Events and Opportunities from Commonword

4th January 2022

Dear Commonword writer,
Even Nostradamus would be hard pressed to predict how 2022 is going to work out. But we do have a pipeline of events and projects coming up for the new year and this newsletter gives you the details. There's plenty to watch, be inspired by and get involved in.
Happy reading!

Upcoming Events

Launch of 'SO' poetry collection by John Siddique

We are honoured to be publishing former Identity member, and renowned poet and spiritual writer, John Siddique’s new collection of poems: 'SO: Collected Works' which covers ten years of poems from John. An exploration of our relationship with the natural world, home and family history, this collection is a balm for hectic, fragmented times. The online launch will take place on Thursday 20th January at 7pm and you are all welcome to join us in this celebration.

Experience Interactive Storytelling

We will be showcasing seven Twine stories that were written as part of our British Council collaboration with creatives from Manchester, UK and Beirut, Lebanon. Biting, controversial and innovative, the stories will plunge you into a weird dystopian future where you are faced with life-and-death decisions. Choose carefully!  A big well done to the participating writers: Juice Aleem,  Ellie Andrews, Curtis Cole, Ali Al Jamri,  Xhi Ndubisi, Ashleigh Nugent and Roisin O’Callaghan.

This event is free, online and will have auto-captioning.

Workshops

The return of "Notes on a Mic Drop" & more!

It's true that the pandemic will keep our workshops online for a while yet.  But that doesn't stop us: we're planning to bring back Notes On A Mic Drop, the workshop for QTIPOC folks, including non-binary writers, as well as launching a new workshop for Global Majority playwrights (i.e., from the African, Caribbean,  South AsianSoutheast Asian, East Asian, Middle Eastern, Arabic Diasporas, as well as Indigenous communities).
Watch this space - coming to you online soon!

We have a linkup with the Legacies of Biafra exhibition in Oldham in the pipeline: a workshop of memory, conflict and survival is scheduled for the Spring of 2022 with leading writer, Jacqueline Roy.

After a year of gripping reads and stimulating discussion in 2021, Black Queer Book Club have a stellar reading list for the beginning of this year.

First up: Booker-prize winning Girl, Woman, Other by Bernadine Evaristo
February -- The Vanishing Half, by Brit Bennett
March -- The Ministry of Guidance, by Golnoosh Nour
April -- A Dutiful Boy, by Mohsin Zaidi

How to join:
If you would like to attend, please email cheryl@cultureword.org.uk or join our Facebook group by clicking here.

We will also have our regular, popular Identity black writers workshop series ongoing every Wednesday evening. Contact us to join if you wish to participate.

Crime Fiction Update

This month on Youtube we will feature a video interview with Jacqueline Roy about her new novel ‘The Gosling Girl’ which looks at the aftermath of, and the racial undercurrents around, a child killing from an unusual point of view. We also have an interview with Stephanie Scott coming up, who will be talking about her ground-breaking crime novel, ‘What’s Left of Me is Yours’, set in Japan and involving a true-crime event in which a wakaresaseya (‘breaker-upper’) agent is paid to have an affair with his client’s wife, which spirals into violence. Finally, around crime, we have an essay on location by Koushik Banerjee.

People and Places

Summer will see us bring to fruition our People and Places project which will deliver an Arts Festival in Moss Side comprising lots of different art forms and activities including, we hope, outdoor poetry sessions.

Black Writers Conference 2021

Thank You for Dreaming with Us!
A message from Commonword's Co-Artistic Director
Cheryl Martin

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who came to our National Black Writers Conference on 20th + 21st November, 2021.  It was a blast!  We had such wonderful panelists, and those in the audience were so lively, so welcoming, so supportive, it made it easy for us to create an outstanding weekend.  It was so good, we recorded all the panels and readings, and they will be available in a few weeks on our website. This year people came from Trinidad to India, Berlin to Bolton, from the USA to Scotland – and we want to reach many more places and people over the next two years, for when our next conference takes place in 2023. So proud of all our artists and panellists.

Conference Competition Winners

Cultureword ran two competitions as part of this year's Black Writers Conference: Going Digital & We Want to Dream. The creativity and quality of the submissions we received was incredible. We hope you enjoy watching the winning films below.

Going Digital

Artists explored the potential of digital technology as a medium for telling stories, conveying emotion and context, whilst capturing viewers imaginations.

'I Know this Face' by Lucy Sheen

'she_asks_a_dying_god' by Xhi Ndubisi
An Instagram story told across nine posts using video, spoken word and photography

'Drapetomania- Lucid in a Mad World' by Princess Arinola Adegbite

We Want to Dream

Writers composed a piece on the Black Writers Conference theme 'We Want to Dream', which itself was inspired by Martin Luther King Jr's 'I Have a Dream' speech delivered almost 60 years ago.

The results? Stunning poetry conveying our modern anxieties and hopes for our future.

From l-r: Jane Adelakun (1st Prize), Muli Amaye (2nd Prize), Alexandra Stewart (3rd Prize)

Events and Opportunities from Commonword

May 2021

Message from our Artistic Director

Dear Commonword Writer,

We’re back! Like so many of us, Commonword’s had to take a few months during this pandemic moment to take care of our staff, find new ways to work and to support our many, many writers, both new to the game and old hands.

We’ve missed seeing you in person in our workshops and readings and book launches. But we’ve still been here, online, keeping our workshops going; launching new collections like Shots in the Dark II, a black crime writing anthology; Loose Connections, an aural collection from Identity, our long-running black writers’ workshop; launching our 40-years-strong Archive, with its map of Manchester writing featured in this newsletter; a novelists’ group focussed on getting more black writers published;  hosting Queer Black Book Club and its fun, incisive sessions on classic and brand-new queer black writing.

You can see how to join Identity and Queer Black Book Club in this newsletter, and watch this space for details of how to join the novelists’ group soon.

The Newsletter is back!  And Commonword has never really been away.

All the best,
Cheryl Martin
Co-Artistic Director

Commonword Cultureword has worked with hundreds of Manchester’s writers since our founding in 1977. You can explore the literature that has taken roots and writers who have flourished across the city in our Digital Literature Map. Each point on the map has been chosen based on references to the location within a text, where the writer composed a piece or a location in Manchester evoked by a piece.

Commonword Picture Book Project up and running

Commonword's Picture Book Project with Hachette is now up and running.
