The Problem with Adaptations

Why Your Protagonist Needs Willpower
A protagonist's willpower must be powerful enough to sustain desire through conflict and ultimately take actions that create meaningful and irreversible change. What's more, your protagonist must have at least one chance to attain their desire.
An audience has no patience for a protagonist
who lacks all possibility of realizing their desire.
The reason is simple: no one believes this of their own life. We all carry hope in our hearts, no matter the odds against us.
A protagonist who's literally hopeless, who doesn't possess the will or capacity to achieve their desire, is a regrettably common mistake. A story cannot be told about a character who doesn't want anything.
A protagonist is a willful character. Other characters may be dogged, even inflexible, but your protagonist in particular must be a willful being.

Learn the Secrets of Character Creation
at a McKee Seminar Next Spring.

"Robert McKee's techniques of deconstructing genre offer an invaluable insight into how to construct and break a multi-layered television show, and leave viewers with characters they won't easily forget."
Mateja Bozicevic, Staff Writer/Creative Producer at EO Visions

Clarifying the Object of Desire

A protagonist may want something and not know it, or may want something and be completely aware of it. Things are different for the writer. Robert McKee teaches the importance of knowing your character's Object of Desire, with reference to ROCKY.

The Problem with Adaptations

Why Story Craft is Essential
Given the choice between trivial material brilliantly told versus profound material badly told, an audience will always choose the former. Master storytellers know how to squeeze life out of the least of things, while poor storytellers reduce the profound to the banal.
If you cannot tell story, insightful ideas turn dry as chalk.
Story talent is primary, literary talent is secondary but essential. This principle is absolute in film, television, stage and page. Your task is to use your story talent, and wring from it all possible creativity. Only by using everything you know about the craft of storytelling can you make your talent forge story.
Talent without craft is like fuel without an engine. It burns wildly, but accomplishes nothing.

Master your craft at a McKee STORY Seminar next spring.

"My understanding of Story is deeper than I would have imagined after taking this class. I can't wait to use what Mr. McKee taught me!"
Andrea Verde, Freelance Writer

The Problem with Adaptations

What Makes a Story Well-Told?
Whether you write for stage, page or screen, there are three key traits that your story must possess in order to be well-told.
Firstly, you must ask yourself if your story holds audience's interest. Is it compelling? Is it, as we say, a page turner? When you pitch your story, if your audience loses interest or empathy, if they don't really care how it turns out, this is the first sign that it's a weak piece of storytelling.
Secondly, your story must satisfy. A story should compel interest from beginning to end, then satisfy your audience with an ending of such revelation and power as to make the trip to the theatre or cinema, or the time they invested in watching or reading, completely worthwhile.
Lastly, your writing must possess transparency. As the audience observes what's said and done by your characters, they should feel they're actually seeing through the surface to your real thoughts, feelings and motivations. Writing of quality should lead you to insight into what's really behind character behavior, without a word of explanation.
Interest, satisfaction, and transparency are the three hallmarks of superior storytelling.

Learn the secrets of masterful storytelling at McKee's London STORY Seminar.

"Robert McKee is truly a master, not only of the art of story, but the art of teaching it as well. One of the most rewarding and informative weekends of my life, and worth every penny."
R. Robertson, Animation Filmmaker
