Kirklees Newsletter 6 October 2020
|
October is Black History Month
in the UK and has been celebrated nationwide every year for nearly 40
years. Each year Kirklees celebrates Black History Month and this year
many of the events on being held virtually, but there is still a wide
choice from exhibitions and poetry to documentaries and webinars.
The next
online Organ Concert
with Borough Organist Gordon Stewart will go live on 12 October from 1pm.
If you missed the first few you can watch and listen on the Lawrence Batley
Theatre’s YouTube channel. This is a great way to see how the organ
works while listening to an array of music from composers including
Handel, Bach, Carter and Mendelssohn.
Are you a
musician or performance artist based and/or working primarily in
Dewsbury/Kirklees? Manasamitra
is offering commissions to local artists, primarily musicians but also
storytellers or other performance artists, to take part in the Dewsbury
‘not-the-fringe’ Festival.
If you
know any young people thinking about a career in the arts, the Young
Producers Programme with Chol Theatre and The Children's
Arts School could set them on the right path. Their
12 week programme offers the chance for them to develop and share their
artistic skills and plan and deliver a programme of arts activity for
other young people as part of the Our Biennale Festival 2021.
Keep in
touch during the week on our social media channells - Facebook and Twitter.

Creative
Kirklees Newsletter 29 September 2020
|
#Heartyourtown
has brought colour and creativity from some of our top Kirklees artists
to Dewsbury and Huddersfield town centres this summer for us all to enjoy
in a socially distanced way. As this fabulous project draws to a close,
you can see some of the highlights here in this short video.
It’s
great to see that Hoot
from Home has been extended until March 2021. These online sessions
are completely free for people who are aged 18+, residents in Kirklees
& looking to protect and/or maintain their mental health and
wellbeing. Activities include music, visual arts, digital music, creative
writing and singing.
Unfortunately
there was a glitch with technology yesterday and the first online organ
concert did not stream live as planned – we are happy to say the problem
has been rectified and you can now watch this lovely
concert from Gordon Stewart in Huddersfield Town Hall at anytime - at
a time to suit you!
Elsewhere
some great activities are coming up on Creative
Kirklees. Globe
Arts Studio in Slaithwaite have a fabulous variety of workshops
and classes and there are some great
exhibitions to see both live and online.

Creative
Kirklees Newsletter 22 September 2020
|
It’s
great to see so many creative organisations appearing back on Creative
Kirklees, adding a range of new events both on line and actually taking place
with covid-19 safety measures in place. Events include a number of interesting exhibitions
well worth a visit – though with restrictions changing all the time it is
always best to check with the venue before visiting.
As
mentioned in an earlier newsletter, Kirklees Council want to appoint
an artist to develop work
in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, to explore the impact and the
Kirklees response to this. The closing date for
applications is 30 September so there is still time to apply - Please do
share this opportunity with anyone you think might be interested
After
the introduction to the online series
of Organ Concerts a couple of weeks ago, we are excited for next Monday
(28 September) when Gordon Stewart begins the series of 6
concerts with a typical Town Hall programme – the performance will be
streamed live at 1pm and will then be available to watch later at any
time!
Lastly
just to say we are delighted to hear that the Online Holmfirth Arts
Festival, which streamed over the weekend, proved to be an overwhelming success
with more than 1,500 viewers from as far away as Australia and South
Africa which is tremendous. Great news!
