Their Day in Court
There are three big publishing-related legal updates today: the DoJ's case
against Bolton will move forward, the GSU e-reserves
case is finally over, and a court has ruled that Edward
Snowden's book earnings should go to the U.S. government,
according to Reuters. After weeks buoyed by big books, print sales
dropped off last week—although they still topped the comparable
week last year. At Random House, authors and married couple Nicola and David
Yoon have launched a YA
romance imprint starring heroes of color. Wired reports
that publishers are worried as e-books fly
off libraries' virtual shelves. The BBC reports that Amazon has
reported nearly 20,000
Covid-19 cases among its U.S. workers. And in China, a Christian
bookseller has been
sentenced to seven years in prison amid a disturbing purge of
"illegal" books.
Print Unit Sales Fell 5.5% Last Week
With no new big book hitting shelves last week, unit sales of print books
fell 5.5% compared to the week ended September 19 at outlets that report to
NPD BookScan, but were up 10.3% over the week ended September 28, 2019. more »

Court Rules the DoJ's Case Against Bolton Can Go
Forward
A federal judge this week denied former national security adviser John Bolton’s

Where It Happened' without proper clearance. more »
Publishers Escape Fee Award as GSU E-Reserves Case
Finally Ends
In a 14-page final order in the case, Judge Orinda Evans once again found GSU

judge reversed her earlier decision and opted not to order the plaintiffs to
pay GSU some $3 million in attorney fees. more »

has found that more than
14,000 serious injuries have been incurred at Amazon fulfillment
centers in spite of the company’s safety claims.
