Short Story Review
Life
isn’t exactly easy; there are decisions to make, heartbreak,
death, and every conceivable action. Dominga is an EMT who
seems to care too much about things. She wants to save every life she can, on
or off the job, no matter the risk.
Her friend Nico,
on the other hand, can’t seem to get anything to go his way. He seems
to want out of life, not suicide, more like never having existed in the first
place. When Dominga gains the power to do just that, she still feels as if
she must help her friend rather than become an indifferent cosmic entity.

It’s
not often these days that we see a rapper come out of Staten Island, but the
list of rappers who have are some of the greatest of all time (Method Man,
RZA, Ghostface Killa, etc…).
Lou the Human may
not be aiming to join those ranks just yet, but he certainly has the skills
to. More of a rapper’s rapper, Lou’s athletic flows and lyrics on just
wanting to have the freedom to go wild create a personality different from
other rising rappers.

Art To See
The
Korean Cultural Center of NY sent out a call for South Korean artists living
in New York earlier in the year, selecting 22 award-winning artists for this
show. Centered around the South Korean post-modernist movement that occurred
after the 1990 Olympic Games in Seoul, the exhibition is heavily involved in
politics, high modernism, and the avant-garde.
Focusing on South
Korean culture, the influence of living in New York shines through each
artist’s work, forming what could be a new direction in South Korean art.

Fashion Favorite
With
its playfully sexy clothes, incredibly diverse casting and unique details
continuously keeping the label captivating to its clients, Eckhaus Latta has
shown why it deserves to be at the forefront. Created in 2011 by Mike Eckhaus
and Zoe Latta, the brand initially was an artsy cult-favorite brand. 2018 was
a big year for Eckhaus Latta: opening a show at the Whitney Museum,
previously opening exhibits at the Hammer Museum and MoMA PS1, and being
nominated for the LVHM prize.
After meeting each
other at the Rhode Island School of Design, the duo’s line quickly became an
underground favorite of the New York fashion community, known for
deconstructed knitwear, vintage denim, and leaving the clothing unclassified
by gender. Their most recent Spring 2019 collection was an age and
race-diverse mix of models, artists, and cultural powerhouses. Playfulness
was incredibly evident in their clothing line as the soundtrack to the
collection was made by young schoolchildren banging on cymbals and yelling.

People We Celebrate
There’s
something inspiring when it comes to making a change. Maybe we could all use
Mary Mattingly as a spark to that!
Mattingly, a
visual artist, took action when she found out that the South Bronx was the
largest food desert in the U.S., Swale
is a public food garden on the water that provides free produce and herbs to
all people.
She has provided
numerous families with fresh fruits and vegetables that they could harvest at
Swale. Also a visual artist, Swale is just one of her projects.

Hello
New Yorkers,
Welcome back to
our exciting and multi-faceted newsletter, The Stoop. This week brings us
closer to the end
of October, which means it is the best time to schedule some seasonal
activities. 👀🍁🙌
Biergarten Pretzels are an unbeatable bar snack and crowd-pleasing addition to game nights, beer tastings or a snack menu for any gathering. This authentic recipe for the large, fluffy and filling pretzels you'd find in German biergartens all over New York, cut out the confusion of making them at home! 🍻🥨😍
For those with an
interest in music, fashion, wine, and pop-ups, Dave East fans with a taste
for French vineyards are welcomed to visit a new pop-up, located at rapper
Fat Joe’s Up NYC storefront. They’ll be offering visitors rare access to the Luc
Belaire wines and brand-new clothing line. 🍷😍📸
A new MTA proposal
from Scott Stringer, titled, “Expanding
Access In One Swipe,” is painting a much better picture for commuters.
Some highlights of the proposal are the reduction of a flat ticket rate to
$2.75, on the LIRR and commuter railroads as well as enforcing a free
transfer to subways and buses. 🚄📰👀
Deadly hair and a
vicious reputation have always been two strong points of the mythological
figure, Medusa. Through time, she’s been the focus of paintings and
sculptures for both her theorized beauty and horrific disfigurement. At the
Met, visitors can experience many depictions of the character through the
eyes of many artists.🎨👀🕵
Sci-fi gets juiced
up on conspiracy theories in this short story all about artificial
intelligence gone rogue. On a military base set in the world of,
“AI and The Trolley Problem,” by Pat Cadigan, the disappearance of
soldiers and the presence of technology make for an action-packed tale. 📚🤔🚨

Gus
Dapperton has a style that only he can pull off. A crazy bowl cut,
turtlenecks, and bright glasses pull this kids style together. At just 20
years old, Dapperton’s music emphasizes music from just before his time.
Mixing pop vibes
that we’ve gotten used to, he throws in a bit of Mac DeMarco-esque cool tones
and can easily throw all that over some funky 90’s bass lines. Interested
yet? Dapperton’s music is probably everything you’ve been looking for in an
artist.

Dangerous Beauty
Medusa
is a mythological figure recognized by many through depictions in movies,
television and stories passed down. The exhibition at Met explores the shift
in the classical art of Medusa from a hideous creature to a beautiful
feminine figure.
Comprised of a
collection of over sixty works, the idealization of the human form comes to
light through the representations of many mythological creatures. Medusa is a
figure that is recognized easily in the art, whether it be her as a woman or
her as a monster, her snake hair and piercing eyes make her presence felt
through each piece.

AI
is transforming our lives more and more every day. Helping us with simple
tasks like checking the weather, but on a larger scale monitoring the world
economy, corporate scale farming and countless other integral aspects of
human society. Can AI become a threat to humans? On a British air base, an AI
security system guards the base, keeping the officers inside safe from
outside threats and the like.
But when a group
of the soldiers is mysteriously killed, who is to blame? The AI system should
have been protecting them, causing some mistrust against the computer.
