Wings with live score

As the world prepares to mark the centenary of the end of WW1, the Kirklees Concert Season presents a landmark screening of the romantic action silent movie Wings with Carl Davis’ score performed live by the Orchestra of Opera North.
Find out about the film and book your tickets below.

The film...

wings poster
A romantic triangle, a bitter rivalry and unrequited love — an aviation epic set in a sleepy town in America. Rivals Jack and David both vie for the affections of Sylvia Lewis. When the boys are called to enlist at the outbreak of War, the duo are forced to put aside petty arguments and unite, forming an unexpected unbreakable brotherly-bond in the process.
When a catastrophic event shakes their friendship to the core, the brutally of war has heart-breaking consequences.

(Please note on the evening the orchestra will perform Carl Davis’ 1993 score)

Did you know...

wings clara
  • Wings stars Hollywood’s original ‘It’ girl, Clara Bow
  • Director William A. Wellman was selected to direct the film due to his WW1 pilot combat experience
  • Over 300 pilots and the US Government were involved in making this film
  • Wings was one of the biggest films Hollywood had ever seen and won the first ever Academy Award for Best Picture in 1929
  • Charles “Buddy” Rodgers (Jack Powell) had to take flying lessons as a lot of the close-up shots were filmed while the actors were actually flying! – watch a clip of the daring stunts here.

The music...

Carl Davis’ symphonic score animates superbly the excitement of the film: the drama of battle, the blossoming romance and the break-taking flying scenes. For this commemorative screening, conductor Carl Davis will conduct his own score.
