Creative Kirklees Newsletter 25 February 2022

We are looking ahead a bit in this week’s newsletter as we have two amazing festivals coming up over the next few months.

Just around the corner in February is the Mrs Sunderland Festival - one of the largest festivals of music, speech and drama in the country. From 16 – 26 February the festival offers over 140 classes for piano, instrumental, vocal, choirs and speech and drama and to get you warmed up there is an adult singing workshop on 6 February - Come and Sing Faure's Requiem Adult Singing Workshop.

It’s never too early to get your tickets for the Huddersfield Literature Festival which takes place in March – you can see their events on Creative Kirklees and the festival’s website. The festival offers a diverse programme of author talks, workshops, discussion topics, performance poetry, multi-arts performances, wellbeing projects, events for young people and family friendly events.

Back to January – if you’re thinking about applying for funding to the Let’s Create Jubilee Fund the deadline for Kirklees is 31 January. Voluntary and community organisations can apply for creative and cultural activities as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations taking place in June 2022.

There’s plenty more going on over the next week on Creative Kirklees – whether it’s online or in person - take a look.

The Holocaust and genocide

Holocaust Memorial Day is One Day – 27 January – that we put aside to come together to remember, to learn about the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and the genocides that followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur, in the hope that there may be One Day in the future with no genocide. We learn more about the past, we empathise with others today, and we take action for a better future.

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2022 is One Day. There are many ways to interpret the theme, some of which can be found at: Holocaust Memorial Day Trust

Based at The University of Huddersfield The Holocaust Exhibition and Learning Centre is "An excellent exhibition which serves as a timely warning in today's times. More people need to see this moving display."

Who next logo

When children ask: “Who can I read next?” or “Who writes like my favourite author?”, the answers are here in Who Next…?  Writers of children’s fiction are listed with suggestions of other authors who write in a similar way, together with key book and series titles.

Browse:

  • in four age groups: 5-7, 8-11, 12-14 and 14+
  • by genre and theme
  • graphic novels, read out loud titles, short stories and titles for dyslexic or struggling readers
  • prize-winning children’s books
  • by country of birth of authors
  • other useful links

This is an invaluable tool to help children explore the world of reading. As the award winning author, Alan Gibbons, says “A reading child is a successful child”.

Who Next…? is compiled by two professional librarians of long experience, drawing on contributions from other librarians.

You can sign in for free with your library card number!
