Our unmissable new exhibition opens on Saturday 12 February at the National Museum of Scotland. Learn about the making of Audubon’s Birds of America, one of the rarest and most coveted books in the world, in this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition.

Around 1820, naturalist John James Audubon declared his intention to paint every bird species in North America. The result of this ambition was Birds of America, published between 1827 and 1838, and featuring 435 life-size, hand-coloured prints. The book’s large size (almost 1m high) and its publication as a series of folios has resulted in very few complete volumes remaining to this day.

See a rare bound copy of the book alongside 46 original, unbound prints, as well as taxidermy specimens showing the accurate life-size rendering of Audubon’s paintings. Discover Edinburgh's role in the development of the book and consider both Audubon’s complex and problematic story, as well as the conservation lessons we can learn from his publication.

Wilderness Ireland

Uniquely Irish

Ireland has long been known for our pubs, whiskey and Guinness, our stories of giants and fairies, good old St Patrick, shamrocks and all things green.

It is a place of friendly locals, warm hospitality, stunning landscapes and thudering coastlines. This is an island full of fascinating folklore, amazing authors, playwrights and poets, and home to supurb artists and craftspeople. Rainbows and sheep, mountains and coasts, pubs, whiskeys and craft beer and traditonal music - it's all here. For such a small island, Ireland has had a big impact.

To put it lightly, Ireland is our absolute favourite place on the planet and we hope to welcome you here again once it's safe to do so.

Slainte!

Best Wishes,

Louise
