The Weekend Edition

Dear,

Let me tell you about some of my new favorite BookBaby authors who are using their writing talents to make a difference in their communities.
  • Melissa Ford Thornton is a storyteller, poet, music publicist, and lyricist. Her first nonfiction book, An Elegant Dispute of the Accidental, is a collection of poetry and prose focused on enduring family relationships. Thornton donates a substantial amount of her book profits to the National Children’s Advocacy Center, which works to prevent child sexual abuse and support abuse victims.
  • Canadian author Trysh Ashby-Rolls writes and lectures on challenging social issues. In the second edition of her memoir, Triumph, Ashby-Rolls offers guidance and reassurance for survivors on their personal journeys. A percentage of profits from her book supports the Ending Violence Association in Vancouver, British Columbia.
  • Not everyone is up to walking a mile—or 550 of them—in author Blaine Rada’s shoes. His book, From Sore Soles to a Soaring Soul, chronicles his walk across the network of ancient pilgrim routes in Spain known as the Camino de Santiago. Proceeds from his book go to charities that support the Camino, including American Pilgrims on the Camino.
  • When Chuck Miller’s daughter, Ruby, passed away at age six, he decided to write a children’s book in her memory. Will Little Roo Ever…? is based on Ruby’s challenging short life, striving to overcome childhood developmental delays. Miller is donating future profits from the book to The Arc, a national organization that advocates for human rights for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. (You’ll learn more about Chuck’s story, including a very successful Kickstarter campaign that funded his book, in an upcoming BookBaby Blog post.)
In a few weeks, I’ll tell you about more BookBaby authors whose personal publishing journeys led them to contribute to their favorite causes. If you’re up for a literary adventure of another kind, Atlas Obscura takes us on a tour of Cecil Court in London, a 17th-century alley lined with secondhand bookstores and antiquarian shops.
All the best,

The Weekend Edition

I'll get right to the point,

If you're thinking of selling your book on Amazon—something every self-published author must do—then I have something you need to read.

We launched our free guide, "How To Publish On Amazon," just a few months ago, and the response has been extraordinary. In fact, some BookBaby authors have told us that reading this guide might have been the most important 15 minutes of their self-publishing journey thus far.

So, I'm going to keep this weekend message short to give you time to download and read this guide right now. It's a quick read. Who knows…you'll probably still be working on that cup of coffee or tea by the time you finish it.

What I do know is this: It's helping hundreds of aspiring authors decide on their publishing path, and it can help you too.

The Weekend Edition

We’ve seen it all,

Since 2011, BookBaby has helped authors self-publish books of every variety under the sun. From self-help books to poetry, romance novels to divorce handbooks, business books to bedtime stories, our authors have published works in all the genres and niches you can think of—and plenty more that you didn’t know existed. (Christmas Feng Shui, anyone?)

Yet, there’s one thing that unifies this diverse library: Every self-published author needs an author website to succeed in today’s competitive marketplace. Having a personal home base on the web has gone from a luxury to a necessity of doing business. A great website has the potential to tell the story of you and your books and can attract thousands of prospective readers and build expectation and excitement for your work.

I’ve seen thousands of author websites over the years, and there’s one unifying truth I can share: Creating a great author website is less about how it looks and more about what it has to say, who it is speaking to, and how often it can delight the reader. In fact, that’s some of the advice I shared with authors in my BookBaby blog post, “Your Author Website Must Have…” along with showcasing some of the best—and most effective—author websites I’ve come across.

Launching a book without a website is a scary prospect, indeed. Which reminds me: Halloween is almost here, so it’s time to share some not-very-spooky-yet-interesting writing quotes from Mary Shelley, author of the classic novel, Frankenstein.

The Weekend Edition

Good morning,

A few months ago, while packing for a move to my new home, I discovered buried treasure. Actually, it wasn’t buried—I found some of my favorite old paperbacks perched out of sight on high, remote bookshelves. Now, more prominently shelved, I picked one up last weekend—Casino Royale, the first of 11 James Bond novels written by British author Ian Fleming—for some much-needed escapist reading.

And what a delightful escape it was. Besides his wonderful plotlines and unforgettable characters, Fleming was masterful at describing story setting in exquisite detail. Midway through the book, I could close my eyes and imagine myself sitting at the baccarat tables in the Royale-les-Eaux casino as Bond outduels the evil LeChiffre. I could practically hear the murmurs of the elegantly dressed spectators watching the high-stakes action, the clack of the betting tiles slapping the table, and the shake-shake-shake of the legendary cocktail dispenser mixing 007’s favorite drink. Fleming later said of his work, “…while thrillers may not be Literature with a capital L, it is possible to write what I can best describe as ‘thrillers designed to be read as literature.’” He used well-known brand names and everyday details to produce a sense of realism and atmosphere to his spy capers.

The setting is critical to a great story. Could you imagine the suave British MI-6 agent playing Texas Hold-Em poker near the all-you-can-eat buffet at the Peppermill Casino in Reno, Nevada? It goes beyond the basic “who-what-where” of the story and allows your readers to visualize the action. As long-time BookBaby Blog contributor Nancy Erickson points out in “The Importance of Setting In Your Story,” settings can be integral to the story itself. “Could The Scarlet Letter have been set anywhere but Puritan New England?” she asks. “The Grapes of Wrath anywhere but the Dust Bowl era of California?”

And here’s one more discovery about settings: My friend Nate Hoffelder of The Digital Reader uncovered an interesting website called Hometown Reads. Visitors can find local authors who’ve listed their bios, bibliographies, and other details. It’s a great resource for indie bookstores looking to host book signings, schools looking for speakers, and readers looking to support local authors. There are thousands of authors already listed across the US, and not just in the metro areas—I found 14 authors from my little hometown of Ashland, Oregon. Check it out and see what your neighbors are writing!
All the best,
Steven Spatz
