Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 8 January with Karen, Kathy, Michelle and Molly in attendance, Rueben and Jack having passed on their apologies.
The minutes from the last meeting were passed and discussions took place about other writers groups in the area, The Hightown Writers Group which takes place 6-8pm on a Monday at the working mens club and the new Wednesday afternoon one at Mirfield Library.
WIP updates: Karen has entered the Discoveries Prize and has been promoting her first novel. Kathy has been working on Scrivener Version 3 update, and found a writing piece called Janus which she hopes to send along for the CWG anthology. This was discussed, Janus the Roman God, and flash fiction of 500 words. Molly has typed up a poem and edited it and sent to the project manager of the British Ironworks Centre. Molly informed members about the Winter Writing Sanctuary with Beth Kempton a FB group she joined to write for 10 days over the Christmas and New Year period. There is another one she has signed up for 5 days on How to Get Published which members would be interested in hearing about once she has finished.
A writing package named Hemingway was discussed (which is free and looks for things in your writing such as passive voice, repeated phrases etc.), Stop Start Continue which has targets and websites which pay you to write for them such as Medium (put your stuff up there and get a penny short) Similie. This is different to Wattpad where you can put up your work to get free feedback from readers.
CW comps/workshops/events: Mark Connors (who you can find on Facebook) is running both a course and a workshop in January via his Yaffle’s Nest. The What is Prose Poetry course starts Monday 15 January between 6.30pm and 9pm and there are only a few places left (message Mark or Gill Connors on Facebook if interested). The workshop Poetry Competition Tips is on Wednesday 17 January from 6.30-9pm and costs £20 and again, please contact Mark or Gill if interested as places usually sell out.
Writing plans: Karen will be working on editing the first draft of the sequel to Christmas Evie. Michelle will be working a themed 'new beginnings' poem. Molly may apply for the MA and finish the Winter Writing Sanctuary. Kathy will work on a 'new beginnings' theme prompt for a poem.
Feedback sessions: Molly shared her excellent poems Knife Angel, about the amnesty on knives, and The Bereavement Room a beautifully dark, meaningful and layered poem which led to a discussion about grief.
We then had a discussion about writing intentions, rather than resolutions, and came up with things like being more organised in keeping our writing files on our laptops.
The next meeting is scheduled for Monday 22 January, where new members are always welcome, and fortnightly thereafter.
