Cleckheaton Writers Group minutes

Cleckheaton Writers Group (CWG) met on Monday 5 October on Zoom with Sarah, Karen, Mandy and Martijn in attendance, Sam, Gemma and Alice having passed on their apologies.

The minutes from the last meeting were passed as a correct record.

WIP updates: Sarah has been editing Draft 5 of Book 2 and is a third of the way through. She recommended Rachel Heron's approach to editing, post-it notes, as she is using this as she reads through the MS, making a spreadsheet to see which bits need most work. Mandy has not been writing as her publisher has asked her to run a short story course and she has been working on this. Martijn has just returned to the CWG and was warmly welcomed back. He has started a piece inspired by Gemma's writing. Karen has written some new scenes for her WIP, applied for some writing positions, submitted some of her writing and has a Teams call with Emma Layfield of Hachette on Monday 12 October regarding her picture book.

Courses, workshops: The National Creative Writing Industry Day Conference is coming up at a cost of £20 but this includes a 1-2-1 with an agent. Karen shared the new Cleckheaton Library times with members.

Feedback: Karen had shared some of her current WIP. Sarah felt that it flowed well and that she enjoyed it. She suggested some editing changes but said it made her laugh out loud. Martijn and Mandy agreed to pass feedback on to Karen via email (Alice, Gemma and Sam would also do so). Karen gave her feedback on Sarah's and Sarah explained that she has scrapped the work supplied for feedback and re-written this now.

This led to a discussion about the first chapter of a new WIP, including beginnings and killing your darlings.

WIP plans: Martijn plans to continue the story he has started, Sarah to continue editing, Karen to write more on her WIP and Mandy to work on her novella.

As Martijn was returning to the group, members agreed they would send some writing prompts to help (Mandy and Karen) and Sarah suggested the book 642 things to write about.

Sarah asked about writing for children as she has a writing friend who wishes to start writing in this genre. Karen suggested that he join SCBWI, look at the GEA Writing for Children Course and suggested some books on writing for children.

The next meeting will take place on Monday 19 October on Zoom, 5.45pm. Karen has given her apologies and asks members who wish to send work for feedback to do so by the end of Sunday night.
