Dear
Reader,
|
‘Do you have, like, normal tea? And perhaps a biscuit? Or even a piece of
bread. Do you eat bread?’ asked my very friendly, yet exhausted
and obviously exasperated plumber as he wrangled to fix the
dripping loo. Good questions. Tea? Yes, if Clipper Breakfast Tea
counts (trusted because it’s organic and doesn’t use plastic in
its bags). Biscuits, a definite no (as I’d have eaten them all).
And bread. Does a hard end of artisan sourdough count? It brought
me up sharp though, as I obviously give off the air of someone
who doesn’t do PG Tips, eat biscuits or deign to have a piece of
bread enter my mouth. In other words my signals speak of a
middle-class, conscious-minded woman who doesn’t want to get fat. A
trope, no less. But I owned it, made the organic tea (with two
sugars), toasted the sourdough, then sat on the floor with him as
he worked and we both fantasised about winning the lottery – and
we laughed. Preconceptions can always be broken through
conversation. We could do with more of it.
Have a great week.

The Reusable Bottle
Conundrum
|
Making eco chic and desirable is part of our
mission at C&TH, but what happens when that leads to
overconsumption? Cue, the Stanley bottle, which has become so cool that hardcore fans
are filling their cabinets with a rainbow of different shades.
Replacing one problem with another greenwashed one is not the answer,
friends.
