Ireland's Natural
Phenomena

You can’t get much wilder than the thousands of strange basalt
columns of the Giant’s Causeway jutting out the Causeway Coast. Sea
stacks, towering columns and rocky coves meander across Ireland’s
northern coasts.
On the west coast, millions of people come to admire our beautiful
cliffs - with good reason. The sheer precipices of the Cliffs of
Moher are perhaps the most famed cliffs in the world (and also the
stand-end for the Cliffs of Insanity for the cult classic The
Princess Bride!) Further north, we have even wilder cliffs - those at
Slieve League, which are actually three times the height of the
Cliffs of Moher.
The lunar-like exposed limestone landscape is so otherworldly that
it’s said to have inspired J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth on a trip to
Ireland.
And off the coast of the southwest are the Skellig islands, two
jagged rock pinnacles rising dramatically from the sea. So remote
they are that for centuries, they were home to monks isolating
themselves from the rest of the world.

Travelling through Ireland sometimes feels like visiting another
world. So fantastical is Ireland that it has inspired countless
stories, from folklore to fantasy novels and TV shows.
Game of Thrones has filmed countless scenes here, from castles to
caves to cliffs all over Northern Ireland. CS Lewis, author of
childhood classic The Chronicles of Narnia, grew up near Belfast with
the Causeway Coast and the Mourne Mountains his playground - and he
has said that he was inspired by all he saw to create the world of
Narnia. JRR Tolkien is said to have been inspired by visits to
Ireland, particularly the desolate lunar Burren landscape of County
Clare, while writing the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It’s said too
that the name for Gollum came from his visit to Pollnagollum cave,
which made a strange noise that resembles the character’s signature
sound.
Zipping into the world of scifi, Star Wars has commandeered the
Skellig Islands and rural parts of Kerry, Clare and Donegal to film
iconic Star Wars scenes (notably, Luke’s world’s-end hideout).
The island also has a rich quiltwork of folklore and mythology, from
warring giants to mermaids and selkies, humans turned to swans,
fairies from the other world, tragic lovers chased across the island
and battles fought over magical bulls.
Let Ireland inspire you….

Okay, so we know that Ireland itself is an island. But we also have
dozens of lovely islands clinging to our shores.
On Irish islands, explore their rich offering of Neolithic monuments,
Iron Age forts, medieval abbeys - many of which were invaded by the
Vikings - manor houses, historic cottages, and more.
Islands are microcosms of culture. On Ireland’s islands, discover
small communities alive with local traditions. Pick up a bit of Irish
in the cosy village pub, tap your foot to the live trad music, learn
how sheep are sheared or goats cheese is made, and immerse yourself
in the rich heritage of the islands of Ireland.
Get inspired below for your own future adventures along Ireland's
wild coasts.
