Cleckheaton Writer's Group minutes Monday 10 January 2022

The first 2022 meeting of Cleckheaton Writers Group took place last night at Cleckheaton Libary with Alice, Gemma, Cassie, Barbara, Karen and Kathy in attendance.

The minutes from the last meeting were passed.

WIP updates and 2022 Writing Goals: Karen has had her first rejection of the year (on the 3rd) and thanks to Alice's kindness has signed up to fourteen days access to a Writing Masterclass. Her goals for this year are to finish the edit on her novel for its publication in Summer, to finish the edit on her crime novel for submission to HarperNorth and the three agents who have requested it and to finish the edit on her MG novel which was longlisted for the Guppy Open Submissions to enter into other competitions and to submit to agents. Alice has been planning her current WIP. Her goals for 2022 are to make a decision about the novel she has out on submission and see if the market changes between submissions, to finish Project Nightmare (her second MG novel) and to work on her 7-9 book series (two planned out). Gemma has been editing and her goal for 2022 is to edit book 2. Cassie has started writing a book and brought it along for feedback. Her goal for 2022 is to continue the novel. Barbara has already achieved one of her goals for 2022 in that she has bought a laptop and she will be second drafting her writing from pen/paper. Her other goal is to submit some of her work to magazines such as People's Friend or Woman's Weekly. Kathy has started another story which she sees as Festive Fluff meets A House in Time. Her 2022 goals are to continue with the new novel, to compile and send her Tobias novel for feedback and to complete her 12 Dates of Chris Moss stories (she has written 8 of 12).

This led to a discussion about beat sheets/plot planning and Alice agreed to send a basic beat sheet to all members.

Feedback Sessions: Cassie brought along the start to her new historical novel which was well received by the members. It was felt the story drew you in, contained vivid descriptions and intriguing/likeable characters, and had you asking a lot of questions which is great. Some revisions were suggested including a new first line, more use of dialogue and a change of event order. Cassie outlined where her story is set and we look forward to hearing more of this novel.

Writing Plans: Karen will complete her bullet journal with her Writing Goals for 2022 and make a start on them. Alice will outline Project Nightmare to decide if it is too dark or not. Gemma will continue editing. Cassie will write more on her WIP. Barbara will carry on with her story and start more stories. Kathy will use Scrivener to compile her Tobias novel.

Writing Challenge: January's theme is RESOLUTIONS

Date of next Meeting: Monday 24 January 5.30pm, Cleckheaton Library
