Returning for its 30th anniversary from 24 to 28 September at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, Widescreen Weekend is a unique festival celebration of large-screen formats and cinema technologies. Find out about 99 years of Abbey House Museum's history ahead of our centenary celebrations in 2027. This talk from Community Curator Pat Bourne will include historic photographs and a chance to share your own memories of the museum.
There are two special tours to choose from at Leeds Industrial Museum: learn about wildlife in the museum grounds and how plants have been used for textile dyeing, or take a tour of our recreated 'cottage' rooms, and explore the historical domestic and professional roles of women in the home.
In this special open day, in-character visual artist Jude Kershaw will give insight into life as an early 20th century female botanist. Take a look at herbarium sheets from the museum collection, and have a go at botany-themed arts and crafts.
Enjoy free entry to Home Farm in these special open days. Come along to learn about the heritage of our working farm, including the buildings, farm machinery and of course, our rare-breed animals!

Children taking part can earn their certificate and medal by completing their six reading goals. Whether you've already finished or still have a few books left to read, we'd love to see you at your local library before the challenge closes.
We've been delighted to see so many children reading, creating and having fun in libraries across the district this summer. From discovering new stories to taking part in activities and events, it's been fantastic to watch young readers build their confidence and enjoy the joy of reading.

Flavours of Sri Lanka and the Philippines at Shipley Market
The latest businesses to take up residence at Shipley Market, adding even more international flavours, are Savoury Ceylon and Marilou Armada.
Savoury Ceylon is a family-run business operated by a husband-and-wife team originally from Sri Lanka. The already established private dining and catering business is now expanding to bring its authentic Sri Lankan street food to Shipley Market every Friday and Saturday from 9am to 4pm.
Meanwhile, Marilou Armada will be serving customers every Saturday from 9am to 4pm, offering an authentic selection of Filipino specialities including freshly baked traditional sweet and savoury breads alongside tasty noodle dishes.

The brainchild of composer Pierre Sauvageot, Harmonic Fields has previously been presented in Copenhagen, Marseille and Helsinki, and now comes to the West Yorkshire moorlands for the very first time.
An array of woodwind, string and percussive ensembles; vibrating drums, windmill xylophones, harmonic cellos, bamboo flutes, propeller sirens, gyrating musical boxes – will be played by both the elements and ‘wind farmer’ characters.

MAKE: Brown Butter Madeleines
If you’re re-entering your baking era this autumn, we’ve got an easy recipe to whizz up this weekend. Dean Parker, head chef and co-owner of Celentano's in Glasgow, has shared a recipe for brown butter madeleines, made with just six ingredients.
Ingredients:
250g butter
30g miso
90g egg whites
190g brown sugar
120g rice flour
20g almond flour
Small handful of basil, chopped flaky sea salt and cracked black pepper
Method:
Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook, swirling the pan occasionally, until it foams and turns golden brown, giving off a nutty aroma. Stir in the miso, then remove from the heat and leave to cool.
Whisk the sugar and egg till the mixture forms stiff peaks.
Slowly add the butter into the egg mix to emulsify, taking care not to split it.
Add in the dry ingredients and combine.
To bake, line the mould with baking spray and fill the moulds until flush with the mix.
Bake at 180 degrees for 8 minutes.

More than 100 artists will be returning to Coal Drops Yard this Saturday for the 2026 edition of the Art Car Boot Fair. As the name suggests, visitors can expect a blend of art fair and car boot sale, with the opportunity to shop artworks from both famous names and up-and-coming artists. While a prime event for avid collectors, it’s also one of the most accessible art fairs in London – tasking artists with creating exclusive pieces for just £100 each. So, who’s on the bill this year? August brought a wonderful sense of summer to Glen Tanar, with long days, rich green landscapes and the estate at its most vibrant. This past month, we also found ourselves looking to the skies for a very special celestial event. Although the eclipse was unfortunately hidden behind cloud here at Glen Tanar, the wonders of technology meant that we could still witness something truly incredible, even if the images were captured through a lens in another part of the world.
As the season progresses, there is plenty to enjoy, from time spent on the river and in the hills to the abundance of wildlife making the most of the long Highland days. In this month’s newsletter, we’re sharing some of the latest news and highlights from across the estate, as well as looking ahead to the changing season and opportunities still to come.

