IVE newsletters

Here are the latest newsletters for my followers to peruse:

Welcome to our monthly newsletter for January 2022, sharing news and events from our Bridge programme and across IVE – including opportunities, resources and funding for the education and cultural sectors. This month, we're celebrating creativity in the home.

Creativity in the home

Creativity is an important part of home life and encompasses the ability to discover new and original ideas, connections, and solutions to problems. An act of creativity can be grand and inspiring, such as crafting a beautiful painting or designing an innovative company. But an idea need not be artistic or world-changing to count as creative. Life requires daily acts of ingenuity and novel workarounds; in this sense, almost everyone possesses some amount of creativity. Being creative at home can lead to stability, deeper connections, enhanced communication, and high levels of joy. Parents and carers who practice creative thinking show kids the importance of thinking outside of the box, how to complete tasks, and how to appreciate the beauty and diversity in the world.

Arts Award Discover at Home – inspiring young people during lockdown

With a family learning focus, we set out to support parents, carers and children to engage with the Arts Award Discover at Home programme. Working with regional artists, we designed a new logbook and range of online and video resources. Young people across Yorkshire delighted in a variety of remote, creative, certificated activities. Read case study here.

Arts Award Activity Videos

Originally created to support families completing Arts Award Discover at Home Award, we commissioned talented local artists to create a series of fun, accessible and interactive videos which explore a whole range of different art forms and exciting creative ideas. The activities have been inspired by the environment, nature and to enhance emotional wellbeing. Many also celebrate the rich, cultural diversity of our region. They're an excellent support for Arts Award Discover level. View videos here.

Bags of Creativity for children and young people

We've delivered 9,000 bags filled with creative activities and inspiring materials to children and young people across Yorkshire and the Humber. Last summer, we found enough arts and crafts materials to create another 350 bags, which were delivered to five foodbanks across the region. Families were able to pick up bags full of arts and crafts materials, along with their food supplies, to enjoy in their homes. Read more here.

IVE has provided this e-newsletter in its capacity as the Bridge Organisation for Yorkshire and the Humber, supporting Arts Council England’s goal that Every child and young person has the opportunity to experience the richness of the arts. We will achieve this by strengthening the connections between the worlds of schools & education and of arts & culture. IVE is an independent educational trust dedicated to preparing young people to face the future with creativity and self-belief.

Welcome to our monthly newsletter for December 2021, sharing news and events from our Bridge programme and across IVE – including opportunities, resources and funding for the education and cultural sectors. This month, we're celebrating our achievements in 2021.

Year in review from CEO Rosi Lister

2021 has had its challenges. We, like many other organisations needed to tighten our belts and watch our charitable reserves. An exercise that, thanks to colleagues, has worked out well and as the year draws to a close opportunities are once more on the rise: A new industry sponsor to support our Applied Creativity Labs for schools, which have become a major IVE success story. A new private sector client for our Creative Leadership training and an opportunity to apply to the Arts Council England for extension funding which will enable us to continue to provide our Bridge role and support our Local Cultural Education Partnerships for another year. Our Ignite Yorkshire heritage youth engagement programme has gone from strength to strength, being nominated for two awards and achieving national acclaim from the Association of Heritage Interpreters.

Behind the scenes, the year has also been spent developing our new strategic plan, which many of you have helped us with and I am very grateful to you. We will be launching this strategy in the New Year in preparation for our 25th anniversary at the beginning of April. It is a strategy for change and transition from our Bridge role, a strategy we believe is forward thinking and inspirational.

Bridge highlights 2021

Our Bridge team have supported 243 schools and 311 arts and culture organisations in Yorkshire and the Humber through professional development, partnerships, micro-commissions and 1-2-1 support.

In the past twelve months, we’ve welcomed new staff and associates to our Bridge team. We’ve expanded our reach into Hull and the Humber by hiring a Cultural Education Manager to champion that area. We have also been joined by new associates for North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire to help us build more links within the region. Our team continues to go from strength to strength with the wealth of knowledge and expertise they bring to our programme. Read Bridge highlights 2021 here.

Funding for Schools: unlocking small grants know-how to enrich learning

Welcome to our monthly newsletter for November 2021, sharing news and events from our Bridge programme and across IVE – including opportunities, resources and funding for the education and cultural sectors. To celebrate Artsmark's 20th anniversary and Artsmark Celebration Week, our theme this month is Embedding Creativity into the Curriculum.

As children, we’re born with wild and inventive imaginations. But as we get older that creativity dwindles, and by adulthood, the number of creative geniuses drops to an astonishingly low average. Which begs the question: does school kill creativity?

Traditional teaching methods, like testing and memorisation, are counterproductive to creativity. Education is not the same as learning, learning requires engagement and sparked curiosity. Injecting creativity into the classroom can really transform the way young people learn, and how they apply creative thinking skills in their real life. In this edition we have taken a real focus on how creativity, culture and arts are being embedded into the curriculum.

Artsmark School Spotlight: Beck Primary School

Beck Primary School is a very large, 3 form entry school, sitting in the heart of a large council estate in North East Sheffield. It’s a vibrant, busy school with a high percentage of pupils (more than 50%) with pupil premium. The centre of the city is a forty-five-minute bus journey away, and combined with parents’ socio-economic deprivation, very few pupils engage in external cultural activities. Hear from Rebecca Stroud at Beck Primary School, and how their school aimed to plug this cultural capital gap. Read guest blog here.

Welcome to our monthly newsletter for October 2021, sharing news and events from our Bridge programme and across IVE – including opportunities, resources and funding for the education and cultural sectors. This month, we're focusing on Diversity and Inclusion.

THE FUTURE OF INCLUSION

Creativity has the power to do amazing things. It has the power to change the world, if we let it. But creativity is nothing without diversity and inclusion. Unless we celebrate difference in all its forms, we will carry on doing the same old things, in the same old ways.

INCLUSIVITY AND RELEVANCE, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU?

“Achieving a fair and accessible cultural sector, which is better placed to realise its creative ambition by drawing on talent from all our communities”, is a key principle being worked towards for many organisations in the creative sector today. For IVE this means developing the potential of diverse groups of young people, and building creative and inclusive workplaces. We are supporting education, creative and community sectors to develop their understanding, expertise and motivation to reach those underrepresented groups in our region. We are also working with leading companies from across the region to help them embed inclusion within cultures, values and practice.

You can follow Schools of Sanctuary on Twitter and Facebook

Sharing hundreds more Bags of Creativity with our region’s children and young people

Last summer, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we delivered 9,000 bags filled with creative activities and inspiring materials to children and young people across Yorkshire and the Humber. This summer, we found we had enough arts and crafts materials leftover to create another 350 bags and delivered the remaining Bags of Creativity to five foodbanks across the region. Read the full story here.
