Children's Lit Community Stays Positive

Private equity firms continue to invest in the educational publishing space, with Francisco Partners scooping up Follett School Solutions this week. Children's Institute 9 closed on a hopeful note, as conference-goers reflected on a year marked by resilience and creative problem-solving. After an up week, print book sales dropped again last week as nonfiction sales continue to struggle. PW talked with two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Louise Erdrich and bestselling fraternal author duo Lee and Andrew Child about their new books. The New Yorker takes a look at the state of library e-book lending in a world of apps and increasing corporate ownership over the products libraries lend. Talking Influence lays out how social media is reinventing the book club. And the historian Robert Middlekauff has died at 91.

PRH Pops Off in First Half

It was a big first half of the year for Penguin Random House, where profits were up 55%. Booker Prize–winning author Marlon James will return to bookshelves in February with the second installment of his Dark Star trilogy, and a new short story collection starring Agatha Christie's Miss Marple is coming next September from William Morrow. PW talked with The Loneliest Americans author Jay Caspian Kang about Asian American assimilation and alienation. The New York Times reports on the disputes over race, culture, and inclusion that are roiling literary organizations such as the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and Romance Writers of America. Call it the K-pop effect: a book that has been out of print for 20 years soared to the top of the Korean bestseller list after a member of the band BTS was seen reading it, according to UPI. According to research by the Publishers Association, proposed changes to U.K. copyright law could put 64% of publisher revenue at risk, the Bookseller reports. And Erika Seyfried, v-p and director of digital strategy and consumer engagement at Penguin Random House, has died tragically at 36.

A Literary Cornucopia

Check out our picks for the 20 biggest and most exciting indie books publishing this fall, including titles from Anne Carson, Maggie Nelson, and Alice Walker. After passing a $3.5 trillion budget bill last Tuesday, legislators have two weeks to earmark how that money will be spent—and library advocates are moving quickly to secure funds. Business is booming for Australian online book retailer Booktopia, which saw sales rise 35% in the 2021 fiscal year. The Republic of Consciousness Prize for small presses, awarded in the U.K. since 2017, has launched in North America. Bleak House, one of Hong Kong's last independent English-language bookstores, will close in October, as the owners reluctantly leave Hong Kong amid political turmoil. And Hilary Mantel has joined a chorus of British writers who fear the book industry may collapse should proposed post-Brexit changes to copyright rules go ahead.

Bookselling News Bonanza

There's a whole lot going on in the world of bookselling. For one, booksellers are not happy about a just-announced price hike on Amanda Gorman's forthcoming poetry collection, which was made months after booksellers began accepting pre-orders. (PRH has since pledged to honor the original price for all pre-ordered copies.) Barnes & Noble, on the other hand, is beaming: after Covid retail restrictions stymied sales, the bookseller is seeing renewed success thanks in part to renovations made during lockdowns. Print book sales were up last week following a nearly month-long skid—a relief for booksellers and publishers both. And New York–based bookseller McNally Jackson will launch its own reprint book line featuring titles from such authors as David Foster Wallace and Han Suyin. In other news, cocktail-focused publication Punch, which was previously owned by Penguin Random House, has joined Vox Media as a sister site to Eater. Shola Von Reinhold and Doireann Ní Ghríofa have won the £10,000 James Tait Black Prizes, the Bookseller reports. And according to the Guardian, Penguin Classics will launch a "new canon" of environmental literature in the U.K., featuring work from Rachel Carson, Amitav Ghosh, Greta Thunberg, and more.

Cooking and Booking

If you're in the market for a new cookbook, look no further: we've spotlighted the biggest new titles coming this season. Minnesota-based independent publisher Milkweed Editions has announced a disability-focused book series that will debut in April. Hachette’s acquisition of Workman is only the latest—albeit the largest—in a decade-long acquisition spree, as the Big Five continue to scoop up smaller publishing operations. Plus, information technology company and learning platform Course Hero has acquired Houghton Miffin Harcourt's CliffsNotes nearly a decade after HMH acquired it from Wiley. As ethical debates over the buying and selling of advance copies heat up, the Guardian reports that uncorrected proofs of Sally Rooney’s upcoming novel fetched hundreds of dollars on eBay and Depop. Margaret Truman’s bestselling, 32-part Capital Crimes book series is slated to be adapted into a TV series, Deadline reports. And children's author and illustrator Jill Murphy has died at 72, while Lies My Teacher Told Me author James W. Loewen has died at 79.