We’re delighted to have recently added two new electric estate vans to our fleet, which will be used by our Works, Events and Housekeeping teams as we continue to look for ways to reduce our environmental impact. Glen Tanar currently holds a Silver Green Tourism Award, recognising our ongoing commitment to sustainable practices across the estate. We also have a biomass district heating system, powered by sustainably sourced wood chips from the estate, which provides renewable heating and hot water to estate buildings, tenants and holiday guests. By using local resources responsibly and keeping energy production within the estate, we’re reducing carbon emissions, supporting the circular economy and continuing to make positive steps towards a more sustainable future at Glen Tanar.
Commissioned in 2015 and inspired by the landscape of Glen Tanar, this distinctive tweed was designed by Scottish tweed designer Araminta Campbell to camouflage estate workers as they moved through woodland and open ground. Drawing on the soft greys, muted browns and blues of the glen, the cloth combines practicality and heritage with a distinctly contemporary feel. Remarkably, an original Glen Tanar tweed dating from the 1940s was discovered in the estate archive shortly after the new design was completed - with an uncanny resemblance between the two. Today, the Glen Tanar Tweed continues to be worn by estate ghillies and gamekeepers, while a selection of beautifully crafted pieces, including ties and clutch bags, is available to purchase. It’s been a challenging spell on the river, with prolonged high temperatures and a lack of rainfall making conditions difficult, but we’re delighted to report that one of our lovely guests, N Craigs, has been on a real roll this past week on our Deecastle Beat, catching a fantastic 7lb salmon and following it up the very next day with a 3lb grilse. There’s still time to get out on the river before the season ends on 30th September, with fishing available across our Deecastle and Waterside & Ferrar beats. There’s a definite shift in the air — the days are changing, the light is softening, and in just a few weeks we’ll be welcoming the arrival of autumn. This September, Glen Tanar is delighted to host a cosy wreath-making workshop by FIOR, offering the perfect opportunity to embrace the changing season and get creative in the beautiful surroundings of the Estate. You’ll learn the techniques behind decorating a hand-woven willow wreath, crafted by Deeside Willow using their own locally grown willow. These beautiful, natural wreaths provide the perfect base for creating your own dried autumn wreath, using an array of natural dried stems to capture the rich colours and textures of nature’s autumnal palette. Create a unique arrangement to display on your door, while enjoying the beauty and inspiration of Glen Tanar Estate. It’s a wonderful opportunity to slow down, slow the pace and celebrate the changing season with FIOR. All materials and light refreshments will be provided.

August has been a busy month on the estate, with a real mix of conservation work, community activities and opportunities to get people out enjoying the landscape.
Earlier in the month, Ranger Jane was joined by the JMT Volunteers and Sam Jones from Plantlife Scotland to carry out the Year 3 checks on our Twinflower translocation plots. Twinflower is a small, delicate woodland plant that we are working to establish in suitable areas of the estate. Despite the dry conditions over the last two summers, most of the plots are showing good growth, with a number of flower stems spotted too. It’s very encouraging to see the plants settling in and the project continuing to make positive progress.
Our Friday health walks have also continued to go from strength to strength. Numbers have improved considerably since Mike Martin kindly offered the use of his school bus on Friday mornings, with permission from Jayne Brown at Allan & Black. To celebrate the end of the summer holidays, the group finished one of the walks with a picnic, joined by Mike Woolvin, CNPA Health Walk Coordinator, and Mike Ramsay, CNPA Seasonal Ranger. There was a fantastic spread, and it was a lovely way to enjoy the sunshine and round off the summer together.
And finally, August gave us the opportunity to bring people together for something a little out of the ordinary – a partial solar eclipse. Around 70 hopeful visitors came along to our eclipse event, all keeping their fingers crossed for a break in the cloud. Sadly, the weather had other ideas! Although we didn’t get the view we had hoped for, it did become noticeably darker, and the atmosphere was still great. The feedback afterwards was really positive, with many people saying how much they enjoyed simply being outside, sharing the experience and meeting other like-minded people.
It’s been a great reminder that there are lots of different ways to enjoy and connect with the estate, whether that’s through conservation work, a weekly walk or simply coming along to see what’s happening.

September is shaping up to be an exciting month for culture, creativity and community across Kirklees.
Heritage Open Days returns from 11-20 September with more than 90 free events/open sites across the region. It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore hidden gems, uncover fascinating local stories and celebrate this year's theme, Everyday Histories and Working Lives.
Food lovers can look forward to the much-loved Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival on 12-13 September, bringing together delicious local produce, street food, live music and family entertainment. Later in the month, from 21-27 September, celebrations will mark the opening of the new Library Hub and public square at Our Cultural Heart, with a week of activities, workshops, performances and events for all ages.
There's also a change coming up for the Kirklees music community, when the Music in Kirklees website will close and become part of Creative Kirklees from 26 September, creating a more connected home for music news, events, opportunities and local stories.

Please be advised that the Naval Park ships will be CLOSED on Friday, September 11.
For the fourth year in a row, the Buffalo Naval Park will host a 9/11 Day of Service with volunteers from National Grid, Highmark Inc., M&T Bank, HARCAT Welding, and more. This is the largest day of volunteerism at the Buffalo Naval Park, and the projects they will work on through the day include welding, carpentry work, removing rust, running electrical wire, and painting the historic vessels.
We are so grateful for their support and look forward to seeing all of the work they accomplish at the Naval Park.
The Buffalo Naval Park will host a 9/11 ceremony outdoors near the Vietnam Memorial at 11:00 AM that is free and open to the public. The gift shop will remain open from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
After the 9/11 Ceremony, the Cotter Fireboat will be docking near the Vietnam Memorial to offer ticketed tours of the boat until 5:30pm, with proceeds benefiting the Fireboat and the Buffalo Naval Park.
The Buffalo Naval Park is open 7 days a week from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

In The Weston Studio, our Young SixSix company are right in the middle of their production of Macbeth - a new take on the classic play. Read all about them and their work in our article.
