AUTUMN SHOWS

A muse, a miner, a magician and more.

As the nights draw in, why not head down to The Holbeck for a refreshing drink, an excellent snack and some cracking entertainment?

We are welcoming some familiar friends as well as new faces to perform, all promising to grip you in their own way.

Michael Wolf returns with 'It's About Time', a night of jaw-dropping magic and time-travelling fun. And our pals RashDash bring two-hander cabaret 'Look At Me Don't Look At Me' about love, art and legacy.

Ray Castleton's "pitch-perfect" one man show 'Without Malice or Ill Will' comes to the club for the first time, alongside award-winning Katie O'Brien's fresh, funny and taboo-smashing one woman 'Catch 22'.

'Sirens, Men and Crabs' is a surreal blend of clown and dark comedy turning Ancient Greece upside down. Whilst 'Planet LOL' will have you howling again, this time about a whole society living on a planet made of solid gold.

Book now as spaces are limited and this line-up is not to be missed.

See you soon!

This is the story of Carmen. A woman fighting for her liberty in a man's world. Will she survive? Join us to find out...

All you need to know about Carmen...

Carmen in a nutshell

Carmen is the star attraction of a burlesque club, but her 'femme fatale' image is merely a performance. She longs to show Don José her real self, but is he smitten with Carmen the woman, or just her act?

Discover more about the concept, the opera's shocking history and more in our quick introductory guide...

Musical highlights

Carmen features some of the most famous music in all opera, including the Habanera, Carmen's sultry entrance solo, and the Toreador Song, where rodeo rider Escamillo celebrates fame and victory.

We've put together a Spotify playlist of some of the hit tunes...

Explore the story

We're thrilled to welcome an international cast including Chrystal E. Williams, who makes her Opera North debut as temptress Carmen, and audience favourite Rafael Rojas as corporal Don José. Find out what happens when their worlds collide...

Lot's going on in your libraries.....

Welcome Back

Most libraries are now open for customer browsing and use of computers.

Since 19th July there are no limits on as to how long people are allowed to stay in a library. We still have the NHS Track and Trace QR code displayed in Libraries to enable customers to scan when they enter the Library.

We strongly recommend that customers continue to wear a face mask whilst in the Library. Computers can be accessed without pre booking a session. To allow distance between PC’s, we have reduced the numbers available.

There is more news about events and activities in this newsletter.

The novels that shaped our world: writing workshop with Gill Lambert

Join Gill Lambert in this free workshop as we look at some of the themes within Angela Carter's 'Nights at the Circus' especially love, marriage, feminism, magic and history.

Using Carter's text as well as others to inform your own writing and respond in a variety of ways to reflect on the themes.

In the second half of the day will examine how we can use history and historical figures to write about the world we live in today and help us to tackle some of the problems and issues we face in our modern world.

Gill Lambert is a poet and facilitator from West Yorkshire. Her work is widely published, her first collection 'Tadaima' was published in 2019 by Yaffle and she is working on her second collection and a novel. Gill is an experienced workshop facilitator and has worked with many different groups in various settings.

This workshop is for adults.

The novels that shaped our world. A talk and hand-casting workshop with aerialist Rebecca Truman

To celebrate Angela Carter's 'Nights at the Circus', we are hosting a day with trapeze artist, costume designer and artist Rebecca Truman. Rebecca will talk about being an aerialist and costume designer (for circus) and about all aspects of circus lifestyle. There will be costumes and ropes to feel and discuss. Rebecca will also read from her book 'Aerialist'.

After lunch there will be a life-casting workshop and you will get to take something really special home. Hand casting captures so much about someone's life-style and what they have done and in Rebecca's case her hands were callused and strong from aerial work.

Free event.

Shipley Library. Sat 25 Sep 2021, 10:00AM

Your wellbeing matters - financial wellbeing

It might seem strange to be talking about finances under the 'wellbeing' topic - but did you know that worrying about money is the biggest cause of stress for working people in the UK?

What is more, a survey by the Office of National Statistics, highlighted that nearly a quarter of people say their household finances have been impacted by the pandemic and over one third expect their finances to get worse.

The knock-on effects of the pandemic have overwhelmed many, with unexpected financial pressures that may be causing anxiety and impacting on overall health and wellbeing. The stigma and silence that surrounds financial issues just makes things even more difficult. Bringing the issue out into the open means you or people around you will be more likely to seek support early.

The services and resources below can help you or your loved ones find the expert confidential support and advice you need to maintain control over your financial situation and take action around managing debt.
Citizens Advice Bureau – (CAB) - For help with understanding how things like credit or mortgages work, and helping people deal with debt problems, including how to avoid losing your home through debt.
Credit Union Bradford District BDCU - The Credit Union is a friendly alternative to high street banks and loans. Contact the BDCU Financial Inclusion officer for more information - ian.brewer@bdcu.co.uk.
Money Helper - Free and impartial help with money, backed by the government. Provides a host of information and can direct you to services in your locality - debt advice locator tool. You can also talk to someone at online or by phone on 0800 138 7777.
Financial wellbeing advice from the NHS – a range of links and support for coping with financial worries.
Christians Against Poverty – (CAP) - a completely free expert debt help service that is available to anyone. They're a charity that help people from all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities and faiths. They help people who feel trapped in debt, providing support all the way to becoming debt free. For help call 0800 328 0006. More information is available on the I want help page – and this also includes information about the Fresh Start and Life Skills support groups.
