Creative Kirklees Newsletter - 11 January 2022

Good afternoon all!

Here is this week's Newsletter.  As usual we have lots for you to see and do.  If you want to escape those January blues, how about signing up to SING ON with Opera North?  This starts next Monday 17th at the Lawrence Batley Theatre.  There is nothing that lifts the soul more than a good sing!  Or maybe you would like to turn your hand to drawing and paint?

It’s not too late to grab yourself a ticket for this Wednesday’s Lunchtime Chamber Concert which will take place in Dewsbury on 19 January with Alice Zawadzki, a singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist.

We have some fantastic new opportunities for you including an open call for artists from The World Reimagined.  Applicants are invited to apply to create Globe Sculptures and bring to life the reality and impact of the transatlantic slave trade.   The open call is free to enter and all applicants will have access to masterclasses with leading artists, curators and historians.    Another great opportunity is the Let's Create Jubilee Fund which provides funding for voluntary and community organisations.  Take a look - don't miss out!

Become a Sheffield DocFest Youth Jurer is a fantastic opportunity with the Arts Council for young film enthusiasts aged 18 - 23 to get involved in.  We also have jobs and lots more on our Opportunities page.

In the news, there is an interesting read (updated on 4th January) about The Live Events Reinsurance Scheme.  This scheme supports live events across the country that are at risk of being halted or delayed due to an inability to obtain COVID-19 cancellation insurance.

We will keep in touch – sending details of more events, news and opportunities in and around Kirklees.

See you all next week!

Wilderness Ireland

Uniquely Irish

Ireland has long been known for our pubs, whiskey and Guinness, our stories of giants and fairies, good old St Patrick, shamrocks and all things green.

It is a place of friendly locals, warm hospitality, stunning landscapes and thudering coastlines. This is an island full of fascinating folklore, amazing authors, playwrights and poets, and home to supurb artists and craftspeople. Rainbows and sheep, mountains and coasts, pubs, whiskeys and craft beer and traditonal music - it's all here. For such a small island, Ireland has had a big impact.

To put it lightly, Ireland is our absolute favourite place on the planet and we hope to welcome you here again once it's safe to do so.

Slainte!

Best Wishes,

Louise

Ireland's Wild Coasts

Okay, so we know that Ireland itself is an island. But we also have dozens of lovely islands clinging to our shores.

On Irish islands, explore their rich offering of Neolithic monuments, Iron Age forts, medieval abbeys - many of which were invaded by the Vikings - manor houses, historic cottages, and more.

Islands are microcosms of culture. On Ireland’s islands, discover small communities alive with local traditions. Pick up a bit of Irish in the cosy village pub, tap your foot to the live trad music, learn how sheep are sheared or goats cheese is made, and immerse yourself in the rich heritage of the islands of Ireland.

Get inspired below for your own future adventures along Ireland's wild coasts.

Best Wishes,

Louise

a new interactive online experience - tomorrow!

A Bit Lit
Online via Zoom

Saturday 15th January at 4pm - 6pm GMT
£15 per household

Theatre lovers and history buffs everywhere are invited to join us for A Day Out at Shakespeare’s Theatre, a new interactive online experience from digital learning platform A Bit Lit.

There’s nothing dry and dusty about this history lesson, which gives you the opportunity to imagine yourself as a theatre producer in the 1600s, diving into the decisions and dilemmas you might have faced while taking in the sights, sounds and even smells of the day.

It draws together talents from the worlds of theatre and academia including Simon Russell Beale, Emma Smith and an improv troupe who’ll perform the play you produce, to take learning about Shakespeare’s theatre to a new, more immersive level.

Access for all is built into the platform and the cast includes actors using sign language for D/deaf participants as well as other features to ensure anyone who wants to be involved can be!

So join us for a two-hour experience this Saturday that is informative and as authentic as it’s possible to be over Zoom.

There may even be bears…
