All the Reads You'll Need This Spring
Our final adult announcements issue of 2019 has landed, previewing 850
books publishing in spring 2020 that our editors think you should
keep your eyes on. At Penguin Random House, Paul Bogaards has been named deputy
publisher of Knopf and Pantheon, where he'll oversee marketing for
both imprints. And the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses has inked a
long-awaited deal with Submittable that will provide discounted
pricing for CLMP members. In Bosnia, author John Erik Riley investigates
Nobel Prize winner Peter Handke's
position on the Bosnian genocide for Lit Hub as Handke and
fellow Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk accept their prizes in Sweden. And Mel
magazine lays out how Blood Meridian, perhaps the most gruesome
Western ever written, became a
legendarily unfilmable book in Hollywood despite much attention
and many failed attempts.
Adult Books for Spring 2020
As we turn the page and start thinking of spring, our editors have chosen 850 books for adults publishing between February and July that you’re going to want to put on your radar. more »

A Chaotic Week for Bookstores
Independent bookstores across the country are suffering from
shipping delays, a situation that booksellers say is impacting
holiday sales. In New York, the staff of indie bookstore chain McNally
Jackson is preparing to
vote to unionize this week. In Canada, Michelle Obama's Becoming
was again the top-selling
book of the year, with Margaret Atwood also pulling in good
numbers for The Testaments. And the end-of-year trend pieces are in:
the BBC examines how reading
has changed in the 2010s, while Deutsche Welle explains how the Nobel
Prize affects book sales globally. Literary Hub has
crunched a wide array of year's end books lists and unveiled the ultimate
best books of 2019 list. In the U.K., Neil Gaiman tells the Guardian
how he wrote a poem for refugees compiled from
1,000 tweets. And De'Shawn Charles Winslow won the Center
for Fiction's First Novel Prize last night, while Lynn Nesbit
received a lifetime achievement award, at the Center's annual gala.

A Painful End to a Publishing Week
As financial reports wrap up for this week, HarperCollins posted a rough
Q1 and LSC Communications didn't have
much luck in its Q3, either. The week was rough over at Bustle,
too, where a number of longtime
staffers were laid off, including its books staff, Variety
reports. At Scholastic, a Wonky Donkey sequel is out in the
world, while at Henry Holt, Andy Cohen becomes the latest
celebrity to get his own
imprint. Autostraddle is investigating the resurgence
of feminist bookstores in the South, while at the New York
Times, the Anonymous Trump book gets a brutal pan.
Earnings, Sales, Drop in Q1 at HarperCollins
Profits dropped 28% at HarperCollins in the first quarter of fiscal 2020 compared to the first period of fiscal 2019, while revenue declined 3%. Parent company New Corp expects HC's financial performance to improve starting in January, the second half of the fiscal year. more »

The Publishing Personnel Carousel
Major job moves hit the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group this
week, where Suzanne Herz replaces Anne
Messitte as publisher of Vintage/Anchor and Todd Doughty is
promoted to deputy publisher of Doubleday. Here at PW, we've got some
big changes too: fiction reviews editor Gabe Habash is taking his collection
of under-the-radar novellas in translation and leaving us for the University
of Michigan, with PW's own David Varno taking over
fiction reviews and Phoebe Cramer going full-time as associate
reviews editor covering genre fiction. Sales were flat at HBG in
Q3, and Indigo saw a significant
sales slide in its Q2. At Macmillan, John Sargent continues to
defend his library e-book embargo as boycotts of
the publisher proliferate. A conservative author wrongly
claimed Barack Obama held "political correctness" meetings
in a new book, the Daily Beast finds. In Turkey, author Ahmet Altan
has been freed after
three years in prison. And the prolific experimental fiction
writer Stephen Dixon has died at 83.
Herz Up, Messitte Out at Knopf Doubleday
Suzanne Herz, executive v-p and executive director of publishing at Doubleday, will replace Anne Messitte as publisher of Vintage/Anchor; Messitte will leave the company in December. Todd Doughty has been promoted to senior v-p and deputy publisher at Doubleday. more »

for 2019

A Warehouse Changes Hands in Reno
A big boost is coming to Penguin Random House's distribution
operation west of the Mississippi thanks to a distribution
center the ever-expanding publisher will take over from Baker
& Taylor in Reno, Nev. At Hachette, a Department of Justice demand to out
the anonymous author of a new book on the Trump administration has been
summarily rejected. Barnes & Noble, attempting to limit the
lawsuit in which it finds itself embroiled, is risking a move
for summary judgment against former CEO Demos Parneros. And Adam
Bellow is bringing his conservative trade publishing bonafides to bear in a joint
venture with Tennessee's Post Hill Press. Meanwhile, in Michigan,
a mother of five faces 93 days in jail for failing to
return two library books, the New York Daily News reports.
And the Library of America will enshrine Joan
Didion's life work in its pages.

Will Midlist Authors Get Their Due?
Is the book business too reliant on bestselling superstars at the expense
of other authors? We investigate in our latest issue. At
Algonquin, Elisabeth Scharlatt is retiring in
December after 30 years, with Betsy Gleick taking over as
publisher. In the U.A.E. last week, Sharjah hosted its latest
book fair, while in Shanghai, the children's book fair is slated to
return in two weeks. Meanwhile, politics are back in books news,
with the New York Times reporting criticism over the decision by the
author of a new book on Trump's White House to stay
anonymous and the New Yorker providing a glimpse of what it's like
to edit Donald Trump penned by the editor of The Art of the
Deal, Peter Osnos. Mother Jones has taken a look at the lasting
importance of Oprah's book club on African-American readers. And
Bill Gates has named two books he
wants prospective employees to read.
Is Publishing Too Top-Heavy?
As megabestsellers command more of publishers’ marketing budgets and retailers’ shelf space, breaking out the next crop of hit makers has become a challenge. more »
