greyscale image of a grandmother grandson walking past city towerblocks

Alte Zachen

This seemingly simple tale, about a Grandson and his Bubbe (Grandma), walking around Brooklyn and Manhattan to buy the ingredients for a Friday night dinner, is actually a complex web of memories and insights into a past life. Throughout the book, the reader grows to love the outwardly grough figure of Bubbe Rosa as we learn more about her life as a Jewish child growing up in Germany, her new life in America and, her "one that got away"... Peppered with Yiddish (A Jewish language), including the title, which means "Old Things", the book feels authentic and open, you feel part of it.

We have copies in our libraries, so come and give it a try.

Themed Collection of Books- Holocaust Memorial Day

Images of books about the Holocaust

Holocaust Memorial Day is on the 27th January each year, to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

For any teachers/home education families, these pages might be of particular interest: Holocaust Memorial Day Trust | Schools (hmd.org.uk)

In order for people to fully understand prejudice, it is important to have open conversations about it. This collection of books allows younger readers to do just that. The collection is a mix of books aimed at upper primary and secondary, and there are some ideal titles to share and discuss with an adult. Browse our eBook collection, search our online catalogue or come and see us in one of our libraries.

You can find many of Tom's books in our libraries and our eBook site.
