Children's Lit Community Stays Positive Private equity firms continue to invest in the educational
publishing space, with Francisco

Children's Institute 9 closed on a
hopeful note, as conference-goers reflected on a year marked by
resilience and creative problem-solving. After an up week, print book
sales dropped again last week as nonfiction sales continue to struggle.
PW talked with two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Louise Erdrich
and bestselling fraternal author duo Lee and Andrew
Child about their new books. The New Yorker takes a look at
the state of
library e-book lending in a world of apps and increasing corporate
ownership over the products libraries lend. Talking Influence lays out
how social
media is reinventing the book club. And the historian Robert

Cooking and Booking If you're in the market for a new cookbook, look no further:
we've spotlighted the biggest
new titles coming this season. Minnesota-based independent
publisher Milkweed Editions has announced
a disability-focused book series that will debut in April. Hachette’s
acquisition of Workman is only the latest—albeit the largest—in a decade-long
acquisition spree, as the Big Five continue to scoop up smaller
publishing operations. Plus, information technology company and learning
platform Course Hero has acquired Houghton
Miffin Harcourt's CliffsNotes nearly a decade after HMH acquired
it from Wiley. As ethical debates over the buying and selling of advance
copies heat up, the Guardian reports that uncorrected proofs of Sally
Rooney’s upcoming novel fetched
hundreds of dollars on eBay and Depop. Margaret Truman’s
bestselling, 32-part Capital Crimes book series is slated to
be adapted into a TV series, Deadline reports. And
children's author and illustrator Jill Murphy has died at 72,
while Lies My Teacher Told Me author James W. Loewen has died at 79. First Courses: Cookbooks 2021 Milkweed Editions Announces Disability-Focused

For the Love of Books More than 250 bookstores around the country will
participate in Bookstore Romance Day tomorrow, and the event,
which started in 2019, continues to grow. In this week’s magazine, we profiled the
great Diane Williams and rounded up the best books
on book publishing. A bomb threat near the Library of Congress
yesterday prompted evacuations of
the building and several other government facilities, the New
York Times reports. Amazon will open large
retail locations akin to department stores, according to the Wall
Street Journal, expanding its bricks-and-mortar footprint. Walter Mosley will pen a
six-issue run on Marvel's The Thing this fall, even as Vice
reports that most writers and artists in comics can't make
money on the medium. Forbes has named Penguin Random House
US CEO Madeline McIntosh one of its 50
women visionaries over 50. And Sweet Diversity author

Re: Stacks Another week, another dip in
print book sales compared to last year, although sales grew
compared to recent weeks. At Substack, Anand Giridharadas will serialize
chapters of his 2014 book The True American, as more and
more authors experiment with the newsletter platform as a way of distributing
and promoting their books. Quarto is restructuring
its leadership as COO Ken Fund prepares to retire this November.
One of the police officers who shot Breonna Taylor has returned

Action-Packed Digital Developments How will Maryland's new e-book law change the
marketplace? The answer remains to be seen. DC Comics is
partnering with South Korea's Webtoon on a new slate of
superhero webcomics—big news for the growing Korean webcomics
market. Our latest School and Library Spotlight highlights a growing slate of
STEM- and
STEAM-centric biographies for children. Uncorrected,
"not-for-sale" advance copies of popular novels by the likes of
Sally Rooney and J.K. Rowling have become
hot commodities to the dismay of many authors, the Wall Street
Journal reports. Pearson has been fined
$1 million by the SEC, which says that the educational publisher
misled its investors over the extent of a 2018 data breach, according to Computer
Weekly. Despite a ban on book advances in the U.S. House of
Representatives, Forbes reports that Trump's former
doctor-turned-congressman received a
sizable advance from Post Hill just before his swearing-in. Bustle
considers how the
pandemic has upended book tours and what post-pandemic book

comparison with last year. Penguin Random House and Amanda Gorman are partnering on

Fighting for Freedom of Speech Numerous governments around the world have been targeting
LGBTQ and dissident groups, curtailing freedom of speech and
exercising censorship, but many being attacked are fighting back. A case in
point: the government of Belarus just dissolved the
local branch of PEN after the organization reported hundreds of
human rights abuses, and the international community is rallying to PEN
Belarus's aid. In the U.S., lawyers for the Internet Archive are demanding a
decade of sales records for all books from a quartet of publishers
in their court battle over fair use. Summer isn’t over yet and we’ve got a roundup of
August book club picks for late beach reading. Marcel Dekker,
publisher of scientific, technical, and medical books and journals, has died,
at age 91. Comic book creators are using
Substack to connect directly with fans. Finally, in the U.K.,
after Kate Clanchy's Orwell Prize-winning memoir of life as a teacher was
heavily criticized for its “racialized stereotypes,” the publisher, Picador,
apologized and confirmed that
the book will be rewritten. Censorship on the Rise Worldwide Internet Archive Seeking 10 Years of Publisher
