Jacob Holo and David Weber
The Valkyrie Protocol
Sponsored by Baen Books

Bestselling authors David Weber and Jacob Holo have again joined forces to bring sci-fi fans the sequel to their national bestseller The Gordian Protocol. In the action-packed, time-traveling follow-up, The Valkyrie Protocol, Agent Raibert Kaminski and the crew of the Transtemporal Vehicle Kleio must “untangle the past to save the future!”

With time running out, the crew makes an unnerving discovery. A temporal implosion has claimed two whole universes, and the crew is completely mystified as to what caused it. One thing is clear. Reckless time travel was involved. Still, Raibert’s old colleagues back on SysGov plan to travel to the past to alter the timeline. But that’s not the only problem. SysGov’s multiverse neighbor is arming a fleet of time machines and secretly targeting SysGov. Learn more and enter to win a limited number of signed copies here.

Author and freelance journalist Stephanie Yeboah joined Books on Tap Live on September 30 to discuss her eye-opening book chronicling her own painful, personal experiences alongside those of other black, plus-sized women, detailing the little known history of racism and discrimination directed at this marginalized and often overlooked group. Watch the archived interview about her powerful debut, Fattily Ever After: A Black Fat Girl’s Guide to Living Life Unapologetically, here.

Gearing up for a virtual Frankfurt

Earlier this year, Australian publishers, booksellers and industry leaders predicted that 2020 would see a growing demand for uplit and practical titles on climate change, as well as health and personal development titles. This has certainly been borne out in global rights sales and acquisitions over the past six months. As Allen & Unwin rights manager Maggie Thompson gears up for this year’s virtual Frankfurt Book Fair, she reports that ‘books that allow people to live better, less anxious and more fulfilling lives are among my top requests from editors and agents’.

But other trends are also emerging. When Black Inc. rights and contracts coordinator Erin Sandiford nominated the categories that she felt were most in-demand, she listed: ‘Literary translation. Big-picture nonfiction, especially optimistic deep dives into how we can fix the world’s social and environmental problems, and how we can connect with nature. More generally, writing by women and people of colour and writing that explores issues of gender, queerness and race, is starting to get the attention it deserves.’ This attention to marginalised voices is starting to come through in publishers’ lists, particularly in children’s and YA titles, where #ownvoices stories are becoming much more commonplace.

In this issue of Think Australian you can read about the latest Australian rights sales, acquisitions, award-winners and bestsellers, including a round-up of the titles that Australian publishers are most excited to be pitching in the coming months. You can also find an overview of the Australian book market here.

International publishers also have a new way of seeking out Australian stories. The Australian Publishers Association has launched its new Books from Australia website, which features a selection of titles from Australian publishers for rights managers to browse.

Once again, we’ve teamed up with Publishers Weekly and BookBrunch to distribute this issue of Think Australian to over 50,000 subscribers. However, if you’re a Publishers Weekly or BookBrunch subscriber and want to receive more frequent updates on the Australian rights market, please sign up here.

Their Day in Court

There are three big publishing-related legal updates today: the DoJ's case against Bolton will move forward, the GSU e-reserves case is finally over, and a court has ruled that Edward Snowden's book earnings should go to the U.S. government, according to Reuters. After weeks buoyed by big books, print sales dropped off last week—although they still topped the comparable week last year. At Random House, authors and married couple Nicola and David Yoon have launched a YA romance imprint starring heroes of color. Wired reports that publishers are worried as e-books fly off libraries' virtual shelves. The BBC reports that Amazon has reported nearly 20,000 Covid-19 cases among its U.S. workers. And in China, a Christian bookseller has been sentenced to seven years in prison amid a disturbing purge of "illegal" books.