For the Love of Books

More than 250 bookstores around the country will participate in Bookstore Romance Day tomorrow, and the event, which started in 2019, continues to grow. In this week’s magazine, we profiled the great Diane Williams and rounded up the best books on book publishing. A bomb threat near the Library of Congress yesterday prompted evacuations of the building and several other government facilities, the New York Times reports. Amazon will open large retail locations akin to department stores, according to the Wall Street Journal, expanding its bricks-and-mortar footprint. Walter Mosley will pen a six-issue run on Marvel's The Thing this fall, even as Vice reports that most writers and artists in comics can't make money on the medium. Forbes has named Penguin Random House US CEO Madeline McIntosh one of its 50 women visionaries over 50. And Sweet Diversity author Donald Newlove has died at 93.

Re: Stacks

Another week, another dip in print book sales compared to last year, although sales grew compared to recent weeks. At Substack, Anand Giridharadas will serialize chapters of his 2014 book The True American, as more and more authors experiment with the newsletter platform as a way of distributing and promoting their books. Quarto is restructuring its leadership as COO Ken Fund prepares to retire this November. One of the police officers who shot Breonna Taylor has returned his book advance, according to the Wall Street Journal. In the New York Times, author Khaled Hosseini reflects on Afghanistan, his birthplace. And the great horror mangaka Junji Ito discusses his latest book, Sensor, with GQ.

Action-Packed Digital Developments

How will Maryland's new e-book law change the marketplace? The answer remains to be seen. DC Comics is partnering with South Korea's Webtoon on a new slate of superhero webcomics—big news for the growing Korean webcomics market. Our latest School and Library Spotlight highlights a growing slate of STEM- and STEAM-centric biographies for children. Uncorrected, "not-for-sale" advance copies of popular novels by the likes of Sally Rooney and J.K. Rowling have become hot commodities to the dismay of many authors, the Wall Street Journal reports. Pearson has been fined $1 million by the SEC, which says that the educational publisher misled its investors over the extent of a 2018 data breach, according to Computer Weekly. Despite a ban on book advances in the U.S. House of Representatives, Forbes reports that Trump's former doctor-turned-congressman received a sizable advance from Post Hill just before his swearing-in. Bustle considers how the pandemic has upended book tours and what post-pandemic book promotion will look like. And Jack Covert, the founder of Porchlight Book Company, has died at 77.

Consolidation Continues

The corporatization of the American publishing business keeps chugging along: Hachette will acquire Workman, one of the country's largest independently-owned publishers, for $240 million later this year. Bookstores are bouncing back, with skyrocketing sales in June helping to boost sales in the first half of the year by 30% over the same period last year. Employees at Brooklyn's Greenlight Bookstores are unionizing, making the Brooklyn mini-chain's stores the latest of several New York bookstores that have pushed for unions over the past couple of years. Vulture investigates the doings of a mysterious manuscript thief, who has spent the past five years stealing books prior to publication. Forbes reports on new financial disclosures showing that Ted Cruz got a $320,000 advance from Regnery for his 2020 book—and that his campaign spent nearly half that amount buying copies. And the New York Times reports the deaths of financial columnist and thriller author Michael Thomas, poet Janice Mirikitani, and Sudoku puzzle publisher Maki Kaji.

Grudge Match

Publishers and the Internet Archive are once again in conflict as lawyers for four plaintiff houses fight against the IA's attempt to secure sales data to use in its defense against charges of copyright infringement. A slew of new books on the Trump administration hit the shelves this summer, but the question is, how are they selling? Plenty of people are buying conservative books, it seems, and conservative publishers are gearing up to saturate the market with books responding to leftist and anti-racist discourse, according to the New York Times. In China, the AP reports, the market has turned frosty for books from Taiwan as tensions between the two countries rise. The AP also reports that Chelsea Clinton's She Persisted children's book series will get another 11 titles starting next year. And we talked with poet laureate Tracy K. Smith about her forthcoming, career-spanning collection.

Another Down Week

It was a rough week for print book sales again last week, thanks to yet another tough comparison with last year. Penguin Random House and Amanda Gorman are partnering on a poetry award. Clarivate's purchase of ProQuest has been delayed until December due to FTC involvement in the sale. Dolly Parton will pen a debut novel with James Patterson, People reports, as the thriller novelist adds the Leading Lady of Country to a list of celebrity writing partners that includes a certain former president of the United States. HarperCollins will delay Don Winslow's next novel until next year, Deadline reports. And the New Republic unpacks the uncomfortable rise of the Instagram novel.

Of Jousts and Jobs

A chivalric romance in verse from the 14th century gets a boost from publishers as the long-awaited A24 film The Green Knight screens nationwide. It's a big day for job move news in the business, with Penguin Publishing Group realigning its marketing and publicity teams, a new head of Hardie Grant's North American operations, and a new president at Diamond Book Distributors. The New York Times takes a look at how disgraced outgoing New York governor Andrew Cuomo's pandemic memoir has become a financial and ethical headache for PRH. Time examines extortion scams and review bombing at Goodreads. And the award-winning children’s book author and poet Eloise Greenfield has died at 92.

Fighting for Freedom of Speech

Numerous governments around the world have been targeting LGBTQ and dissident groups, curtailing freedom of speech and exercising censorship, but many being attacked are fighting back. A case in point: the government of Belarus just dissolved the local branch of PEN after the organization reported hundreds of human rights abuses, and the international community is rallying to PEN Belarus's aid. In the U.S., lawyers for the Internet Archive are demanding a decade of sales records for all books from a quartet of publishers in their court battle over fair use. Summer isn’t over yet and we’ve got a roundup of August book club picks for late beach reading. Marcel Dekker, publisher of scientific, technical, and medical books and journals, has died, at age 91. Comic book creators are using Substack to connect directly with fans. Finally, in the U.K., after Kate Clanchy's Orwell Prize-winning memoir of life as a teacher was heavily criticized for its “racialized stereotypes,” the publisher, Picador, apologized and confirmed that the book will be rewritten.

Publishers Delay Return to Office as Cases Surge

Print book sales fell 1.7% last week, with a drop in nonfiction sales offsetting a continued increase in adult fiction. HarperCollins had another huge fiscal year, with sales nearing $2 billion. Surging Covid cases due to the Delta variant have delayed many companies' plans to return to the office, with Simon & Schuster parent company ViacomCBS postponing in-person operations until October, Hachette reversing its previous announcement of a September return, and Amazon eyeing a January 2022 reopening. Meanwhile, libraries across the U.S. are working together to boost public confidence in vaccines in an effort to flatten the curve. At Simon & Schuster, Marysue Rucci will head a new eponymous imprint at Scribner after years at S&S's flagship imprint. Colson Whitehead’s Sag Harbor will go to series at HBO Max, according to Deadline, and Glamour reports that Dan Levy will pen a book based on his popular sitcom Schitt's Creek. Eater reports that Nach Waxman, founder of legendary cookbook store Kitchen Arts & Letters, has died at 84. And former Bookseller editor David Whitaker has also died.

How Will the Second Half Go?

Simon & Schuster CEO Jonathan Karp is bullish on the house's prospects for fall after the company posted gains in its second quarter. A good second half of the year is far less certain for live book events: Bouchercon, the annual mystery convention, has called off this year's show as cases of the Delta variant of the coronavirus rise, perhaps indicating a trend going forward. Arcadia has bought Commonwealth Editions, a Massachusetts-based regional imprint, adding more than 300 titles to its list. Korean comics, called manhwa, are slowly but steadily gaining popularity in North America. The Romance Writers of America has rescinded an award for Karen Witemeyer's book At Love's Command following criticism of its portrayal of Native Americans, according to Religion News Service. The Oregonian reports that the Portland Book Festival has announced a hybrid format for 2021, with both online and in-person events. And executives at DC Comics spoke with the Hollywood Reporter about their plan to "future-proof" publishing.
